The Six Days of Berlin is a six-day track cycling race held annually in Berlin, Germany. The event was first held in 1909. [1] In its first edition, 15 teams of two cyclists each competed in the exhibition hall at Berlin Zoo for glory and, not least, 5000 Goldmarks. [2] Klaus Bugdahl holds the record of victories with nine.

Contents

The time when the 6 day race is held is sometimes just in the middle of the football season, the winter is severe, and football league in Germany had rather long winter break. In the past Bundesliga was suspended from mid December to mid February. Therefore, 6-day races were considered major entertainment events at that time (handball was to some extent).

In particular, the Berlin 6-day race, which has reached the 100th race at the 2011 competition, still has a large audience, and in the heyday it was held twice a season. Due to the race format declines in popularity and Global financial crisis in 2009, Six Days of Dortmund, Stuttgart and Munich folded successively. Another surviving 6 day cycling in Germany is Six Days of Bremen.

Starting from 2017, 6 Days of Berlin was incorporated into the Six Day Series organized by Madison Sports Group in attempting to rejuvenate the race format. [3]

Züri-Metzgete was a European Classic cycle race held annually in Zürich, Switzerland, and continued as a non-professional mass participation event from 2007 until 2014. It was a race with a long history dating back to 1914, on a demanding course in the hilly region around Zürich. In its heyday the race was considered the sixth monument of cycling, alongside the five most prestigious one-day races on the calendar. It was the most prominent of the summer classics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mark Cavendish</span> Road and track cyclist (born 1985)

Sir Mark Simon Cavendish is a retired Manx professional road racing cyclist. As a track cyclist he specialised in the madison, points race, and scratch race disciplines; as a road racer he was a sprinter. He is widely considered one of the greatest road sprinters of all time, and in 2021 was called "the greatest sprinter in the history of the Tour and of cycling" by Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France. He holds the record for most stage wins at the Tour de France (35), achieved across 15 Tours and 17 years (2008-2024).

Since his retirement from road racing, Greipel has worked as a directeur sportif for UCI Continental teams Saris Rouvy Sauerland Team and P&S Benotti, and in 2023, he became the national road coach for the German Cycling Federation. He also competes in masters cycling events for RC Schmitter Köln.

Robert Bartko is a German former road and track cyclist, who competed professionally between 2001 and 2014. Born in the former East Germany, Bartko won two gold medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia: in the individual and in the team pursuit.

Kenny De Ketele is a Belgian former professional racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2007 and 2021, entirely for UCI ProTeam Sport Vlaanderen–Baloise. He won eight medals at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, including a gold medal in the Madison at the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, partnering Gijs Van Hoecke. Following his retirement, De Ketele became a directeur sportif with Sport Vlaanderen–Baloise.

Roger Kluge is a German professional racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Continental team Rad-Net Oßwald. Kluge left NetApp–Endura at the end of the 2013 season, and joined IAM Cycling for the 2014 season. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he won the silver medal in the men's points race.

Morgan Kneisky is a French former track and road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2010 and 2020 for the Team Raleigh–GAC, Armée de Terre, Roubaix–Lille Métropole and Groupama–FDJ Continental Team squads. Kneisky is a four-time UCI Track Cycling World Championships gold medallist, winning golds in the madison in 2013 with Vivien Brisse, 2015 with Bryan Coquard and 2017 with Benjamin Thomas, and the scratch in 2009. He retired following the 2021 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

The Six Day London is a six-day track cycling race held annually in London, United Kingdom. The competition consists of six consecutive evening sessions of track cycling: Madison, Sprint, Elimination, Keirin, Derny and Team Time Trial disciplines. Six day invites the world's elite Men's and Women's riders, as well as sprinters and emerging talent from around the world. The overall winner is the team which takes the most laps.

2016 Six Days of London was a professional track cycling event held at the Lee Valley VeloPark over six consecutive days from 25 to 30 October 2016. It was the second year the event was held since the historical Six Days of London event was resurrected in 2015. Before the event, the organisers announced that the event was to form part of a "Six Day Series", with the London event being followed by events in Amsterdam, Berlin and Copenhagen, with a "final" then being held at the Palma velodrome in Mallorca.

The 2018–19 UCI Track Cycling World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a track cycling season. It was the 27th series of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup organised by the UCI.

The Six Day Series or Six Day Cycling Series is an annual series of track cycling events run by Madison Sports Group featuring world class cyclists. The series, organised for the first time in the 2016–17 season, was formed to develop an elite-level competition series around the globe and combines track cycling with a party atmosphere. The aim was to rejuvenate the once flagging format and provide enticing rewards for cyclists during the road cycling off season.

The 2018–19 Six Day Series (also known as the Six Day Cycling Series is a multi six-day track cycling race tournament over a season. It is the 3rd series organised by the Madison Sports Group. This season consists of 7 events across 5 countries.
