The Southland College Preparatory Charter High School (SCPHS; also known as Southland College Prep, Southland College Prep High School, or simply Southland) is a College Preparatory Charter High School in Richton Park, Illinois. The school serves the communities of Richton Park, Country Club Hills, Matteson, Olympia Fields, and Park Forest. [1] [2] [3]

History

Southland College Preparatory Charter High School was formed in 2010 by Dr. Blondean Y. Davis as an alternative for students of Rich Township High School District 227. Beginning with fewer than 125 students, the school has its origins in O.W. Huth Middle School. By April, 2011 the freshman inaugural class had moved into the newly renovated school and district office. Previously a Prudential Insurance calling center, the purchase and renovation of the building totaled more than $10 million. [4] Despite several attempts by District 227 officials to close the charter school and appeals made to the Illinois Court of Appeals, the charter school has remained open. [5]

Student Programs

Southland College Prep competes in Illinois High School Association (IHSA) competitions. [6] The school has a Speech team, which has placed at state finals, and a Dramatic Duet Acting championship in 2013. [7] The speech team also went on to place first at the IHSA state tournament in 2017 and 2018. The Southland band program has amassed four IHSA Division I Superior Performance titles. [8] In 2014, Southland was in the IHSA Individual Boys Bowling Final competition. [9] In 2017, the Speech team won state in Group Interpretation for their performance of the movie Hidden Figures. [10]

Tim Barnes (2016 Graduate), was the Rookie of the Year in the ABA Semi Professional Basketball League for the Windy City Groove. [11]

Urban Prep Academies is a nonprofit organization that operated three free open-enrollment public all-male college-preparatory high schools in Chicago. Founded in 2002, and receiving its first charter approval from Chicago Public Schools in 2005, it operates the first all-male public charter high school in the United States. The network opened a second campus in 2009 and a third in August 2010. From 2010 to 2019, 100% of the seniors in the school's graduating classes were admitted to four-year colleges or universities. In 2023 its charter was revoked over misconduct allegations and Chicago Public Schools moved to take over its campuses. The decision is controversial and is being contested in court.

Matteson School District 162 is a suburban school district in Illinois, based in Richton Park. The district enrolls nearly 2,400 students, serving portions of Matteson, Richton Park, Olympia Fields, Park Forest and a small section of University Park. As of 2017 it has 2,100 students.

Rich Township High School is a public high school headquartered in the south suburbs of Chicago in Matteson, Illinois. The district enrolls nearly 2,500 students from all or portions of Chicago Heights, Country Club Hills, Olympia Fields, Matteson, Richton Park, Park Forest, Tinley Park, and University Park. The district operates two campuses, a Fine Arts and Communications Campus in Richton Park, and a STEM Campus in Olympia Fields.
