The Sri Lankan Armed Forces have established numerous academies and staff colleges across Sri Lanka for the purpose of training professional soldiers in military sciences, warfare command and strategy, and associated technologies.

Ministry of Defense

Several education and military establishments come under the direct preview of the Ministry of Defence and admit members of the armed forces, police and civilians.

Kotelawala Defence University : The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) (Sinhala: ජෙනරාල් සර් ජෝන් කොතලාවල ආරක්ෂක විශ්ව විද්‍යාලය), Ratmalana was founded in 1981 as the Kotelawala Defence Academy to conduct bachelor's degree programs for military cadets from all three services. It has since expanded to include post graduate studies and admits both armed forces personal and civilians.

National Defence College : The National Defence College, Colombo (NDC), established in 2020 is the highest level of strategic training for senior officers of the armed forces, police and civil servants.

Defence Services Command and Staff College : The Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) (Sinhala: ආරක්ෂක සේවා අණ හා මාණ්ඩලික විද්‍යාලMakola , established on 1 January 1997 as the Sri Lanka Army Command and Staff College serves as the principle staff college for the armed forces.

Language Training School: The Language Training School, Kotmale is the principle school of Languages for the armed forces.

Defence Services School : The Defence Services School, Colombo was established on 17 of January 2007 as a national school for the children of armed forces and police personnel.

  1. Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA)(Sinhala : ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද්ධ හමුදා විද්‍යාපීඨය) [1] - The Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa provides initial training for all regular army officers.
  2. Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC)(Sinhala : නිලධාරි ප්‍රගමන ප්‍රවර්ධන මධ්‍යස්ථානය) [2] - The Officer Career Development Centre provides mid-career training officers.
  3. Army School of Logistics (ASL)(Sinhala : යුද්ධ හමුදා භට කාර්ය සම්පාදන විද්‍යාලය) [3] - The Army School of Logistics provides mid-career training for logistics officers.

The Sri Lanka Air Force Regiment is a specialized ground combat corps within the Sri Lanka Air Force, responsible for capturing and defending airfields and associated installations. Its members are the SLAF Regiment Officers and the airmen of operations ground specialization. The SLAF Regiment is fully capable of protecting all its air bases, installations by itself using infantry and light armored units as well as launch air assaults with Airborne Infantry elements (paratroopers). Ground-based air defense of vital military and civil installations around the country is carried out by the SLAF Regiment along with combat search and rescue missions (CSAR). The corps itself is simply known as the 'regiment'.

The Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (SLAMC) (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද හමුදා වෛද්‍ය බලකාය Shri Lanka Yuddha Hamuda Vayidya Balakaya) is a specialist corps in the Sri Lanka Army which specializes in military medicine and provides medical services to all army personnel and their families in war and in peace. It is made up of 4 regular units and one volunteer unit. Headquartered in Colombo, formally at army headquarters. The corps Cap badge depicting the Rod of Asclepius. General officers and senior officers of the SLMC wear gorget patches of maroon rather than of scarlet worn by other officers of similar rank.

The Sri Lanka Military Academy, commonly known simply as Diyatalawa, is the oldest military academy in Sri Lanka, and trains commissioned officers for the Sri Lanka Army. It is located in the garrison town of Diyatalawa in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It has capacity to train more than 300 cadets.

The Air Force Academy (AFA) is the Sri Lanka Air Force's training and education academy which provides initial training to all SLAF personnel who are preparing to be commissioned officers. AFA also provides initial training to Officer Cadets of the general duties pilot branch. The Air Force Academy is based at SLAF China Bay in Trincomalee. The Commandant of the academy is an officer of the rank of Air Commodore.

The Sri Lanka Armed Forces is the overall unified military of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka encompassing the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Navy, and the Sri Lanka Air Force; they are governed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The Army Training School (ATS) is a unit of the Sri Lanka Army responsible for recruit training and unit training for infantry battalion. It is based in Maduruoya it was established in 1985 at the Panagoda Cantonment by the Sri Lanka Light Infantry as the Recruit Training School under the command of Major A. K. Jayawardana SLLI.

Major General Sumith Balasuriya, VSV, USP is a retired Sri Lankan army general, who was the former Commandant of the Volunteer Force; Vice Chancellor, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and GOC, 23 Division.

Sri Lanka Air Force Junior Command & Staff College is the Sri Lanka Air Force academic establishment providing training and education primarily to the mid-career officers of SLAF as well as to limited number of officers from Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Army and officers of various Allied forces. It is located at SLAF China Bay in Trincomalee and administrated by the Sri Lanka Air Force Academy.

Sri Lanka Marine Corps was formed in 2016 under the assistance of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit of the United States Marine Corps in November 2016 and received further training from the Commando Regiment of Sri Lanka Army.

Major General Galwaduge Janaka Laksiri Waduge, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, ndu is a retired Sri Lankan army general. He was the 10th Commander Security Forces Headquarters – Central and the former Colonel commandant of Military Intelligence Corps. He retired from active service in 2020 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 55 for Sri Lankan Armed Forces Personnel.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha Unit</span> Welfare branch of the Sri Lanka Army

Inaugurated on 12 July 1984, the Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha Unit functions with the main objective of providing welfare facilities to the family and relatives of service personnel who died, went missing in action or were injured whilst serving in the army in addition to empowering the families of the serving army personnel. Traditionally the organisation functions under the leadership of the wife of the serving Commander of the Army, and the members are the spouses of army officers as well as female officers. The organisation extends to 22 regimental branches functioning under the patronage of the wives of the respective regimental commanders.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vikum Liyanage</span> Sri Lankan general

Lieutenant General H.L.V.M. Liyanage, widely known as Vikum Liyanage, is a Sri Lanka Army General. He is the current Commander of the Sri Lanka Army serving from 1 June 2022. Prior to become the army commander, he was the 59th Chief of Staff of the Army. On 1 June 2022, Liyanage assumed as the 24th Commander of Sri Lanka Army. Earlier, he served as the Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force as a Major General.

Air Marshal R. A. Udeni P. Rajapaksa RSP & two Bars, VSV, USP is a senior Sri Lanka Air Force officer and pilot currently serving as Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force since June 2023. Previously, he served as Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Director Air Operations, Base Commander SLAF Katunayake and Commandant of the Air Force Academy China Bay.
