Shannon Rangers is a North Kerry Divisional Gaelic football team in County Kerry, Ireland, based around the Shannon Estuary. Founded in 1940, the team compete in the Kerry Senior Football Championship, which they have won on 5 occasions. [1] They also won the inaugural Munster Senior Club Football Championship in 1964. [2]

The Shannon Rangers club was formed in 1940, [4] when a number of clubs (Ballybunion, Ballydonoghue, Ballylongford, Craughdarrig and Tarbert) decided to form their own team and break away from the then North Kerry divisional side to compete separately in the Kerry Senior Football Championship. [5] In their first year in the Championship they reached the semi-finals, and lost to eventual winners Dingle. The following year they reached the semi-finals again but lost to John Mitchels after a replay. [6]
In 1942 Rangers won the County Championship for the first time when they defeated John Mitchels 2–4 to 1–3 in the final. [7] They reached the final again in 1945 and were victorious again, defeating Killarney Legion 1–7 to 5pts after a replay. [8] Over the following decade they would lose three finals before winning again in 1964. In 1948 they lost to Dingle, [9] in 1953 they lost to Kerins O'Rahilly's and in 1955 they lost to South Kerry. [10] The following year Shannon Rangers didn't enter the Championship as Feale Rangers represented all of North Kerry. It wasn't until 1964, when Listowel, Moyvane and Tarbert broke away from Feale Rangers to form St. Vincents that the remaining clubs reformed Shannon Rangers to enter the Championship. [11]
The new Shannon Rangers were immediately successful, as after beating Castleisland (District) in the quarter-final, South Kerry in the semi-final they then defeated East Kerry 1–10 to 1–5 in the final of the 1964 Kerry Senior Football Championship to win their third title. [12] This victory meant that Rangers would now go on to represent Kerry in the inaugural Munster Senior Club Football Championship. In the Munster quarter-final they defeated Ballysteen of Limerick 5–9 to 4pts and then beat Kilrossanty of Waterford by 2–11 to 5pts in the semi-final. In the final, played at Limerick's Gaelic Grounds they defeated Cooraclare of Clare 2–7 to 4pts. The Shannon Rangers team on the day was: Alan Kennelly (Ballylongford), Tom O'Sullivan (Finuge), Paudie O'Donoghue (Ballylongford), Mike Joe Quinlan (Ballyduff), John Mulvihill (Clounmacon), John McCarthy (Ballylongford), Michael Mulvihill (Ballydonoghue), Jer D. O'Connor (Ballydonoghue), Mick Walsh (Ballylongford), Brian McCarthy (Ballylongford), Tony Barrett (Ballyduff), Teddy O'Sullivan (Ballyduff), Éamonn O’Donoghue (Ballylongford), Ritchard Carey (Finuge), Billy Doran (Duagh). Shannon Rangers' next appearance in the Kerry Senior Football Championship final was in 1971 when they lost to Mid Kerry after a replay, [13] but returned to the final the following year against the same opposition and won by 2–08 to 1–07. [14] Their next final appearance was in 1974 when they lost to Kenmare. [15] Rangers reached the semi-finals of the county championship in 1975 and again in 1976.
In 1976 Tarbert left Shannon Rangers to join Feale Rangers, with Ballydonoghue doing likewise in 1977. Despite losing these clubs, Rangers reached the final for the tenth time in 1977 with players from just Ballylongford and Beale. They played neighbours Feale Rangers in the final and won the match (their fifth title) by 10pts to 6. The following year they would meet Feale Rangers again, this time losing at the semi-final stage. In each of the next five Championships (1979 - 1983) they would reach the semi-finals again, losing on each occasion. [14] Since 1983, Rangers' only semi-final appearance came in 2014 [16] which they lost to Mid Kerry. [17]
At minor level Shannon Rangers have won the Kerry Minor Football Championship on three occasions; 1973, 1974 and 1991. [18]

The North Kerry Senior Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition for GAA clubs affiliated to the North Kerry Football Board, a division of Kerry GAA. The official name of the competition became The Bernard O'Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship in 2000, in honour of the late Bernie O'Callaghan (Beale) who was Chairman of the North Kerry GAA Board for 25 years and did a huge amount of work for North Kerry football.
The Championship runs from October to December each year but has on occasion continued into the New Year due to replays and postponements. It is currently sponsored by McMunn's Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion.The current (2023) holders of the cup are Ballydonoughue who defeated St. Senan's, winning the competition for the 10th time in the club’s history.
Clounmacon are a Gaelic football team in north County Kerry in Ireland. They play in Division 5 of the county league. Clounmacon players also participate in the Kerry Senior Football Championship with the divisional side Feale Rangers.
Pat Corridan is a Gaelic footballer from Finuge, County Kerry, in Ireland. Corrdian plays football for the Finuge GAA club, Feale Rangers divisional side and Kerry senior football team.
Feale Rangers is a Divisional Gaelic football team which is made up of clubs based around the River Feale in North Kerry. The team competes in the Kerry Senior Football Championship which it has won on three occasions.
Paudie O'Donoghue (1944–2008) was an Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Ballylongford and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1964 until 1974.
Stephen Stack was a Gaelic footballer who played with Kerry and Listowel Emmets. He was right corner back on the Kerry team that won the 1997 All Ireland. He was also a member of the 1986 winning team which made him the sole winner of medals in 1986 and 1997. He also won an All Ireland Junior Medal in 1994. He had a reputation as a tight marking defender and a leader in the backs. In 2012 he was unveiled as the manager of Austin Stacks GAA club located in Tralee, County Kerry, the most successful club in Ireland.
John Bunyan was a dual player from County Kerry. He played both football and hurling with Kerry during the 1970s. Originally from Ballydonoghue Johnny joined up with neighbouring Ballyduff who are more well known for hurling rather than football. Bunyan would go on to be a great player at both codes. In football, he won a Munster Under-21 Football Championship in 1968 and an All Ireland Senior medal in 1975. He played at full forward in the Munster Final having a notable battle with Humphrey Kelliher of Cork and also in the All Ireland semi-final against Sligo. He was omitted from the team for the final against Dublin. On the same day in 1975 his brother Robert captained the Kerry Minors to All Ireland victory over Tyrone. In hurling he also had success winning an All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship medal in 1972 and an All-Ireland Senior B Hurling Championship in 1976.
Ballydonoghue GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in north County Kerry, Ireland. It fields Gaelic football teams at underage and adult levels. All teams represent the parish of Ballydonoghue which contains the village of Lisselton. The club's home ground is Denis Dowling Park, Coolard. The club is affiliated to the North Kerry Football Board and is one of six clubs which form the Shannon Rangers divisional side which competes in the Kerry Senior Football Championship. The club was founded during the 1930s following the amalgamation of several smaller teams. Several Ballydonoghue players have played on the Kerry inter-county football team, including three club members who were on the Kerry team that contested the 1947 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final at the Polo Grounds in New York.
