The Seventh-day Adventist tertiary student ministry is a group belonging to the Seventh-day Adventist Church which serves on some universities and other tertiary education campuses throughout the world. Some of these are run independently of the official church. Two of these organizations are the Adventist Christian Fellowship of North America and the Adventist Students Association of Australia.

Seventh-day Adventist Church Protestant Christian church founded in 1863

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Protestant Christian denomination which is distinguished by its observance of Saturday, the seventh day of the week in Christian and Jewish calendars, as the Sabbath, and its emphasis on the imminent Second Coming (advent) of Jesus Christ. The denomination grew out of the Millerite movement in the United States during the mid-19th century and it was formally established in 1863. Among its founders was Ellen G. White, whose extensive writings are still held in high regard by the church.

The population of 26 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated on the eastern seaboard. Australia's capital is Canberra, and its largest city is Sydney. The country's other major metropolitan areas are Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

North America

Adventist Christian Fellowship is a collegiate ministry of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. [1] ACF is the name of both the ACF Network, which is run by the Division, and of many individual fellowship groups, which are organized on a local level. The NAD Adventist Christian Fellowship Network was founded in 2005 "to build Christian fellowship chapters on public campuses that honor God and nurture the spiritual lives of students in North America". [2] [3] Adventist Christian Fellowship groups can be found on public university and other tertiary campuses across the United States, Canada, and beyond. [2]

College religious organizations provide campus ministry services to students of colleges and universities throughout the world. These are most commonly found in secular colleges and universities to cater to students of particular religious beliefs where the institution is not affiliated with, cannot endorse a particular religion, or hire its own religious ministers. These are sometimes affiliated as registered student organizations of their local university.

North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists organization

The North American Division of Seventh-day Adventist is a sub-entity of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, which oversees the Church's work in the United States, Canada, French possessions of St. Pierre and Miquelon, the British overseas territory of Bermuda, the US territories in the Pacific of Guam, Wake Island, Northern Mariana Islands, and three states in free association with the United States - Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Its headquarters, long in the same building as the General Conference, moved to separate quarters in Columbia, Maryland in 2017. As of June 30, 2018, the Division's membership was 1,253,441.

In addition to the NAD Adventist Christian Fellowship Network, the CAMPUS network, a ministry of the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and the Morning Star Christian Fellowship network, a para-church organization, also help to organize Adventist student groups on university and other tertiary campuses. [4] [5] Most CAMPUS and Morning Star groups are also affiliated with the larger ACF Network.

Oceania

The Adventist Students Association (ASA) is the best known Adventist student group in Oceania, and operates primarily in Australia. It runs socials, meetings, Bible studies and outreach. Each year, week-long "Convention" and "Symposium" events are held in Australia. ASA is run by students, with support from the church. Its local chapters include:

Oceania is a geographic region that includes Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Spanning the eastern and western hemispheres, Oceania has a land area of 8,525,989 square kilometres (3,291,903 sq mi) and a population of 40 million. Situated in the southeast of the Asia-Pacific region, Oceania, when compared to continental regions, is the smallest in land area and the second smallest in population after Antarctica.

Brisbane capital city of Queensland, Australia

Brisbane is the capital of and the most populated city in the Australian state of Queensland, and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of approximately 2.5 million, and the South East Queensland metropolitan region, centred on Brisbane, encompasses a population of more than 3.6 million.

Queensland North-east state of Australia

Queensland is the second-largest and third-most populous state in the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated in the north-east of the country, it is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west and south respectively. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. To its north is the Torres Strait, with Papua New Guinea located less than 200 km across it from the mainland. The state is the world's sixth-largest sub-national entity, with an area of 1,852,642 square kilometres (715,309 sq mi).

Sydney Metropolis in Australia

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds Port Jackson and extends about 70 km (43.5 mi) on its periphery towards the Blue Mountains to the west, Hawkesbury to the north, the Royal National Park to the south and Macarthur to the south-west. Sydney is made up of 658 suburbs, 40 local government areas and 15 contiguous regions. Residents of the city are known as "Sydneysiders". As of June 2017, Sydney's estimated metropolitan population was 5,230,330 and is home to approximately 65% of the state's population.

New Zealand Country in Oceania

New Zealand is a sovereign island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses—the North Island, and the South Island —and around 600 smaller islands. It has a total land area of 268,000 square kilometres (103,500 sq mi). New Zealand is situated some 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long period of isolation, New Zealand developed a distinct biodiversity of animal, fungal, and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.

Papua New Guinea Constitutional monarchy in Oceania

Papua New Guinea, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea is a country in Oceania that occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia, a region of the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of Australia. Its capital, located along its southeastern coast, is Port Moresby. The western half of New Guinea forms the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua. It is the world's 3rd largest island country with 462,840 km2 (178,700 sq mi).

It is commonly known as PNGATSA. Under PNGATSA there are several Provincial Groups. Among those is Enga Adventist Students Association (EASA) which is the oldest one, started in 1984. EASA gave birth to PNGATSA in the same year. Thus, EASA is as old as PNGATSA. Others are; the Western Highlands Adventist Students Association which is aimed at ages 12–25, Southern Highlands Adventist Students Association, Simbu Adventist Students Association, Sepik Adventist Students Association. WHASA was formed in 1995, and has a membership of 500 (as of 2010).

PNGATSA also have institutional Adventist Student groups. Few of those are:

  2. University of Technology Adventist Tertiary Students Association, based in Lae
  3. University of Goroka Adventist Tertiary Students Association, based in Goroka
  4. Divine Word Adventist Students Tertiary Association, based in Madang
  5. Vudal Adventist Tertiary Students Association, based in Kokopo

Further, Provincial groups have conventions in their home provinces. EASA hosts yearly Convention while the others have conventions bi-annually, interchangeably with PNGATSA. PNGATSA is now (in 2017) thirty-three (33) years old. Its Ministry in PNG was recognised by the South Pacific Division in 2005. Further, PNGATSA was recognised by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA GC) in March 2015. In that process a student leader from PNG, Nathan Sapala was invited by the SDA GC to attend the first Public Campus Ministries Summit and Sympossium at the World Church headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. In that summit PNGATSA was announced as the biggest Student Ministry in the world with a membership of over twenty thousand (20 000+).

Additional Adventist communities of students exist which are not formally organised.

Since 1970 the SDATS has been accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system.

Adventist Forums

Adventist Forum (AF) is an international non-profit organization of Seventh-day Adventists. It publishes Spectrum magazine. Its stated aim is to create community through open conversation. Local groups of the association are known as local forum chapters. It was founded by Adventist graduate students in the 1960s, and is known for its generally "progressive" Adventist perspective.

Standish brothers Australian historical Adventist

Colin D. Standish and Russell Roland Standish were identical twin brothers and "historic" Seventh-day Adventists. They were often referred to collectively as the Standish brothers. They co-authored many books together, which have been published by their Hartland Institute.

Dominican Adventist University

Dominican Adventist University is a Seventh-day Adventist co-educational university located in the Dominican Republic, and accredited by the Adventist Accrediting Association. UNAD offers undergraduate and graduate level degrees.

Seventh-day Adventist Kinship International is a support organization that provides a spiritual and social community to current and former Seventh-day Adventists who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, asexual and/or intersex (LGBTI), and have felt hurt or rejected because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. SDA Kinship offers them the compassion and support perceived to not be available within the organized Adventist Church.

Escondido Adventist Academy Private k–12, college preparatory school in Escondido, California, USA

Escondido Adventist Academy (EAA) is a private, Seventh-day Adventist-governed Christian school in Escondido, California, serving students in grades K-12. It is operated by a school board which represents the 14 Seventh-day Adventist churches in San Diego North County. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system. Escondido Adventist Academy is a part of the Southeastern California Conference of the SDA School System.

San Yu Adventist School Private school in Singapore

San Yu Adventist School (SYAS) is a private Christian school in Singapore which caters to students from ages 7 to 16 and 17. It follows the local education system and is fully owned and operated by the Singapore Adventist Conference. The current school was a result of the merger of two Adventist schools: the English-medium Seventh-day Adventist School previously located in Upper Serangoon Road and the Chinese-medium San Yu High School.

Herbert Fletcher University

Herbert Fletcher University is a non profit online distance learning educational institution of the Inter‐American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system. It is named after the late Herbert L. Fletcher who was a church leader and educator within the Division for half a century. He was a past president of West Indies College.

Adventurers (Seventh-day Adventist) youth organization

The Adventurer Club is a program for young children created by the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in 1972, similar to Scouting.

Delap SDA School Independent k–12 school in Delap, Marshall Islands

Delap SDA School, also known as Majuro SDA School or Seventh-day Adventist is a private co-educational K-12 Christian school operated by the Guam-Micronesia Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. It is located in Delap, on the island of Majuro, in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The school is located directly beside the Majuro Cooperative School, and within 500 metres (1,600 ft) of the hospital and the capitol building.
