Sayonara (1954) is a novel published by American author James A. Michener. Set during the early 1950s, it tells the story of Major Gruver, a soldier stationed in Japan, who falls in love with Hana-Ogi, a Japanese woman. The novel follows their cross-cultural Japanese romance and illuminates the racism of the post-World War II time period.

Film adaptation

Sayonara was made into a film of the same name in 1957 directed by Joshua Logan and starring Marlon Brando.

Two of Kumeta's latest serializations include Sekkachi Hakushaku to Jikan Dorobō, published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from November 2013 to January 2015, and Nankuru Neesan, published in Kodansha's Young Magazine the 3rd from February 2016 to February 2019. He is currently serializing Studio Pulp for Rakuen Le Paradis of Hakusensha and Kakushigoto in Monthly Shōnen Magazine.

    Sakyo Komatsu was a Japanese science fiction writer and screenwriter. He was one of the most well known and highly regarded science fiction writers in Japan.

    Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kōji Kumeta. It was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from April 2005 to June 2012 and the chapters collected into 30 tankōbon volumes. The series follows Nozomu Itoshiki, a teacher who takes all aspects of life, word, and culture in the most negative light possible. It satirizes politics, media, and Japanese society. In 2007, the manga received the 31st Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category. The manga has been adapted into three anime television series and two sets of OVAs animated by Shaft between 2007 and 2010.
