Shatrusalyasinhji Jadeja (born 20 February 1939) is a former Titular Maharaja of Nawanagar State and a former first-class cricketer.
His father,H H Jam Saheb Sri Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji,played one first-class match,captaining Western India against MCC in 1933-34,just after succeeding Ranjitsinhji to the title of Maharaja of Nawanagar. [1] Shatrusalyasinhji is also the nephew of Duleepsinhji.
Shatrusalyasinhji was educated at Malvern College in England,where he played for the First XI in 1957 and 1958. In 1957 he took 42 wickets at 15.11 and made 166 runs at 23.71,and in its schools report for the season Wisden (referring to him as "M.K.S. Shatrushalyasinhji") noted his "ability to bowl off-breaks at an unusually speedy pace". [2] In 1958 he was "not as effective as in the previous year",taking 22 wickets at 18.22. [3]
Shatrusalyasinhji made his first-class debut in the 1958–59 season,playing for Saurashtra against Bombay,scoring 15 not out and a duck and taking the wicket of Arvind Apte. [4] In 1959 he and his father visited England [5] and he played three matches for Sussex Second XI as an amateur,without much success. [6]
He played three matches for Saurashtra in 1959–60,four in 1961–62,and four in 1962–63,with a highest score of 65, [7] the top score of the match,in a victory over Baroda in 1961–62. [8] His highest career score came against Maharashtra in 1963–64,when batting at number three he scored 164 not out in seven and a half hours [9] out of a total of 382. [10]
In 1964,he brought his old Sussex teammates Les Lenham and Tony Buss to India;Lenham to coach him,Buss to bowl to him. Lenham said Shatrusalyasinhji "wanted to be a Ranji and a Duleep,all rolled into one,but he played too exotically". [11] His batting yielded only 113 runs in four matches in 1964–65, [7] but he did take his best bowling figures,4 for 101 against Baroda,in a Saurashtra team that also included two other members of the Jamnagar royal family,Kumar Indrajitsinhji and Chatrapalsinhji. [12]
In 1966–67,Shatrusalyasinhji's final season of first-class cricket,he captained Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy,and Indian Starlets to the final of the Moin-ud-Dowlah Gold Cup Tournament, [13] and was also selected for West Zone to play the touring West Indians. [14]
Shatrusalyasinhji was head of the Saurashtra Cricket Association till 1972.
At one stage he kept around 8000 pets in his palaces. He has a 45-acre (18 ha) walled wildlife reserve opposite his house in Jamnagar. [15]
During a three-day tour of Gujarat in April 2022,the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Shatrusalyasinhji at his home. He spoke of their friendship and paid tribute to the goodwill Shatrusalyasinhji and his family had fostered around the world. [16]
Shatrusalyasinhji married a member of the Nepalese royal family, [17] and succeeded to the title of Maharaja Jam Saheb of Nawanagar in February 1966 on the death of his father. When the Twenty-sixth Amendment to the Constitution of India was passed in 1971,abolishing princely privy purses and entitlements,he became H H Jam Saheb Sri Shatrusalyasinhji. [17]
Colonel Kumar Sri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II,,often known as Ranji or K. S. Ranjitsinhji,was an Indian cricketer who later became ruler of his native Indian princely state of Nawanagar from 1907 to 1933. The main part of his cricket career was from 1893 to 1904 when,as one of the greatest batsmen of his time,he played for Cambridge University,Sussex,London County and,in 15 Test matches,for England.

Nawanagar was an Indian princely state in the historical Halar region,located on the southern shores of the Gulf of Kutch. It was ruled by the Jadeja Rajput dynasty and became a part of newly formed India. Its capital city was Nawanagar city,now known as Jamnagar. It had an area of 3,791 square miles (9,820 km2) and a population estimated at 336,779 in 1901. Its rulers,who use the title of "Jam Saheb" are of the same clan as the Rao of Kutch. They were entitled to a 13-gun salute. The state flag was a rectangular red flag with a white elephant,near and facing the hoist. During the British,the state was part of the Kathiawar Agency,within the Gujarat Division of Bombay Presidency.
Jadeja is a Samma Rajput clan that inhabits the Indian state of Gujarat and the Tharparkar district of Sindh,Pakistan. They originated from Sammas of Sindh,a pastoral group,and laid a claim on the Rajput identity after marriages with Sodha Rajput women by adopting a process called Rajputisation.
Salim Durani was an Afghan-born Indian cricketer who played in 29 Test matches from 1960 to 1973. An all-rounder,Durani was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and a left-handed batsman famous for his six-hitting prowess. He was the only Indian Test cricketer to have been born in Afghanistan. He was the first cricketer to win an Arjuna Award. In 2011,he was awarded the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award,the highest honour bestowed by the Indian cricket board on a former player.
The Indian cricket team touring England and the British Isles in the summer of 1911 was the first all-Indian team to tour the country. The team was led by the then 19-year old Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh and had representation from the Parsees,Hindus,and the Muslims. The team had limited success winning only two amongst the 23 matches that they played on the tour.
Sir Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja,known to some as the Good Maharaja,was the Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar from 1933 to 1966,succeeding his uncle,the famed cricketer Ranjitsinhji.
Bhausaheb Babasaheb Nimbalkar was an Indian first-class cricketer who is remembered for his innings of 443 not out in the 1948–49 Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Kathiawar. At the time,it was the second-highest score in the history of first-class cricket. It remains the Indian record and is also the highest score by a batsman who never played in Test cricket. Nimbalkar was a right-handed batsman whose career spanned the seasons from 1939/40 to 1963/64. He played for six first-class teams:Baroda,Maharashtra,Holkar,Madhya Bharat,Rajasthan,and Railways. He was an occasional wicket-keeper and a right-arm fast-medium bowler.

Lakhajirajsinhji II was the ruler of the Indian princely state of Rajkot from April 1890 until his death,holding the title Thakore Saheb. He came to the throne at the age of four,following the death of his father and his three older brothers. However,he did not govern in his own right until the age of 21,in 1907. Lakhajirajsinhji became one of the most progressive princely state rulers,introducing some of the first democratic institutions in India. He also fostered a culture of openness and intellectualism that laid the foundation for Rajkot as a centre of the Indian independence movement.
Arvind Shivlal Pujara is a former Indian cricketer who played first-class cricket for Saurashtra from 1976 to 1980. He is the father and coach of the Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.
Major-General Kumar Shri Himmatsinhji Jadeja CIE was the first Deputy defence minister of India and the first Lieutenant-Governor of Himachal Pradesh. A descendant of the rulers of Nawanagar State,he served with the Indian Army,reaching the rank of major-general. He was later a member of the two most recent predecessors of the lower house of the Parliament of India –the Central Legislative Assembly and the Constituent Assembly. He also played several first-class cricket matches and was the nephew of Ranjitsinhji and brother of Duleepsinhji,both of whom played Test cricket for England.
The 1939–40 Ranji Trophy was the sixth season of the Ranji Trophy. Eighteen teams took part in four zones in a knockout format. Northern India who appeared in the previous season dropped out but would return in 1940–41. Maharashtra won their first title defeating United Provinces in the final.
Rajkumar Shri Indravijaysinhji Dilawarsinhji Jadeja was an Indian cricketer. A descendant of the ruling family of Nawanagar State,and a nephew of Ranjitsinhji,who played Test cricket for England,Indravijaysinhji was introduced to cricket at the Rajkumar College,Rajkot where most of his family had been educated. He went on to play Ranji Trophy matches for Western India,Nawanagar,and Saurashtra,captaining Nawanagar. He also appeared for several combined teams against touring international sides,and finished his career with 28 first-class matches and a single first-class century.
Rajkumar Shri Sukhdevsinhji RajendrasinhjiJadeja,known professionally as R. K. Sukhdevsinhji,is an Indian businessman and former cricketer. Sukhdevsinhji played a single first-class match for Baroda during the 1953–54 season,aged 17. His father,General Rajendrasinhji,was descended from the ruling family of Nawanagar State,and many other members of his family played cricket at high levels. Sukhdevsinhji later studied economics at St. Stephen's College,Delhi,and has held a variety of positions with companies in India's oil and gas sector,most notably as chairman of Bharat Petroleum.
Raj Kumar Yadvendrasinhji,a member of the Jamnagar royal family,played first-class cricket in India from 1935 to 1947.
Rajkumar Shri Chatrapalsinhji,later known as R.K. Chatrapalsinh Jadeja,a member of the Jamnagar royal family,played first-class cricket in India from 1957 to 1971.
Abdul Aziz Durrani was an Afghan-born Indian cricket coach and first-class cricketer. He played as a wicket-keeper and batsman for Sind and Nawanagar in the Ranji Trophy. He was the father of India Test cricketer Salim Durani.
