Songs from Ireland is the eighth album by Australian Idol 2006 winner Damien Leith. It was released by Sony Music Australia on CD and digital download in Australia on 13 March 2015. [1] The album debuted at No. 11 in Australia.
In November 2013, Leith released Chapter Seven independently after having released six albums and leaving Sony Music Australia earlier that year. Leith toured with this album throughout Australia in 2014.
In June 2014, Leith launched a one-man show at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, titled The Parting Glass. The show is set in an Irish pub and features Leith's take on Irish music. [2]
Leith said of the show; "It's set in Ireland in a pub and all the music is playing away. There's a father and a son catching up on lost time. I'm the father and the son and the singer in the band. It's demanding but we get a lot of laughs and then we see tears. It's one of those shows where something is gradually revealed and that (the tears) is exactly the response you want." [3]
The Parting Glass received positive reviews and showcased Leith as not only a musician and singer, but as a burgeoning actor. [4]
Leith said; "I went back through all the Irish songs I'd always loved and I made sure that in between each piece of script one of those classic songs, that I'd sung since I was a kid, was featured. It got an incredible review and I decided, there and then, that I wanted to record an album full of those songs; songs with great stories and long histories."
Leith resigned with Sony Music in late 2014. Leith stated he had enjoyed his foray into independent music, but to be re-signed with Sony, "[it] feels great". [5]
Leith recorded the album in Sydney and in Ireland. "I always said if I was going to do an Irish album it had to be in Ireland." Leith told APN "You have to be surrounded by the whole environment to do it properly. And to work with my brothers and sisters again was the perfect way to do it." His sister Aine Coe sings on several tracks, while his younger brother played the drums and his older brother played guitar and photographed the album artwork. [6]
"The main thing for me with this album," explains the singer, "is that I created something that was authentically Irish. It has all the traditional elements: the fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes and bodhran, all of those great sounds that make up traditional Irish music. I've tried to be as real as possible, whilst also being true to my style as well." [7]
Leith released a promotional video for "Galway Bay" featuring Bing Crosby on 11 March. [8]
On 17 March Leith performed "Galway Girl" on Today , [9] and on 19 March he performed "Danny Boy" on The Morning Show . [10] [11]
Alessandra D'Angelo from Renowned for Sound gave the album 3.5 out of 5, saying; "Even though Leith surely has a beautiful and expressive voice, this album doesn't convince me. The sound is too 'clean' to convey the heartfelt and involving strength of classical songs." [12]
Songs from Ireland debuted on the ARIA charts at number 11.

Australian Idol is an Australian singing competition, which began its first season in July 2003 and ended its initial run in November 2009. As part of the Idol franchise, Australian Idol originated from the reality program Pop Idol, which was created by British entertainment executive Simon Fuller. Australian Idol was televised on Network Ten for its first seven series and was broadcast on the Southern Cross Austereo Radio Network between 2005 and 2007. The series returned in 2023 after Seven Network announced they would be picking up the show.
Shannon Noll is an Australian singer-songwriter who first came to prominence as runner-up of the first season of Australian Idol in 2003, which led to him being signed to Sony BMG. He has released five top ten albums, including two number-one multi-platinum sellers. Noll's first ten singles all peaked inside the ARIA top ten, including three that reached number one. He is the only Australian male artist in Australian chart history to have ten consecutive top ten singles. Noll's debut single "What About Me?" was certified 4× platinum and became the highest selling single of 2004 in Australia.

Jessica Hilda Mauboy is an Australian singer, songwriter and actress. Born and raised in Darwin, Northern Territory, she rose to fame in 2006 on the fourth season of Australian Idol, where she was runner-up and subsequently signed a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. After releasing a live album of her Idol performances and briefly being a member of the girl group Young Divas in 2007, Mauboy released her debut studio album, Been Waiting, the following year. It included her first number-one single, "Burn", and became the second highest-selling Australian album of 2009, certified double platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
Damien Leo Leith is an Irish-Australian singer–songwriter. He was the winner of the Network Ten music contest Australian Idol in 2006. Since winning the title, Leith has released nine studio albums, four of which peaked in the top two of the ARIA Charts, including two number ones. He has been awarded seven platinum and one gold certification for albums and singles by ARIA, which equates to sales of just over half a million.

"Night of My Life" is the debut single of 2006 Australian Idol winner Damien Leith. The song was performed by the final two contestants - Leith and Jessica Mauboy - during the penultimate episode of Australian Idol 2006, and both contestants recorded and had their versions pressed by Sony BMG, ready for the winner's version to be released immediately after the competition.

The CD/DVD contains recordings of Mauboy's live performances from her time in the top twelve on Australian Idol. Leith produced the album for seven months and created the album entirely with acoustic songs. He wrote or co-wrote nine of the twelve songs, collaborating with Alex Lloyd and his music director Paul Gray in a few songs. All of his original songs were inspired by his friends and family. Leith included two cover songs in the album, Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" from the album Rumours and the traditional Irish song "Danny Boy". Where We Land received mostly average reviews from critics. "Galway Girl" is a song written by American singer-songwriter Steve Earle and recorded with Irish musician Sharon Shannon; the title was originally "The Galway Girl". It was featured on Earle's 2000 album Transcendental Blues. "The Galway Girl" tells the semi-autobiographical story of the songwriter's reaction to a beautiful black-haired blue-eyed girl he meets in Galway, Ireland. Local references include Salthill and The Long Walk.
