Sarah Marie Sponcil [3] (born August 16, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona) [1] is an American volleyball player for the Grand Rapids Rise of the Pro Volleyball Federation, [4] best known for her beach volleyball career. Sarah competed for the USA Volleyball Beach National Team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Sarah and partner Kelly Claes tied for 9th in their debut Olympics. At 24 and 25, Sponcil and Claes, respectively, were the youngest beach volleyball team to represent the USA since its inception as an Olympic sport in 1996.
Sponcil grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where she began playing indoor volleyball at age 6 and beach volleyball at 8. [1] She led Veritas Preparatory Academy's indoor volleyball team to three state championship titles, winning Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year honors in both 2012 and 2013. [5]
Playing for Team USA at the Four Nations U21 Tournament in Australia, Sarah and her partner Torrey Van Winden went 4–0 against Team Brazil to win Gold. In the same year, the duo finished fourth at the 2016 FIVB U21 World Championships, delivering the highest placement at the event for USA Volleyball.
Sponcil played three seasons of indoor volleyball at Loyola Marymount, where she was the 2016 West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the school's Female Athlete of the Year. She transferred to UCLA for her senior season, where she played both indoor and beach. She led the Bruins to their first-ever NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in May 2018 and then again in 2019. Sponcil was a two-sport Division I Student-Athlete; she played two years of beach and three years of indoor volleyball at Loyola Marymount University where she was 2016 West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and LMU's Female Athlete of the Year. In just three seasons at LMU, Sponcil ranks in LMU history as seventh all-time for attacks (3,063) and ninth all-time for kills (1,193) and kills per set (3.43 per set); she also had 963 digs (2.77 per set) and 76 service aces. With numerous All-American, All-Region, All-WCC, All-Freshman and All-AVCA honors, Sponcil guided the LMU Lions to the 2014 NCAA Tournament and to the 2015 NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Sponcil took a red-shirt year from LMU Beach in 2016 to represent USA Volleyball at the Four Nations U21 Tournament in Sydney, Australia, where she won Gold.
Sponcil transferred to UCLA in 2017, where she played her last season of indoor eligibility in 2017. She also played beach volleyball, and as a Junior in 2018 and Senior in 2019, she helped propel the Bruins to their first Beach National Title in 2018 and then again in 2019. Sarah garnered numerous honors at UCLA, including First Team Pac-12, Court Two Team of the Year with Lily Justine, and AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball All-American.
Sponcil joined the AVP in 2018, partnering with former USC Trojan Kelly Cheng. Sponcil and Cheng quickly rose through the ranks, winning two consecutive FIVB World Tour titles in early 2021 and qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. [2]
Sponcil has partnered successfully with a handful of players in off-season play and on the AVP and FIVB Tours. In the run-up to the Tokyo Games, Sarah partnered with Cheng and the duo had notable wins and honors:
2021: The duo took Gold at Ostrava and Gold at Sochi, finishing 2021 ranked 5th the world in nine games on the FIVB International Tour; they also ended the year 5th in the US on the AVP Tour, with wins at second, third and seventh. Their qualifying wins at Sochi and then Ostrava, where Sarah and Kelly defeated longtime Olympic champions Kerri Walsh and Brooke Sweat, clinched them the number two spot for Team USA for the Tokyo Games.
2020: Sponcil and Cheng played twice on the abbreviated 2020 FIVB tour, placing fifth and ninth, ending the year ranking 14th in the world; they delivered second, third and fifth placements in the abbreviated 2020 AVP Tour, where Sponcil tied fifth for digs, with 6.7 per set. Of note, four of their five losses on the year were to teams seeded first or second.
2019: Fresh out of UCLA in 2019, Sarah made her mark as one of the best defenders on the AVP and FIVB Tours. Sponcil and Cheng played in 14 FIVB Tournaments, winning Silver at The Hague and Silver at Espinho, Portugal, finishing the year with an overall FIVB rank of 14th. In the 2019 AVP season, Sarah and Cheng finished 17th overall; in four AVP events, they advanced to the semi-finals four times and to the championship match once, with Sarah delivering an average of 4.98 digs per set on the season. Six of their eight AVP losses were to teams seeded first or second.
In 2022, Sarah partnered with Terese Cannon for the AVP and FIVB Tours.
For 2024, Sarah will play for the Grand Rapids Rise of the Pro Volleyball Federation in their inaugural 2024 season. [4]
Misty Elizabeth May-Treanor is an American retired professional beach volleyball player. She is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, and as of August 2012, was the most successful female beach volleyball player having won 112 tournaments in domestic and international competition.
Charles Frederick "Karch" Kiraly is an American volleyball player, coach, and broadcast announcer. He was a central part of the U.S National Team that won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. He went on to win the gold medal again at the 1996 Olympic Games, the first Olympic competition to feature beach volleyball. He is the only player to have won Olympic medals of any color in both the indoor and beach volleyball categories. He played college volleyball for the UCLA Bruins, where his teams won three national championships under head coach Al Scates. Kiraly is widely regarded as the greatest male volleyball player of all time.
Elaine Youngs is an American former professional volleyball player who competed both indoors and on the beach.
Rachel Scott is a model and former American professional beach volleyball player who won eight beach volleyball championships with three partners. Scott was named Best Defensive Player 2005 and Most Improved Player on the AVP Tour in 2005. By 2009, she had played in 168 beach volleyball events, 121 domestically and 47 internationally, and earned eight victories, 22 runner-up performances, and won over $750,000 in prize money.
Todd Jonathan Rogers is an American professional beach volleyball player who is an Olympic and FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship gold medalist. He and his former partner, Phil Dalhausser, were the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 AVP Tour champions.
Stein Metzger is a former beach volleyball player from the United States. He is the head coach of the beach volleyball team at the University of Texas.
William Reid Priddy, known as Reid Priddy, is an American volleyball player on the United States men's national volleyball team and Italian club Cucine Lube Civitanova. He has also played on the AVP tour from 2000 to 2006.
Ricci Judson Luyties is an American volleyball coach and former volleyball player. As a member of the United States national volleyball team, he won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Luyties later became a successful professional beach volleyball player and won seven titles. He was the head women's volleyball coach at the University of California, San Diego.
April Elizabeth Ross is an American beach volleyball player and three-time Olympic medalist. She won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics with Jennifer Kessy, a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics with Kerri Walsh Jennings, and a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics with Alix Klineman. Ross and Kessy were also the 2009 Beach Volleyball World Champions.
Tri Bourne is a professional American beach volleyball player. He was formerly a professional indoor player and NCAA Division 1 Men's Volleyball player for the USC Trojans. He has been a part of the United States indoor and beach national teams since 2005. He was born on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where he grew up. His father Peter Bourne and mother Katy Bourne are both triathletes.
Summer Ross is an American beach volleyball player. She was the FIVB 2010 Youth Under-19 and Junior Under-21 world champion, the only player to win both titles in the same year and was named 2010 USA Volleyball Beach Female Athlete of the Year. As of 2018, her partner is Sara Hughes.
Sarah Lindsey Pavan is a Canadian former beach volleyball and indoor volleyball player. She was part of the Canada women's national volleyball team at the 2010 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in Japan. With Melissa Humana-Paredes, she won the women's gold medal at the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships.

Sara Elizabeth Hughes is an American beach volleyball player. With teammate Kelly Cheng she achieved a career-high world ranking of No. 2 in August 2023. Hughes has won six tournaments on the AVP Pro Tour and seven gold medals, one silver medal, and three bronze medals on the FIVB World Tour/Pro Beach Tour.
