So Chan (Su Can),also known by his nickname Beggar So (So Fa-tsz or So Hut-yee),was a Chinese martial artist and folk hero who lived during the late Qing dynasty. One of the Ten Tigers of Canton,he was best known for his drunken boxing.
Born during the late Qing Dynasty,So Chan was from Nanhai District,Foshan,Guangdong,or Hunan according to one source, [1] he was skilled in unarmed Chinese martial arts skills,Drunken Eight Immortals Boxing (醉八仙),Shaolin staff (少林棍棒) said to be taught by the Shaolin monk Chan Fook, [2] and also brutal boxing (殘拳).
He formulated the unusual Golden Bowl and Iron Chopsticks technique (金碗鐵筷),which involved the use of an iron bowl on one hand to provoke the opponent and striking the opponent's acupuncture points with the iron chopsticks on another hand. [3]
He was a wanderer and made a living performing martial arts and acrobatics with his younger sister in the streets of Guangdong. He also taught martial arts at Sancheng Community Training Centre (三聖社設教館) in Guangzhou and would later be known as one of the Ten Tigers of Canton. [4] So exchanged ideas with So Hak-fu (蘇黑虎),a fellow martial artist of the Ten Tigers of Canton,and imparted the technique of Golden Bowl and Iron Chopsticks along with some of his drunken boxing skills to him. He also exchanged ideas with two other Ten Tigers martial artists Leung Kwan and Wong Kei-ying as well.
According to a folklore,So Chan also taught Wong Kei-ying's son Wong Fei-hung in drunken boxing.
It was assumed that So was believed to have died during the early reign of the Guangxu Emperor. [5]
He was first portrayed by Liu Chi-wai in at least six black-and-white Wong Fei-hung films starring Kwan Tak-hing from 1950 to 1961.

A museum dedicated to him was built in his birthplace in Foshan,Guangdong.
Hung Ga Kuen (Cantonese) or Hongjiaquan (Mandarin) - alternatively shortened as either Hung Ga (洪家) or Hung Kuen (洪拳) - is an ancient southern Chinese martial art,which roots lie in the Northern Shaolin kung fu. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow is a 1978 Hong Kong martial arts action comedy film directed by Yuen Woo-ping in his directorial debut. It stars Jackie Chan,Hwang Jang-lee,and Yuen Woo-ping's real life father,Yuen Siu-tien. The film's plot is about Chien Fu,an orphan who is bullied at a kung fu school,meeting an old beggar,Pai Cheng-tien,who becomes his sifu (teacher) and trains him in Snake Kung Fu.
Ten Tigers of Canton or Ten Tigers of Guangdong refers to a group of ten Chinese martial artists from Guangdong Province lived around the 19th century during the Qing dynasty in China. They were said to be the greatest fighters in Guangdong during the Qing era. Much of their existence has been embellished by folk legends and stories passed down from generation to generation.

Dance of the Drunk Mantis is a 1979 Hong Kong kung fu comedy film directed by Yuen Siu-tien's real life son Yuen Woo-ping and written by Ng See-yuen and Lung Hsiao. It stars Yuen Siu-tien,Hwang Jang-lee,Linda Lin,Yuen Shun-yi,Charlie Shek and Yuen Kwai. This was Yuen Siu-tien's final film appearance before his death on 8 January 1979. The film was released theatrically in Hong Kong on 27 June 1979.
Heroes Among Heroes is a 1993 Hong Kong martial arts film produced and directed by Yuen Woo-ping and starring Donnie Yen as the protagonist So Chan,who was one of the Ten Tigers of Canton. The film shows opium smugglers in the Qing Dynasty,China,with Officer Lin Zexu and Chinese martial arts master and folk hero of Cantonese ethnicity Wong Fei-hung fighting against them. It was released in the US as Fist of the Red Dragon.
