The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
The 2007 Winter Universiade, the XXIII Winter Universiade, took place in Turin, Italy from January 17 to 27, 2007.
The 1997 Winter Universiade, the XVIII Winter Universiade, took place in Muju and Chonju (Jeonju), South Korea. The snow sport events were held in Muju Resort in Muju, while the ice events were held in Chonju.
Osrblie is a village and municipality in Brezno District, in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia. The village is best known for biathlon races, with Biathlon World Cup events taking place since the mid-1990s and with one Biathlon World Championships in 1997. It also hosted the biathlon event at the 2015 Winter Universiade.
The 2015 Winter Universiade, the XXVII Winter Universiade, was a multi sport winter event held in Granada, Spain and Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia. On 14 March 2009, FISU announced that the host would be Granada because they were the only bid.
Milanko Petrović is a Serbian biathlete who participated at the 2010 Winter Olympics, becoming the first olympic biathlete for independent Serbia. At the 2014 Winter Olympics he carried Serbian flag at the opening ceremony and competed in biathlon and cross-country skiing. He represents Serbia at the Biathlon World Championships and he is a regular participant of the Biathlon World Cup and the first ever Serb to win World Cup points. Occasionally, he competes in cross-country skiing. At the 2013 Winter Universiade he made a remarkable success by winning first ever international medals for Serbia in biathlon and cross-country skiing.

Monika Hojnisz, now Monika Hojnisz-Staręga, is a Polish biathlete. She competes in the Biathlon World Cup. Hojnisz won a bronze medal at the Biathlon World Championships 2013. In December 2018 she scored her best World Cup finish, taking second place in the 15 km individual at the Pokljuka round of the World Cup. She finished sixth in the 15 km individual at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Jitka Landová is a former Czech biathlete, AND a double Winter Universiade winner in the mass start competition. She competed at the Biathlon World Championships 2012 in Ruhpolding and at the Biathlon World Championships 2013 in Nové Město na Moravě. She competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Her best result here was 3rd place in relay, shared with her Czech teammates Eva Puskarčíková, Gabriela Soukalová and Veronika Vítková. Apart from that, she also competed in sprint, pursuit and individual.

Yuliya Zhuravok is a Ukrainian former biathlete. She became junior world champion in 2015, and represented Ukraine twice at the Biathlon World Championships: in 2015 in Kontiolahti and 2019 in Östersund. She also competed at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, where she was 18th in sprint and 8th in pursuit. Her best World Cup finish was 10th in the individual race in Östersund during the 2016–17 season.
Ukraine competed at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain, and Štrbské Pleso/Osrblie, Slovakia. The Ukrainian team consisted of 52 athletes who competed in alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, ski jumping, and snowboarding. The team was not represented in curling, freestyle skiing, and ice hockey. Ukraine won 5 medals and shared 13th rank with Austria.
