Sh 2-297 (also known as Sharpless 297) is an emission nebula in the constellation Canis Major. The region was catalogued in 1959 in the extended seconded edition of the Sharpless catalogue. [3] This area is part of the Canis Major OB1 Association, and is a very active area of new star formation. [1]
Studies in 1988 found that the bright star illuminating the nebula was 8th magnitude HD 53623 / HIP 34178 with spectral class B1II/III. [4] [1] Later in 2004 it was shown that there was embedded a cold but massive Young Stellar Object or YSO within Sh 2-297 near the edge of one of the dark rifts. [5] This object has been observed in the far-infrared, but it is so deeply embedded in an interstellar cloud that it is undetectable in shorter wavelength observations such as the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), leading it to be originally named "Unidentified young stellar object 1" or UYSO-1. [6] It was further revealed that this unseen stellar source produces a carbon monoxide (CO) bipolar outflow with a total mass of 5.4 M☉ solar masses, while the surrounding extended envelope weighs 30 M☉–40 M☉. [5] [1] Some 96 other YSOs have been discovered to be part of Sh-297, having a mean age of one million years and range in masses between 0.3 M☉ and 2.0 M☉. [1] Many variable stars are also assigned with this nebula complex, including the three brightest: MW Ori, TT Ori and V559 Ori.
Distance is estimated between 1.0 and 1.4 kpc. (3,300–4,600 ly.), [1] averaging 1.2 kpc. or 3,900 ly.
This region was catalogued as part of the major clustering of reflection nebula as CMa R1 by van den Bergh in 1966. [7] Reflection nebulas were identified on blue plates of the Palomar Sky Survey, with positive confirmation made by checking nebulosity on the red plates. It was again later catalogued as LBN 1037 or LBN 225.27-02.42 [8]
The Orion molecular cloud complex is a star-forming region with stellar ages ranging up to 12 Myr. Two giant molecular clouds are a part of it, Orion A and Orion B. The stars currently forming within the complex are located within these clouds. A number of other somewhat older stars no longer associated with the molecular gas are also part of the complex, most notably the Orion's Belt, as well as the dispersed population north of it. Near the head of Orion there is also a population of young stars that is centered on Meissa. The complex is between 1 000 and 1 400 light-years away, and hundreds of light-years across.
Sh 2-279 is an HII region and bright nebulae that includes a reflection nebula located in the constellation Orion. It is the northernmost part of the asterism known as Orion's Sword, lying 0.6° north of the Orion Nebula. The reflection nebula embedded in Sh 2-279 is popularly known as the Running Man Nebula.
Sigma Orionis or Sigma Ori is a multiple star system in the constellation Orion, consisting of the brightest members of a young open cluster. It is found at the eastern end of the belt, south west of Alnitak and west of the Horsehead Nebula which it partially illuminates. The combined brightness of the component stars is magnitude 3.80.
CS Camelopardalis is a binary star in reflection nebula VdB 14, in the constellation Camelopardalis.
Sh 2-155 is a diffuse nebula in the constellation Cepheus, within a larger nebula complex containing emission, reflection, and dark nebulosity. It is widely known as the Cave Nebula, though that name was applied earlier to Ced 201, a different nebula in Cepheus. Sh 2-155 is an ionized H II region with ongoing star formation activity, at an estimated distance of 725 parsecs from Earth.
NGC 6820 is a small reflection nebula near the open cluster NGC 6823 in Vulpecula. The reflection nebula and cluster are embedded in a large faint emission nebula called Sh 2-86. The whole area of nebulosity is often referred to as NGC 6820.
FU Orionis is a variable and binary star system in the constellation of Orion, that in 1937 rose in apparent visual magnitude from 16.5 to 9.6, and has since been around magnitude 9. The name FU Orionis is a variable star designation in the Argelander system, which are assigned sequentially as new variables are discovered. FU Orionis is about 1,360 light years distant and is associated with the molecular cloud Barnard 35.
VY Canis Majoris is an extreme oxygen-rich red hypergiant or red supergiant and pulsating variable star 1.2 kiloparsecs from the Solar System in the slightly southern constellation of Canis Major. It is one of the largest known stars, one of the most luminous and massive red supergiants, and one of the most luminous stars in the Milky Way.
GRO J0422+32 is an X-ray nova and black hole candidate that was discovered by the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite on 5 August 1992. During outburst, it was observed to be stronger than the Crab Nebula gamma-ray source out to photon energies of about 500 keV.
HD 165516 is a blue supergiant star in the constellation Sagittarius. It is part of the Sagittarius OB1 association and appears against a rich Milky Way starfield near the Triffid Nebula and Lagoon Nebula.
NML Cygni or V1489 Cygni is a red hypergiant or red supergiant (RSG) in the constellation Cygnus. It is possibly one of the largest known stars currently known, and is also possibly one of the most luminous and massive cool hypergiants, as well as one of the most luminous stars in the Milky Way.
145 G. Canis Majoris is a single K giant or supergiant star in the southern constellation of Canis Major. This star is Gould's 145th of Canis Major in his Uranometria Argentina. Kostjuk erroneously lists it as simply "145 CMa". SIMBAD follows this error in its object query result as "* 145 CMa – Star".
IRAS 19475+3119 is a protoplanetary nebula in the constellation of Cygnus, 15,000 light-years away. The central star, V2513 Cygni, is an F-type post-AGB star.
FN Canis Majoris is a binary star system in the southern constellation Canis Major, near the northern constellation border with Monoceros. It is dimly visible to the naked eye with a combined apparent visual magnitude of 5.41. The system is located at a distance of approximately 3,000 light years from the Sun based on parallax, and is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +31 km/s. It is a runaway star associated with the Sh 2-296 nebula in the CMa OB1 association, and has a conspicuous bow-shock feature.
HD 87643 is a B[e] class binary star embedded in a reflection nebula.
Vulpecula OB1 is an OB association in which a batch of massive stars are being born. It was first identified by W. W. Morgan et al. (1953). The association is located in the Orion Arm about 7,500 light-years away from the Sun. Nebulae that are contained in this association include NGC 6820 and NGC 6823, plus Sharpless 2-88.
Sh 2-308, also designated as Sharpless 308, RCW 11, or LBN 1052, and commonly known as the Dolphin-Head Nebula, is an H II region located near the center of the constellation Canis Major, composed of ionised hydrogen. It is about 8 degrees south of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The nebula is bubble-like and surrounds a Wolf–Rayet star named EZ Canis Majoris. This star is in the brief, pre-supernova phase of its stellar evolution. The nebula is about 4,530 light-years away from Earth, but some sources indicate that both the star and the nebula are up to 5,870 ly (1,800 pc) away. Yet others indicate the nebula is as close as 1,875 ly (575 pc) from Earth.
HD 34989 is a blue-white star in the main sequence, of apparent magnitude 5.80, in the constellation of Orion. It is 1700 light-years from the Solar System.
NGC 759 is an elliptical galaxy located 230 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. NGC 759 was discovered by astronomer by Heinrich d'Arrest on September 17, 1865. It is a member of Abell 262.
Sh 2-185 is an H II region centered on the massive star system Gamma Cassiopeiae in the northern constellation of Cassiopeia. It was included in the second Catalogue of H II Regions, published in 1959 by Stewart Sharpless. Sh 2-185 is located at a distance of approximately 10,500 ly (3.23 kpc) from the Sun. The region is surrounded by a dust shell, and displays several infrared point sources that are a characteristics of young stellar objects.
