Shilpi Singh is an Indian women's rights activist . [1] [2] [3] She is known for contribution for rights and rehabilitation of Indian women in rural areas, [4] to prevent human trafficking, [5] child marriage in Bihar, India. [6] [7] [8] She is the director of Bhoomika Vihar, [9] [10] a not-for-profit organisation.It was established in 1996 with the objective of empowering the marginalised, particularly women and girls at risk of forced or early marriage, with education and skill development, which would expand their socioeconomic opportunities. Social Work

She rescued around 275 women from trafficking in the Seemanchal region Bihar. [14] and provided support to domestic violence survivors, [15] [16] she acknowledged domestic violence to have a straightforward connection with environment,climate change. [15] [17] [3] [18] [19] Singh participated in advocating for the opening of crisis centers where rescued women could get all assistance in one place that is free from discrimination and has government protection. [20] Through her organization, Bhoomika Vihar, Shilpi signed an MoU with the Canadian Embassy and NSS Bihar to create gender youth speakers to campaign for gender awareness and sensitivity. [21]


Major Initiatives Under Shilpi's leadership:

  1. Anti-Human Trafficking Campaigns: These campaigns focus on creating awareness about human trafficking, educating vulnerable communities, and building networks to support rescue operations. [22]
  2. Rehabilitation/Reintegration Programs:Bhoomika Vihar facilitates immediate aftercare/reintegration services, including counseling, legal aid, and vocational training, to help survivors rebuild their lives. [15] [23]
  3. Education and Empowerment: Recognizing the importance of education, the organization runs educational programs for children and young adults to empower them with knowledge and skills necessary for a better future. Focusing on joyful digital learning and through STEAM module to cope up the learning gap of Urban and Rural students. [24] [25]
  4. Advocacy and Policy Influence: Shilpi Singh actively engages with policymakers and stakeholders to advocate for stronger laws and policies to combat human trafficking and support survivors. [26] [27]

Durga Jattha

To encourage and have participation from local community girls and women, Shilpi initiated forming groups of vulnerable adolescent girls, which is called Durga Jattha. There are 20 girls in a group from the same Panchayat. The girls in the group conduct meetings on regular basis for discussion on vices in the community and they inform to the local government authorities for corrective actions. At present, 50 such groups are active in Araria and Katihar districts of Bihar. [28] [29]

Under this structure of Community Driven and Girl Led Leadership, the group publishes their own handmade newspapers using herbal colours and food grains. The newspaper is shared with Panchayati Raj authorities/ Police and media personnel on regular interval. The group acts against early marriages of girls in rural areas, they also identify and motivate school dropout girls to take part in regular education system. [30] [31] [32] [27]

Awards

She was selected as the women leader for 2022-2023 by American organization Vital Voices and Reliance Foundation. [33] [34] Shilpi was selected as the Secret Superstar by Aamir Khan in his campaign for people who were engaged in social causes but remain unknown to the world. [35] [36] [1] She was selected by Embassy of the United States for International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), in 2015. [24] [26] Bhoomika Vihar, under the leadership of Shilpi Singh, became a finalist in the Education category of the HCL Grant Edition VIII in 2022-23 and was featured in the HCL Foundation's coffee table book, "The Fifth Estate VOL. Shilpi-Gautam murder is the infamous case of death of two individuals, Shilpi Jain and Gautam Singh, which shook the Bihar government of the time. The case was finally closed as double suicide, although many remain unconvinced with the investigation. Shilpi was the daughter of Ujjwal Kumar Jain, a clothes store owner and Gautam was the son of a London based doctor, B.N Singh. He was associated with the youth wing of Rashtriya Janata Dal. The two were believed to be in a relationship.

Jang Bahadur Singh is an Indian Bhojpuri folk singer and wrestler, who was popular during the 1940s to 1970s in Bihar, Jharkhand & Bengal Region. He is an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles. He was born in Kausad village in Siwan district of Bihar on 10 December 1920. He is a singer of 'Vyas Style', a genre of Bhojpuri folk singing. He was a celebrated wrestler in Bihar and Bengal Region. He was given the title of Sher-e-Bihar when he defeated a heavy weight wrestler from Bengal side. He used to inspire the youth to fight for freedom by singing patriotic songs, for which he was also imprisoned by the British. Nowadays, he resides in his paternal village living his remaining years of life in peace.
