Sodastream are an Australian folk rock duo consisting of Karl Smith on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; and Pete Cohen on double bass, bass guitar, piano and backing vocals; which formed in 1996 in Perth. They have toured Australia, United States, Europe and Japan and had national rotation on radio network, Triple J. Sodastream issued four studio albums, Looks Like a Russian (22 May 2000), The Hill for Company (3 September 2001), A Minor Revival (4 August 2003) and Reservations (22 May 2006) before disbanding in 2007. In 2011 the pair were both members of Lee Memorial and in 2013 reformed Sodastream.
Sodastream began in Perth in 1996, [1] [2] as a pop music group consisting of Peter Ronald Cohen on double bass, bass guitar, piano and backing vocals; Adam Johnson on drums and percussion; and Karl Stephen Smith (ex-Thermos Cardy) on lead vocals and acoustic guitar. [3] [4] [5] In 1997 they recorded and released their debut extended play, Enjoy, on Aquamudvuv Records. [6] The seven-track EP was produced by Anthony Frisina and Steve Elkin guested on piano for one track. [6] Johnson left after the EP appeared but Cohen and Smith continued as a folk rock duo – without a regular drummer. Sarah Corbett of Come with a Smile described their work as "poignant words, elegant melodies, wavering voices, melancholy tones and understated instrumentation". [3]
In late 1998 the pair relocated to Melbourne, [1] where they recorded and released their second EP, Practical Footwear. [4] [7] This seven-track EP was co-produced by Jason Brown and Sodastream, drums were supplied by Dave Bower. [7] The band signed with a range of independent labels including Australia's Trifekta Records, United Kingdom's Tugboat Records and United States' Drive-In Records. The US version of Practical Footwear was trimmed back to six tracks, which Allmusic's Mike DaRonco described as "dreary but mature folk-pop anthems" with "[n]othing uplifting or outgoing, but Sodastream's acoustic arrangements are pleasantly relaxing". [8]
During March and April 1999 Sodastream undertook their first tour of Europe including shows in Netherlands and England. [9] [10] In October that year they returned to Netherlands to perform at the Crossing Border Festival. [10] On 22 May 2000 Sodastream released their first album, Looks Like a Russian, on Trifekta with Gavin Tempany, Laurie Sinagra and the group co-producing; drums were supplied by Marty Brown (later in Art of Fighting). [11] Corbett at Oz Music Project's website praised Smith's "captivating vocals ... [d]elicate, hushed and high pitched. Shy, sad and lonely" while Cohen provided a "calming atmosphere with spine-chilling strums from his double bass and haunting backing vocals". [12] They toured Europe again and had their first shows in Australia outside Perth or Melbourne. Their material was broadcast by national radio network, Triple J. [13]
On 3 September 2001 Sodastream released their second album, The Hill for Company, produced again by Sinagra, Tempany and the duo; with drums by Brown. [14] Oz Music Project's Victoria Hannan noted "the aching and longing of a voice can make your heart skip a beat, the way a simple melody intertwined with the melancholy of a throbbing double bass accompaniment can make you swoon". Australian music journalist, Ed Nimmervoll, explained why The Hill for Company was his Album of the Week, "Karl Smith and his intimate vocals and acoustic guitar, and Pete Cohen with his supportive double bass. On record they add gentle colours and guest musicians – viola, trumpet and trombone, even drums – adding sophistication to what sounds so simple and raw, but without breaking the mood, or overshadowing the central all-important atmosphere. Slowly as you listen, entranced by the mood, the songs begin to shine through". [15] The group undertook two more Australian tours and another tour of Europe.
Further European tours followed in both 2002 and 2003 including a live performance on Italian MTV, two national tours of Australia and then the band's first tour of Japan. On 4 August 2003 their third album, A Minor Revival, was issued. [4] [16] It was produced by Cohen and Smith with Brown (also on drums) and James Walker (aka Machine Translations) (also on lead guitar, slide guitar, keyboards and viola). [17] Johnny Loftus of Allmusic found that the band "continues to fall comfortably in line with the indie twee establishment, it's also delivered another strong set of songs, this time around informed with plenty of hope". [18] Liz Giuffre at Oz Music Project professed "[f]eaturing stunning arrangements of guitar, double bass, viola, trumpet and percussion, [the album] is sweet and seductive, a disk that swells and falls subtly under the tide of the pale male vocals". [19]
From mid-March to early May 2004 Sodastream undertook their first US tour, [20] [21] with further tours of Europe (in May) and Australia (in August). In October of the following year they released another EP, Take Me with You When You Go; the seven tracks had been recorded from March to July by Cohen and Smith. [22] Eliza Sarlos at Mess+Noise enthused "at once calming and intriguing, where the interplay between acoustic guitar, double bass and voice is immediately affecting ... they've still got the songs, the killer songs ...[they] have taken more risks, and in terms of expression ... narratives flourish with a development in both structure and music". [23]
On 22 May 2006 they released their fourth studio album, Reservations, with Cohen and Smith producing. [24] [25] Drowned in Sound's Daniel Ross opined that the group had a "disgustingly brilliant knack of being able to make one simultaneously envious of their craft and sickened that they don't do more with it ... although rather obvious in their execution and the buttons they press, [they] can construct images of the poor, broken sod we probably all are anyway and chillingly shove it in your face under a blanket of sweetness". [26] The album was supported by another European tour. In January 2007 the album was one of 25 finalists for the Australian Music Prize. [27]
On 18 February 2007 the band announced their break-up, with their final show at Melbourne's East Brunswick Club on 2 March. [28] An email from the band's website explained "[o]ur reasons are complex and many, but above all, it is out of respect to the music that we make that we have decided not to force a situation that could potentially damage our many happy memories of the journey thus far". [28] According to Smith "we did Reservations and followed it up with a few big tours and then kind of fell in a heap, and that was it". [29]
After disbandment Cohen was a member of the bands, Khancoban and then Luluc. [30] From 2008 Smith fronted Lee Memorial, which issued an album, The Lives of Lee Memorial, in September 2009. [30] [31] It was recorded over the previous year with Tom Lyngcoln (also in The Nation Blue) on guitar, Laura MacFarlane on drums and vocals and Matt Bailey (ex-The Paradise Motel, Small Sips) on bass guitar. Back in 2006, Smith had guested on Small Sips' alternative country music album, The Morning Ripples. [32] In 2011 Cohen rejoined with Smith in Lee Memorial. [29] In January 2013, Sodastream announced their reformation, including performances in March and a proposed album of previously unreleased work and new material. [29] [33]
Light Years is the seventh studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. Mushroom Records released it on 22 September 2000 in Australia; Parlophone released it on 25 September 2000 in the United Kingdom. Following the commercial failure of Impossible Princess (1997), Minogue left Deconstruction Records and took a hiatus from recording music. She signed with Parlophone in June 1999 and decided to return to her pop roots. She worked with various writers and producers, including Steve Anderson, Johnny Douglas, Robbie Williams, Guy Chambers, and Mark Picchiotti.
"Comfortably Numb" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd from their eleventh album, The Wall (1979). It was released as a single in 1980, with "Hey You" as the B-side. The music was composed by guitarist David Gilmour. The lyrics were written by bassist Roger Waters.
The Paradise Motel are an independent Australian rock band that formed in Hobart, Tasmania. In 1994, they relocated to Melbourne and issued two albums on Mushroom Records, Still Life (1996) and Flight Paths (1998). After relocating to the United Kingdom, they released a third, Reworkings (1999), before disbanding in early 2000. The group reformed in January 2008 and released the albums, Australian Ghost Story (2010), I Still Hear Your Voice at Night (2011) and Oh Boy (2013).
Ratcat are an Australian indie rock band from Sydney who formed in 1985. The band is fronted by mainstay vocalist and guitarist, Simon Day. Their combination of indie pop song writing and energetic punk-style guitar rock won them fans from both the indie and skate-punk communities. They found mainstream success with their extended play, Tingles, album Blind Love and the single, "Don't Go Now" (April), which all reached No. 1 on the ARIA Charts during 1991. The band released two subsequent albums that did not match their earlier chart success. Ratcat ceased performing live regularly in the late 1990s; however, they continue to perform sporadically. During their career, much of Ratcat's albums and singles artwork was created by Simon Day.
Laura Sandra MacFarlane is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and audio engineer. Since 1996 she is the founding mainstay of the Australian indie rock band, ninetynine. MacFarlane also performs solo and has been in other bands, including as an early drummer and singer with United States rock group, Sleater-Kinney (1994–96).
Frente! is an Australian folk-pop and indie pop group which originally formed in 1989. The original line-up consisted of Simon Austin on guitar and backing vocals, Angie Hart on lead vocals, Tim O'Connor on bass guitar, and Mark Picton on drums.
Front End Loader are an Australian rock band which formed in December 1991 with founding mainstays, Bowden Campbell on guitar and vocals; Davis Claymore on lead vocals and guitar; Richard Corey on bass guitar; and Peter Kostic on drums. Front End Loader have issued six studio albums, Front End Loader, Let's Ride!, Last of the V8 Interceptors, How Can We Fail When We're So Sincere?, Ritardando and Neutral Evil (2018). At the ARIA Music Awards of 2011 Front End Loader won an award for Ritardando as Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. Kostic has also drummed for fellow Australian groups Regurgitator (1999–present) and The Hard-Ons (2002–2011).
Machine Translations is the performing name of Greg James Walker, an Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist; who is also a producer as J Walker. Walker started out recording all instruments himself in a home studio and later branched out to include a band.
"The Man Who Sold the World" is a song by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. The title track of Bowie's third studio album, it was released in November 1970 in the US and in April 1971 in the UK by Mercury Records. Produced by Tony Visconti, it was recorded at Trident and Advision Studios in London in May 1970, towards the end of the album's sessions; Bowie recorded his vocal on the final day of mixing for the album, reflecting his generally dismissive attitude during the sessions. Musically, it is based around a "circular" guitar riff from Mick Ronson. Its lyrics are cryptic and evocative, being inspired by numerous poems including the 1899 "Antigonish" by William Hughes Mearns. Bowie's vocals are heavily "phased" throughout and have been described as "haunting".
"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" is a song by English rock band the Darkness, released as the third single from their debut studio album, Permission to Land. When released as a single in September 2003, it peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart. The song also charted worldwide, becoming a top-10 hit in Ireland, New Zealand, and Sweden, as well as on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
"Breathe" is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, from her sixth studio album, Impossible Princess (1997). It was released on 16 March 1998 as the third single from the album, and her final one for the Deconstruction Records label. "Breathe" was co-written by Minogue with Ball and Vauk and produced by Dave Ball and Ingo Vauk. Backed by synthesisers and keyboards, it is an electronica track. The lyrics revolve around contemplation and calmness. "Breathe" received mostly positive reviews from music critics, some of whom highlighted the track as an album stand-out and commended the lyrical and vocal delivery.
Hugo Justin Race is an Australian rock musician and record producer who had been based in Europe from 1989 to 2011. He was a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (1983–85), and The Wreckery (1984–89) with Nick Barker and Robin Casinader. As from October 2013 he was simultaneously a member of Hugo Race and the True Spirit, Hugo Race Fatalists, and Dirtmusic. True Spirit have released 12 albums. Race returned to live in Australia in 2011.
Pure is the second studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 13 April 1992 through Earache Records. Though originally labeled only as industrial metal, the album has since been recognised as one of the earliest post-metal releases. Musically, Pure is rhythmically mechanical and features harsh guitars, with protracted songs and an abundance of deliberate repetition. Like much of Godflesh's music, it is regarded as particularly heavy and aggressive, and these elements helped it gain critical acclaim.
"Just" is a song by the English rock band Radiohead, included on their second album, The Bends (1995). It was released as a single on 21 August 1995 and reached number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2007, NME named "Just" 34th on its list of the "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever". In 2008, it was included in Radiohead: The Best Of. The English producer Mark Ronson released a cover version in February 2008 as the fourth single from his album Version.
Art of Fighting are an indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia. They won the ARIA Award for Best Adult Alternative Album in 2001 for their album Wires.
Domenic Desio Mariani is an Australian guitarist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter. Mariani has been a member of several bands since the early 1980s, including The Stems, The Someloves, DM3, Datura4, and instrumental outfits The Majestic Kelp. The Stems is the best-known and most successful of Mariani's projects. Australian musicologist Ian McFarlane described the power pop group as "one of the best live bands on the Australian scene".

The discography of Beth Orton, an English folktronica singer-songwriter, consists of eight studio albums, two compilation albums, three extended plays, twenty singles and thirteen music videos. Orton debuted in 1993 as the singer of the duo Spill, a collaboration with William Orbit. The two released one single, a cover of John Martyn's song "Don't Wanna Know 'Bout Evil".
The Philisteins were a garage punk band formed in Hobart in 1985 as The Cheesemongers with a line-up including; Aydn Hibberd on guitar, vocals and harmonica; and Guy Lucas on guitar, vocals and organ. In 1986 Konrad Park joined on drums and they adopted a new name, The Philisteins. In late 1986 they issued their debut album, Reverberations, and soon after relocated to Adelaide and signed with local label, Greasy Pop Records. In December 1988 they released an eight-track extended play, Bloody Convicts, Ian Wettenhall on bass guitar and Nick Bruer on drums. They followed with a six-track EP, Some Kind of Philisteins, in November 1989, with Bruer replaced by Stewart Tabert. Their full-length album, Lifestyles of the Wretched and Forgettable, appeared in November of the next year on Dog Meat Records and they had moved to Melbourne. In September 1992 they disbanded and Lucas, Tabert and Wettenhall joined ex-GOD member, Sean Greenaway in a new group, The Freeloaders. Hibberd was a founding member of indie rock band, Powder Monkeys. In March 1998 Guy Lucas died of a drug overdose. A compilation album, A Savage Affection: 1986–1992, appeared in December 2007.
The Last Resort is the second EP released by American country music band Midland. The EP includes the singles "Sunrise Tells the Story", "And Then Some", "Take Her Off Your Hands", "Adios Cowboy" and "Two To Two Step". It was released through Big Machine Records, and produced by Dann Huff, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. The EP was expanded into a full album, The Last Resort: Greetings From, which was released in 2022.
