Killarney Legion are a Gaelic Athletic Association club from Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. The club was founded on a March evening in 1929 [1] when a group of eleven men held a meeting in the then Temperance Hall in High Street, Killarney.

History

In the Kerry Senior Football Championship, Legion reached the 3rd round by beating John Mitchels of Tralee 0-16 to 1-6, then losing to rivals Dr. Crokes 1-16 to 0-9. Legion now have a new state of the art clubhouse and have just commenced the development of a stand aligning the southern side of the main pitch. The stature of the juvenile section of the club is at an all-time high at present. Legion's U14 team represented Kerry in the Feile competition of 2006 held in Wicklow and again in 2009 held in Kildare. Also the minor teams (U18) have reached three county finals in a row since 2007, winning two. The club won the Under 21 Club Chamoionship in 2011 and 2012. Legion's senior team was relegated to Division 2 for the 2014 season, but won that straight away. Killarney Legion GAA came so close to winning the County Championship 2015 after beating Mid Kerry, Feale Rangers, Kerins O' Rahillys and Rathmore. Legion met South Kerry in the County Final but lost in extra time of a replay.[ citation needed ]

As of October 2020, the club acquired a new floodlighting system, and upgraded the gym. [2]

The East Kerry Senior Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition for teams affiliated to the East Kerry division. Most adult clubs in the division compete for this cup, even if they are playing at junior or intermediate grades. In recent years, the competition has been dominated by Dr Crokes, who won their thirtieth championship in December 2018. The winners receive the Dr O'Donoghue Cup. The main sponsor for many years is the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney.

Tadhgie Lyne was an Irish Gaelic footballer with Kerry. Called 'the Prince of Forwards', Lyne was one of the finest scoring forwards of his time.

Kerry are by far the most successful team in the history of Gaelic football. They have won 38 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and have appeared in countless other All-Ireland Football Finals. Kerry footballers have been garlanded with countless awards and hold numerous individual records in the sport. Pat Spillane received nine All Stars during a glittering career, a feat matched by no other Gaelic footballer, while Tadhg Kennelly is the only holder of both an AFL Premiership medallion and a Senior All-Ireland Championship medal, the highest possible achievement in the sports of Australian rules football and Gaelic football. Aloysius "Weeshie" Fogarty was an Irish Gaelic footballer, referee and sports broadcaster. His league and championship career with the Kerry senior team lasted three seasons from 1969 to 1971.

The 2015 Kerry Senior Football Championship is the 114th edition of the Kerry GAA's premier club Gaelic football tournament for senior graded teams in County Kerry, Ireland. The tournament consists of 20 teams, with the winner going on to represent Kerry in the Munster Senior Club Football Championship, unless they are a divisional club. In this case, the winner of the Kerry Club Football Championship will represent the county. The championship has a back-door format for the first two rounds before proceeding to a knock-out format. Generally, any team to lose two matches will be knocked out of the championship.
