Early life
Thompson was born in Edina, Minnesota, to parents Tyrone Doleman and Mary Thompson. Her father also had an athletic career, as he played basketball at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, with the Harlem Globetrotters and eight years professionally overseas. Her uncle was Pro Football Hall of Famer Chris Doleman.
Thompson initially played basketball in middle school, but became frustrated with it and decided to try volleyball. After just two years of club volleyball, she got her first NCAA Division I scholarship offer. [2]
She attended Edina High School where she was a four-year letterwinner, won two conference championships (2011, 2012) and led the team in blocks and kills during her senior season. [3] She first played club volleyball at Club 43, but then transferred to Northern Lights, leading them to an AAU 17 Open title. [4]
Career
Cincinnati
Thompson played college volleyball for Cincinnati, where she was the a three time unanimous American Athletic Conference player of the year and a two time AVCA All-American, garnering first-team honors as well as North Region Player of the Year in her redshirt senior season in 2019. [5] In a win over Connecticut on Nov. 3, 2019, she had 50 kills in the match which is the most kills ever in an NCAA Division I match since the rally-scoring era began. [6]
Thompson's volleyball career almost ended before she could finish out her college career when she suffered a UCL injury in her elbow during practice. She successfully underwent Tommy John surgery and recovered from her injury, returning to play after taking a redshirt season in 2017. [7]
In her final season, she led Cincinnati to the 2019 NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament Sweet Sixteen round, where they lost in a close five set match to Penn State. It was the first time any school from the American Athletic Conference made it into the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA tournament. [8] She finished her collegiate career ranked seventh all-time in career kills in NCAA history and led the nation in kills, points, kills per set and points per set. She is the all-time leader in career kills at Cincinnati. [3]
Professional clubs
Thompson signed her first professional volleyball contract in 2019 began when she played for Turkish club Fenerbahçe. She then signed with Eczacıbaşı VitrA, another club from Turkey, for the 2020–2021 season. [9] She was named best outside hitter in the 2020 Turkish Super Cup, helping Eczacıbaşı VitrA to the Turkish League Title. [10] Although she was to play another season with Eczacıbaşı VitrA in 2021–2022, she parted ways with the team by mutual agreement in the early stages of the season. [11] Thompson returned to the United States to continue treatment for the ankle injury she sustained during the 2020 Olympics. [12]
In June 2022, Italian Serie A1 team Vero Volley Milano announced that Thompson would join the team for the 2022–2023 season. [13]
During the 2023 northern hemisphere summer, Jordan was signed to VakıfBankSporKulübü / VakıfBank Istanbul.
USA National Team
Thompson's first major tournament play with the USA National Team came in 2019 during the 2020 Summer Olympics qualifier tournament, where she helped Team USA qualify for the Olympics. She was one of just three players on Team USA's qualifying roster with collegiate eligibility, and was the only one of the three to see playing time. [14]
She was chosen to represent USA at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League, where she scored 33 points versus Brazil in the Finals Round pool play. [15] USA would eventually win the gold medal. After a one-year delay due to the 2020 Nations League being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was selected to again represent USA at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League in May 2021. She had a match high 17 points in USA's sweep of Thailand. [16] USA won the gold medal for the third year in a row after defeating Brazil, 3 sets to 1. [17]
On June 7, 2021, she was named to the 12-player Olympic roster for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. [18] In a pool play match against China, Thompson led all players with 34 total points, helping team USA win 3–0 against the defending Olympic champions. [19] After suffering an ankle injury in a pool match against Russia, [20] she did not make an appearance for the remainder of the tournament. Despite Thompson's absence, USA would eventually win the gold medal, the first in program history, after defeating Brazil in straight sets. [21]
In June 2022, Thompson returned to national team competition after recovering from her ankle injury sustained during the 2020 Olympic Games, when she played in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League tournament. She had 15 points in a win vs. the Dominican Republic. [12]
Thompson was expected to compete in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship, but did not make the final roster at the last minute due to injury. [22]
Foluke Atinuke Gunderson is an indoor volleyball player who plays as a middle blocker for Japanese club Hisamitsu Springs. Born in Canada, she represents the United States internationally. Gunderson won gold with the national team at the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix, 2014 World Championship, the Rimini Volleyball Nations League, and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, silver at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Her 2020 Olympics win allowed her to complete the trifecta of winning an Olympic bronze, silver, and gold medal.
Nancy Jean Metcalf is an American indoor volleyball player. She represented the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where she finished in fifth place with the USA National Team. She missed the 2008 Olympics with a torn labrum, and was not named to the national team in 2012.
Neslihan Demir is a retired Turkish volleyball star. She is one of the most successful athletes of Turkey and has been among FIVB Heroes. She represented her country as the flag bearer at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the official advertisement face of Turkey for the 2020 Summer Olympics candidateship along with basketballer Hedo Türkoğlu. She was a left-handed opposite hitter and won numerous individual awards in the international tournaments. She studied at Gazi University.
Áurea Esther "Aury" Cruz Dalmau is an indoor and beach volleyball player from Puerto Rico who currently plays for the Orlando Valkyries of the Pro Volleyball Federation. She is best known for competing for the Puerto Rico national team at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, where she was named Best Server at the event.
Jordan Quinn Larson is an American professional volleyball player who plays as an outside hitter for the United States women's national volleyball team. A four-time Olympian, Larson earned the USA its first-ever gold in women's volleyball at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She also has two silver medals from the 2012 and 2024 Summer Olympics and a bronze medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Carli Ellen Lloyd is an American professional volleyball player who played as a setter for the United States women's national volleyball team. She played college women's volleyball at the University of California, Berkeley. Lloyd won bronze with the national team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Tijana Bošković is a Serbian professional volleyball player. A left-handed opposite, she has won gold medals with the Serbia women's national volleyball team at the 2018 and 2022 World Championships and the 2017 and 2019 European Championships. She is also a two-time Olympic medalist, having won silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and bronze at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
TeTori "Tori" Elsie Dixon is an American indoor volleyball player for the LOVB Salt Lake of the LOVB Pro. She is best known for being part of the United States national team that won the 2014 World Championship gold medal.
Nada Meawad is an Egyptian indoor and beach volleyball player, a member of the Egypt women's national volleyball team. She made her international debut when she was 15 years old on the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship in Thailand. She started playing in El Shams Club at the age of five years old. Nada Meawad and her teammate Doaa Elghobashy were the first ever African team to take part in the FIVB beach volleyball Olympic Games in 2016. She is a Five-time AVCA First Team All-American and Three-time NAIA Player of the Year 2018, 2020 and 2021 while playing college volleyball at Park University.
Micha Danielle Hancock is an American indoor volleyball player for the United States women's national volleyball team. Hancock played setter for the Penn State women's volleyball team, and won back-to-back national championships in 2013 and 2014. Hancock won gold with the national team at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Michelle Bartsch-Hackley is an American professional volleyball player for the United States women's national volleyball team. She played collegiate volleyball with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini from 2008 to 2011. She won gold with the national team at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Megan Eileen Courtney-Lush is an American indoor professional volleyball player for the Columbus Fury of the Pro Volleyball Federation and the United States women's national volleyball team. Courtney played outside hitter for the Penn State women's volleyball team, and won back to back national championships in 2013 and 2014. With the USA national team, she played at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix. She was named the best libero at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League. Courtney was also selected as an alternate to the 2020 USA Olympic Team but did not travel to Tokyo.
Chiaka Sylvia Ogbogu is an American professional volleyball player. As a member of the United States women's volleyball team she has earned titles at multiple international competitions, including a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and a silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Dana Lynn Rettke is an American professional volleyball player for Eczacıbaşı Dynavit in the Turkish Sultanlar Ligi. She played collegiate volleyball at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and is the first five-time AVCA First Team All American in collegiate history. Rettke was also a member of the U.S. national team and has won All-Big Ten honors in each of her five college seasons, was the 2019–20 Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year and the 2021-2022 winner of the Honda Sports Award for women's volleyball.
Kathryn Rose Plummer Boden is an American professional volleyball player who plays as an outside hitter for the United States women's national volleyball team and the Turkish club Eczacıbaşı Dynavit.
Haleigh Meridian Washington is an American volleyball player of the United States women's national volleyball team. Washington was an All-American middle blocker for the Penn State women's volleyball team, where she helped lead the team to the 2014 NCAA national championship. Washington won gold with the national team at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Jordyn Ashley Poulter is an American volleyball player. As a member of the United States women's national volleyball team, she has earned several international titles, including the program's first-ever Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and a silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Poulter played collegiate volleyball with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini from 2015 to 2018.
