South Western Districts, known as SW Districts or SWD, is a South African first class cricket team based in the Western Cape city of Oudtshoorn, representing approximately the eastern half of Western Cape province. They form part of the Cape Cobras franchise, and play their home games at the Oudtshoorn Recreation Ground.

Playing history

South Western Districts played their inaugural first-class match in the Currie Cup in 1904 at Mossel Bay against Western Province [1] but did not play another first-class match for 102 years.

The South Western Districts Cricket Board was granted associate status by Cricket South Africa in 2004 and the team has taken part in the Provincial Three-Day Challenge and Provincial One-Day Challenge competitions since the 2006-07 season. It was upgraded to full affiliate status in 2013 [2] and as of early December 2020 South Western Districts had played 143 first-class matches for 37 wins, 53 losses and 53 draws [3] and 111 List A matches for 52 wins, 57 losses, one tie and one no-result. The team's coach for the 2019–20 domestic season was the former Griqualand West and Eagles all-rounder Alan Kruger. He succeeded Baakier Abrahams, who coached the team for the previous three seasons. [5]

In April 2021, Cricket South Africa confirmed the following squad ahead of the 2021–22 season. [6]

Robert Frylinck is a South African professional cricketer who played three T20I’s for the South African national cricket team between 2017 and 2018 and currently plays for the Dolphins.

Errin Ewerts is a South African cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler who played for South Western Districts. He was born in Oudtshoorn.

Marcello Nicolin Piedt is a young South African bowler representing the South Western Districts. Piedt was called up to the SA Schools team in 2011 and has represented South Western Districts since the U13 levels. He is also a member of the Warriors Cubs franchise. He took 10–5–6–7 against Western Province on first-class debut in October 2012, and finished with 59 wickets, a record for a South African debut season. He was included in the South Western Districts cricket team squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup.

Victor Eric 'Strand' Kruger is a South African rugby union player, currently playing with Rustenburg-based club side Impala. His regular position is lock.

Abdu Dayyaan Galiem is a South African cricketer who plays for Western Province. Galiem was born in Cape Town, and educated at Rondebosch Boys High School. Playing as an all-rounder, he made his debut for Western Province in September 2015, playing against Easterns in the Africa T20 Cup. In December 2015, Galiem was named in the South African under-19s squad for the 2016 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. He was originally also named in the team for the 2014 World Cup, but was replaced by Bradley Dial prior to the tournament after suffering a knee injury.

The 2016 Africa T20 Cup was the second edition of the Africa T20 Cup, a Twenty20 cricket tournament that was held in South Africa from 2 September to 1 October 2016, as a curtain-raiser to the 2016–17 South African domestic season. Organised by Cricket South Africa, it featured thirteen South African provincial teams, as well as the national sides of Kenya, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Jacques Snyman is a South African cricketer. He made his international debut for the South Africa cricket team in February 2021.

Jean du Plessis is a South African cricketer. He was included in the South Western Districts squad for the 2016 Africa T20 Cup. He made his Twenty20 (T20) debut for South Western Districts against Northern Cape on 16 September 2016. He made his List A debut for South Western Districts in the 2016–17 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on 16 October 2016. He made his first-class debut for South Western Districts on 1 December 2016 in the 2016–17 Sunfoil 3-Day Cup.

Adv. Nkululeko Molale Serame is a South African first-class cricketer. He played in the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. He is an off-spinner in the classic mould and a lower order batsman.

David Guy Bedingham is an English-South African cricketer. He holds United Kingdom ancestry visa and qualified as a local player.

Nandre Burger is a South African cricketer. He made his first-class debut for Gauteng in the 2015–16 Sunfoil 3-Day Cup on 11 February 2016. He made his List A debut for Gauteng in the 2016–17 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on 26 February 2017.

The 2019–20 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup was a first-class cricket competition that took place in South Africa from October 2019 to April 2020. On 16 March 2020, Cricket South Africa suspended all cricket in the country for 60 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On 24 March 2020, Easterns and KwaZulu-Natal were named as the joint-winners of the tournament. KwaZulu-Natal finished top of group B, with Easterns named joint-winners despite not topping their group, but played one match fewer than other teams, with their victory coming via an average points calculation. This was following the recommendations made by Graeme Smith, the acting Director of Cricket.

Jhedli van Briesies is a South African cricketer. He made his first-class debut on 16 January 2020, for South Western Districts in the 2019–20 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup. He made his List A debut on 26 January 2020, for South Western Districts in the 2019–20 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. In April 2021, he was named in South Western Districts' squad, ahead of the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa. He made his Twenty20 debut on 26 September 2021, for South Western Districts in the 2021–22 CSA Provincial T20 Knock-Out tournament.

Alan Kevin Kruger is a South African first-class cricketer and coach.
