The city has a variety of sporting teams. The major association football team is FC Astana of the Kazakhstan Premier League. Founded in 2009, Astana won one Kazakhstan Premier League title, two Kazakhstan Cups and one Kazakhstan Super Cup. [1] Their home ground is the Astana Arena, which is also serves as a home for the Kazakhstan national football team. The FC Astana-1964 is based in the Kazhimukan Munaitpasov Stadium and plays in the Kazakhstan First Division, the second tier of football in Kazakhstan. The club's most successful years were 2000s, when they won Kazakhstan Premier League for 3 times. The FC Bayterek is also plays in the Kazakhstan First Division. They were founded in 2012, to develop youth football. [2]

Ice hockey

Astana is home for several professional ice hockey teams. The Barys Astana, a founding member of the Kontinental Hockey League in 2008. [3] The Nomad Astana and the HC Astana are play in the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship. The Snezhnye Barsy of the Junior Hockey League is a junior team of the Barys Astana. [4] All of the teams are based in the Kazakhstan Sports Palace. Astana annually hosts the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan's Cup ice hockey tournament. [5] The Barys Arena is an ice hockey venue under construction will be home arena for Barys Astana. [6]

The Astana Pro Team of the UCI World Tour, founded in 2006 to develop the brand "Astana" in the international sporting arena. [7] The team is one of the most successful teams of recent years, winning several grand tours. The BC Astana of the VTB United League and the National Basketball League is the only basketball team in Astana. [8] They are most crowned basketball team in Kazakhstan with 3 National Basketball League titles and 4 National Basketball Cups. [8] Their home arena is the Saryarka Velodrome, which is mainly used for track cycling events. [8] The Saryarka Velodrome hosted the UCI Track Cycling World Cup stage in 2011. [9] The Astana Arlans are an amateur boxing team competing in the World Series of Boxing. [10] Arlans became champions in the third edition of WSB in 2013. [10] The Astana Presidential Sports Club was founded in 2012, to combine the main sports teams in Astana. [11] The organization supported by Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna. [12] The 2011 Asian Winter Games were partly held in the capital. The Alau Ice Palace is annually hosts the ISU Speed Skating World Cup. [13] The President's Cup tennis tournament annually held at the National Tennis Center Daulet. [14] In 2014, Astana will open the National Paralympics Training Center for paralympic athletes in Kazakhstan. [15] Although bandy is the only team sport in which Kazakhstan has brought home World Championship medals, it has just started to be played again in Astana. The city has organised both national championships for youth in rink bandy [16] and in regular bandy for adults. After having been based in both Almaty and Oral, the seat of Kazakhstan Bandy Federation is now the in capital.

Astana Arena is the largest stadium in the country and it was built from 2006 to 2009 at a cost of $185 million, and was officially opened on 3 July 2009. It is also a home ground for FC Astana of the Kazakhstan Premier League and FC Bayterek of the Kazakhstan First Division. The stadium hosted the opening ceremony of the 7th Asian Winter Games on 31 January 2011. Astana Arena was one of the venues to bid to host UEFA Euro 2020 matches.

Hockey Club Barys, also referred to as Barys Astana or HC Barys, is a professional ice hockey team based in Astana, Kazakhstan. It is one of the founding members of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). They play in the league's Chernyshev Division of the Eastern Conference. Their home arena is the Barys Arena, where they have played since the 2015–16 KHL season. Prior to 2015, the team played home games at the Kazakhstan Sports Palace for 14 seasons, beginning in 2001. The head coach is Andrei Skabelka and the president is Boris Ivanishchev. The team serves as a base club for the Kazakhstan national ice hockey team.

The Kazakhstan Sports Palace is a palace of sports in Astana, Kazakhstan. It is the home of Nomad Nur-Sultan and HC Astana of the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship, and Snezhnye Barsy junior hockey team of the Junior Hockey League. It seats 4,070 spectators for ice hockey.

The 2013–14 Barys Astana season was the Kontinental Hockey League franchise's 6th season of play and 15th season overall. Barys posted a regular season record of 26 wins, 18 losses, 6 overtime/shootout wins and 4 overtime/shootout losses for 94 points. As a result, Barys won Chernyshev Division and finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference. The team qualified to playoffs a ten games before the end of the regular season on January 16, 2014. Barys ended the 2013–14 regular season as the Eastern Conference's second seed. In the first round of the 2014 Gagarin Cup playoffs, Barys defeated Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg 4-0 in series. Barys lost to Salavat Yulaev Ufa in semifinals 2-4 in series.

Daniyar Zhandosuly Kairov is a Kazakh professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Barys Astana in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

The 'Astana' Presidential Club is a multi-sports club established under the initiative of Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2012. The main aim of the Club is to support and develop professional sports and sports of high achievement in Kazakhstan and promote the image of Astana and Kazakhstan in general, on the international arena.

The 2014–15 Barys Astana season is the Kontinental Hockey League franchise's 7th season of play and 16th season overall.

Almaty Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Almaty, Kazakhstan which was opened on 18 September 2016 and seats 12,000 spectators for ice hockey. Apart from hosting ice hockey matches, the arena is venue for boxing, figure skating, basketball, concerts, and other events. It is one of the venues to host the 2017 Winter Universiade. The arena is located in the north of punched Ryskulov Avenue, to the west from Momyshuly street in the Alatau District.

Nikita Yurevich Mikhailis is a Kazakhstani professional ice hockey forward who is currently playing for Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Mikhailis began playing professionally at the age of 16 with the Nomad Astana of the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship. He played one season with Nomad, during which time he was selected 121st overall by the Barys in the 2012 KHL Junior Draft. In 2012, he began playing major junior hockey with the Barys' junior league affiliate Snezhnye Barsy of the Junior Hockey League (MHL) for three seasons. In 2014–15, he began playing for Barys and register 4 points in the regular season.

The Kazakhstan Basketball Cup is the national men's professional basketball cup competition in the country of Kazakhstan. It is organised annually over a few days in a single location by the National Basketball Federation Kazakhstan. Its official designation in full is: Basketball Cup of the Republic of Kazakhstan for men's teams Кубка Республика Казахстан по баскетболу среди мужских команд).
