Southern Lehigh High School is a four-year public high school located in Center Valley, Pennsylvania in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. It is the only high school in the Southern Lehigh School District.

Contents

As of the 2022-23 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,056 students, according to National Center for Education Statistics data.

The school's mascot is the Spartan, and the school colors are blue and white.

History

Southern Lehigh High School was built in 1955. Prior to its construction, some students in the district attended high school at William Allen High School in Allentown while others attended Coopersburg High School, which closed when Southern Lehigh opened in 1955. [2]

Athletics

Southern Lehigh High School is a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's District XI [3] and most of its sports compete in the Colonial League. Southern Lehigh High School is one of eleven Lehigh Valley-area high schools with an ice hockey team; it competes in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Ice Hockey League. [4] In 2022, the team made school history by winning their first ever LVSHL District Championship.

Student organizations and clubs

FIRST Robotics team

Southern Lehigh High School's FIRST Robotics Competition team, the Spartechs, [5] has participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2002. [6] The robotics team has competed at the FIRST Championship in 2016 and 2017. [7]

Speech and debate team

Southern Lehigh's speech and debate team was established by David Long, a physics teacher, in 1992 and has competed at multiple national and state tournaments. [8] It has recorded five PHSSL state champions. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] The team competes in the Pennsylvania High School Speech League, the National Catholic Forensic League, and the National Speech and Debate Association competitions. [14]

Teams from 150 high schools competed as varsity ice hockey teams in Western and Eastern Pennsylvania. Unlike many other high school sport in Pennsylvania, hockey is not run under Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association umbrella. However, Pennsylvania's high school ice hockey is sanctioned by USA Hockey and varsity-level programs are marginally overseen by the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers organizations through the Penguins Cup and the Flyers Cup. However although it is considered a club it is still a part of the High School as a sport and is affiliated with the school. Some high schools with lower hockey participation may combine with other schools to have sufficient rosters. Most schools with a varsity ice hockey team also field a junior varsity team as well

Louis E. Dieruff High School, typically referred to as Dieruff High School, is a large, urban public high school in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is located at 815 North Irving Street in Allentown.
