Matthew John Anderson (born April 18, 1987) is an American professional volleyball player and member of the United States men's national volleyball team. He is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won bronze medals at the 2016 and 2024 Summer Olympics, and was part of the gold-winning teams at the 2014 World League and 2015 World Cup. With the Russian volleyball club Zenit Kazan, he has won numerous CEV Champions League titles.
Anderson was born in Buffalo, New York and raised in the nearby town of West Seneca. He grew up playing multiple sports and began playing volleyball at age 15. He attended West Seneca West High School, where he led his volleyball team to a state championship in 2004 and a 17–0 record in his senior year. [1]
Anderson attended Pennsylvania State University, where he helped the volleyball team win their second-ever NCAA Championship. He was named Most Outstanding Player and AVCA Player of the Year for his performance. [2]
On July 1, 2008, Anderson announced he would forgo his 2009 senior year at Penn State and signed a professional contract with Hyundai Capital Skywalkers of the Korean League. [3] In his debut season, Anderson helped the Skywalkers claim first in the regular season before losing 3–1 in the championship series. He then played two seasons in the Italian league, first as part of Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia and then for Casa Modena.
In 2012, he moved to Zenit Kazan in Russia. During his first year with the team, he won a bronze medal in the Russian Championship and CEV Champions League. [4] In 2014, Zenit Kazan won the Russian Championship, with Anderson being named Most Valuable Player of the league. [5] [6] He played with Zenit Kazan until 2018.
Anderson returned to Modena Volley for the 2019–20 season. [7] In 2021, he joined Sir Safety Perugia, then returned to Russia to play with Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2022. [8] In his 2023–2024 season, Anderson played for Ziraat Bankasi of the Turkish league. After earning bronze in the Champions League with the team, Anderson was named best outside hitter. [9] [10]
Anderson has been a member of the United States men's national volleyball team since 2008 and has been the team's leading scorer since 2011. [11] In 2012, Anderson was the youngest player named to the roster for the 2012 Summer Olympics. [12] With the team, he earned a bronze medal at the 2016 and 2024 Summer Olympics. [13]
In addition to the Olympics, Anderson has earned numerous medals at major international competitions, including gold at the 2015 World Cup and 2013 and 2023 NORCECA Continental Championships, silver at the 2019 and 2023 Volleyball Nations League, and bronze at the 2018 Volleyball Nations League and 2019 World Cup. Anderson married food stylist and photographer Jackie Gillum in 2020. They have two children together, a son named Michael James and a daughter named Virginia June. [14] The family resides in Zionsville, Indiana. [1] Anderson is close friends with his Penn State and U.S. national teammate Max Holt, whom he considers an uncle to his children. [15]
In 2014, Anderson took a break from volleyball due to depression stemming from the deaths of his father and cousin. [16] [17]

Foluke Atinuke Gunderson is an indoor volleyball player who plays as a middle blocker for Japanese club Hisamitsu Springs. Born in Canada, she represents the United States internationally. Gunderson won gold with the national team at the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix, 2014 World Championship, the Rimini Volleyball Nations League, and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, silver at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Her 2020 Olympics win allowed her to complete the trifecta of winning an Olympic bronze, silver, and gold medal.
Lloy James Ball is an American former volleyball player, a member of American national team in 1993–2008, a participant of the Olympic Games and gold medalist of Olympics Beijing 2008, gold medalist of the NORCECA Championship 2007 and World League 2008, silver medalist of the Pan American 1995, bronze medalist of the World Championship 1994, and 2015 inductee to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. When not on the court actively playing the game, Ball operates Team Pineapple, a volleyball clinic that also features his father, Arnie Ball.
Sheilla Tavares de Castro is a former volleyball player from Brazil who represented her native country at the 2008 Summer Olympics and in the 2012 Summer Olympics. On both occasions the Brazilian national team won the gold medal. She also played the 2016 Summer Olympics, when Brazil placed fifth. She retired on April 9, 2022.
Nancy Jean Metcalf is an American indoor volleyball player. She represented her native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where she finished in fifth place with the USA National Team. She missed the 2008 Olympics with a torn labrum, and was not named to the national team in 2012.
Bethania de la Cruz de Peña is a volleyball player from the Dominican Republic, currently playing for the Omaha Supernovas of the Pro Volleyball Federation. She is best known for winning the gold medal with the Dominican women's national team at the 2009 NORCECA Championship and the 2010 Pan-American Cup.
Áurea Esther "Aury" Cruz Dalmau is an indoor and beach volleyball player from Puerto Rico who currently plays for the Orlando Valkyries of the Pro Volleyball Federation. She is best known for competing for the Puerto Rico national team at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, where she was named Best Server at the event.
Clayton Iona "Clay" Stanley is an American former volleyball player, who was a member of United States men's national volleyball team, a participant of the Olympic Games, Olympic Champion 2008, NORCECA Champion 2005, and multimedalist of the World League.
David Cameron Lee is an American volleyball player, currently working as the head coach for Indian Club, Bengaluru Torpedoes. As a member of the United States men's national volleyball team, he is an Olympic Champion at the 2008 Summer Olympics, an Olympic bronze medalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and a three-time Olympian. He is also a two-time NORCECA Champion, a gold medalist at the 2015 World Cup, and a gold medalist of the World League.
Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Volkov is a former Russian volleyball player, a member of Russia men's national volleyball team. He was 2012 Olympic Champion, bronze medalist of the 2008 Olympic Games, gold medalist of the 2011 World Cup, silver medalist of the 2007 European Championship, multimedalist of the World League. Recently he is a head coach of Belogorie.
Maxim Mikhaylovich Mikhaylov is a Russian professional volleyball player, a member of the Russia men's national volleyball team and Russian club VC Zenit-Kazan, gold medalist at the Olympic Games London 2012, silver medalist at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, bronze medalist at the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, gold medalist at the World Cup 2011, European Champion 2013 and 2017 and a multiple medalist of the World League.
Bartosz Kamil Kurek is a Polish professional volleyball player who plays as an opposite spiker for ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle and the Poland national team. Kurek took part in 4 Olympic Games winning silver medal in Paris. He also won the 2018 World Champion title as well as the 2009 and the 2023 European Championship titles. In 2019, he became the first ever volleyball player to be voted the Polish Sports Personality of the Year.
Jordan Quinn Larson is an American professional volleyball player who plays as an outside hitter for the United States women's national volleyball team. A four-time Olympian, Larson earned the USA its first-ever gold in women's volleyball at the 2020 Summer Olympics, adding to her silver and bronze medals from the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, respectively.
Wilfredo León Venero is a professional volleyball player who plays as an outside hitter for PlusLiga club Bogdanka LUK Lublin. Born in Cuba, he represents Poland at international level. He was a member of his country of birth's national team from 2007 to 2012.
Taylor Lee Sander is an American professional beach volleyball player and former indoor volleyball player. As a member of the U.S. national team, he won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2018 World Championship. The 2014 World League and the 2015 World Cup winner.
Kimberly Hill is an American former professional volleyball player who played as an outside hitter for the United States women's national volleyball team. Hill won gold with the national team at the 2014 World Championship and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, and bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Micah Makanamaikalani Christenson is an American professional volleyball player who plays as a setter for Zenit Kazan and the U.S. national team. He was a bronze medalist at the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Paris 2024 and the 2018 World Championship; the 2014 World League, 2015 World Cup and 2023 World Cup winner.
Erik Thomas Shoji is an American professional volleyball player who plays as a libero for ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle and the U.S. national team. Shoji was a bronze medalist at the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Paris 2024 and the 2018 World Championship; the 2014 World League and 2015 World Cup winner, and a two–time Champions League winner with ZAKSA.
Earvin Ngapeth is a French professional volleyball player, member of the France national volleyball team and Italian club Modena Volley, 2015 European Champion, gold medallist of the World League, French Champion (2010), Italian Champion (2016), and Olympic Champion.
Aaron Joseph Russell is an American professional volleyball player who plays as an outside hitter for Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie and the U.S. national team. He was a bronze medalist at the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Paris 2024 and the 2018 World Championship.
Viktor Evgenyevich Poletaev is a Russian volleyball player. He is a member of the Russia men's national volleyball team and Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg.
