Simon Ammann is a Swiss ski jumper. He is one of the most successful athletes in the history of the sport, having won four individual Winter Olympic gold medals, in 2002 and 2010, and is the only ski jumper to have achieved the gold double–double at the Winter Olympics. His other achievements include winning the 2007 Ski Jumping World Championships, the 2010 Ski Flying World Championships, the 2010 Nordic Tournament, and the 2010 Ski Jumping World Cup overall title.
Jens Weißflog is a German former ski jumper. He is the most successful German ski jumper of all time. Only Finns Matti Nykänen and Janne Ahonen, Pole Adam Małysz and Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer have won more World Cup victories.

He has been described as the greatest ski jumper without an individual Olympic medal.

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 took place 22 February – 4 March 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. It was the second time this city has hosted these championships, having previously done so in the 1972 Winter Olympics. Sapporo was selected as venue by vote at the 43rd FIS World Congress in Portorož, Slovenia, on 6 June 2002. It also marked the third time the championships were hosted outside Europe in a year that did not coincide with the Winter Olympics; it was the first championship held in Asia. The ski jumping team normal hill event was not held, as it had been in 2005.

He won three medals in the team large hill at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with two golds and one bronze (1982). Kokkonen's best individual finish at the world championships was 5th in the large hill at Lahti in 1978.

His other tournament wins include the Raw Air, Willingen Five, and Planica7.
Ildar Rayilevich Fatchullin is a Russian-Tatar former ski jumper who competed from 1999 to 2007. His best individual World Cup finish was eighth in a large hill competition in Oberstdorf on 30 December 2001, and his best individual career finish was fourth in a normal hill Grand Prix competition in Hinterzarten on 7 August 2005.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 was the 40th World Championships in nordic skiing and took place in Lahti, Finland from 22 February to 5 March 2017. This was the seventh time the event has been held there, having previously been held in 1926, 1938, 1958, 1978, 1989 and 2001.
