Shabareesh Varma is an Indian lyricist, playback singer and actor who works in Malayalam films. [1]

Personal life

Varma was born to P. K Nandana Varma and Sulekha Varma in North Paravur, Ernakulam. After completing his graduation from MES College Marampally, Aluva, he studied at the SAE Institute, in Chennai and graduated with a degree in Audio Engineering and Music Production. He began his acting with two short films "Cling-Cling" and "Neram" (short film) in which he played the protagonist.

Career

He debuted as an actor, lyricist and playback singer in the 2013 film Neram directed by Alphonse Puthren. In 2015, he was an actor and lyricist in Puthren's second directorial, Premam . In 2023, he starred alongside Mammootty as a police officer in Kannur Squad . [2]

The song Pistah, which Shabareesh sang for Neram, was the promo song for the Indian Premier League. [3] In 2016, he sang the official theme song of the Manjappada which is the supporters group of the football team Kerala Blasters. [4] In 2020, he wrote one song for Yennum Yellow, an album released by Kerala Blasters as a tribute to their fans. He also performed the song 'Vaa Varika Vaa' written by Manu Manjith and Nikhil Thomas. [5]

<i>Neram</i> 2013 film by Alphonse Puthren

Neram (transl. 'Time') is a 2013 Indian black comedy thriller film written, directed and edited by Alphonse Puthren in his directorial debut. It is simultaneously made in Malayalam and Tamil languages. It is an extended version of the short film of the same name, which he directed in 2009. It stars Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim and Bobby Simha in both versions. Supporting roles were played by Manoj K. Jayan, Shammi Thilakan, Lalu Alex, and Willson Joseph in Malayalam version, while Nassar, Thambi Ramiah, John Vijay and Shabareesh Varma portrayed the characters in Tamil version.

<i>Premam</i> (soundtrack) 2015 soundtrack album by Rajesh Murugesan

Premam is the soundtrack album for the 2015 Malayalam film of the same name directed by Alphonse Puthren and starring Nivin Pauly. The original soundtrack and background score were composed by Rajesh Murugesan, who had collaborated with Puthren in the film Neram (2013). Shabareesh Varma, beside singing, wrote the lyrics for eight of the nine songs. One song "Rockaankuthu" which had lyrics written by Pradeep Palarr was sung by Tamil film composer Anirudh Ravichander. The soundtrack album was released by the record label Muzik 247 on 14 February 2015 and topped the charts, with songs "Aaluva Puzha" and "Malare" became instant hits. The album was listed as the Best Malayalam Music Album of the year by Apple Music.

Kannur Squad is a 2023 Indian Malayalam-language crime thriller film directed by Roby Varghese Raj in his directorial debut and written by Muhammed Shafi and Rony David Raj. The film stars Mammootty alongside Azees Nedumangad, Rony David Raj, Shabareesh Varma, Kishore and Vijayaraghavan. It was produced by Mammootty under the banner of Mammootty Kampany and was based on the real story of a team of police officers who were part of the Kannur Squad, a crime investigation unit, formed by former Kannur SP S. Sreejith IPS.
