Simon Jeffries (born 11 July 1955) is a British coxswain. He won a gold medal at the 1980 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel with the lightweight men's eight. [1]

In a rowing crew, the coxswain is the member who sits in the stern facing the bow. The coxswain is responsible for steering the boat, and coordinating the power and rhythm of the rowers. In some capacities, the coxswain is responsible for implementing the training regimen or race plan. Most coaches cannot communicate to boat/coxswain, so the coxswain is the "coach" in the boat. A coxswain is necessary in the first place because the rowers sit with their backs to the direction of travel.

The 1980 World Rowing Championships were World Rowing Championships that were held in August 1980 at Hazewinkel in Belgium. Since 1980 was an Olympic year for rowing, the World Championships did not include the 14 Olympic classes scheduled for the 1980 Summer Olympics. Only the four lightweight men's event formed part of the competition, and all finals were raced on 16 August.

The Hazewinkel is a 2,000 m rowing and regatta course belonging to Bloso in Heindonk, municipality of Willebroek, near Mechelen, Belgium. The site consists of a finishing tower, boathouses, a cafeteria and eight basic huts that house athletes using the lake. The course hosted the Great Britain Rowing team's national final trials for some years and, in July 1996 and 2006, the World Rowing Under 23 Championships too. It has also hosted two World Rowing Championships as well as the World Rowing Junior Championships (1997).

The men's coxed eight (M8+) competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics took place at Lake Casitas in Ventura County, California, United States. It was held from 31 July to 5 August. New Zealand had won the last two world championships, and the other strong team, East Germany, was absent from the event due to the Eastern Bloc boycott. This made New Zealand the strong favourite. But the final was won by Canada, with the USA and Australia the other medallists, and New Zealand coming a disappointing fourth.
