Shumy (Ukrainian : Шуми; Russian: Шумы, romanized: Shumi) is a settlement in the administrative area of the city council of Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine, at 57.4 km NNW from the centre of Donetsk city. It is considered a suburb of Horlivka. [2]
The War in Donbas, which started in mid-April 2014, has brought along both civilian and military casualties. [3] [4] Initially, Shumy was under the control of the separatist Donetsk People's Republic, but in the summer of 2018, the Ukrainian army took control of the village. [2] Control of Shumy is considered a military strategic advantage.[ why? ] [2] The village is located on the frontline near separatist-held Horlivka. [2]
During the Prelude to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops fired mortars at Ukrainian positions near the village on 26 March 2021, killing four Ukrainian servicemen. [5] During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine retained control over the settlement until 21 June 2024, when Russia recaptured it. [6] [7] The frontline around the settlement was the last pre-invasion frontline in which there were significant territorial changes, specifically 848 days after 24 February 2022.
As part of a renewed effort to capture Donetsk Oblast, the Russian Armed Forces captured Shumy on 21 June 2024 [8] and advanced into other sattelite settlements of Toretsk in early July, as geolocated footage by DeepState confirmed. [9] [10]

Since 19 September 2022, a military campaign has taken place along a 60-km frontline in western parts of Luhansk Oblast and far-eastern parts of Kharkiv Oblast amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Vostok Brigade or 114th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade is a military unit of Russian Ground Forces. Until January 1, 2023, it was part of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" (DPR). It is attached to the 1st Donetsk Army Corps. The brigade was created and is commanded by Alexander Khodakovsky. According to an interview with The Washington Post, DPR president Denis Pushilin, the battalion was formed by local separatists and has nothing to do with the Chechen unit of the same name.

On 10 May 2024, the Russian Armed Forces began an offensive operation in Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast, shelling and attempting to breach the defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the direction of Vovchansk and Kharkiv. The Guardian reported that the offensive has led to Russia's biggest territorial gains in 18 months. By early June the Russian offensive stalled, with The Guardian reporting that the situation on the frontline had been "stabilized." Ukrainian forces then began a concerted counterattack, which liberated its first settlement on 19 June.

The battle of Toretsk is an ongoing engagement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine between the Russian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for control of the city of Toretsk and the satellite cities east of it of Pivdenne, Zalizne, Druzhba, Pivnichne, and Shumy, and the settlement south of it of Niu-York, beginning on 18 June 2024. The effort to control the city is part of a renewed effort to capture portions of Donetsk Oblast and, according to a Ukrainian military spokesman, an attempt to flank the highly contested city of Chasiv Yar from the south.
