The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket franchise based in Saint Kitts and Nevis, and participated in the competition for the first time in 2015. The team will play its home games at Warner Park, Basseterre, located on Saint Kitts, and, like the league's other franchises, draw the majority of its players from West Indian domestic teams.

The Caribbean Premier League is an annual Twenty20 cricket tournament held in the Caribbean. It was created in 2013 and replaced the Caribbean Twenty20 as the premier Twenty20 competition in the Caribbean. It is currently sponsored by Hero MotoCorp and consequently officially named the Hero CPL. The inaugural tournament was won by the Jamaica Tallawahs who defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final.

Cricket Team sport played with bats and balls

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each player. Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information.

Saint Kitts and Nevis country in Central America and Caribbean

Saint Kitts and Nevis, also known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, is an island country in the West Indies. Located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles, it is the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, in both area and population. The country is a Commonwealth realm, with Elizabeth II as queen and head of state.

The league's first expansion team, the new franchise was announced on 27 January 2015, supported by the Saint Kitts and Nevis government, as well as the local business community. [1] During the 2014 CPL tournament, Warner Park hosted nine matches, played over 10 days in August and accompanied by several carnivals and other entertainments. The venue hosted the final six group-stage matches, and then the finals series, comprising two semi-finals and the final between the Barbados Tridents and the Guyana Amazon Warriors. [2]

An expansion team is a new team in a sports league, usually from a city that has not hosted a team in that league before, formed with the intention of satisfying the demand for a local team from a population in a new area. Sporting leagues also hope that the expansion of their competition will grow the popularity of the sport generally. The term is most commonly used in reference to the North American major professional sports leagues but is applied to sports leagues in other countries with a closed franchise system of league membership. The term comes from the expansion of the sport into new areas. That sometimes results in the payment of an expansion fee to the league by the new team and an expansion draft to populate the new roster.

The 2014 Caribbean Premier League season was the second season of the Caribbean Premier League, established by the West Indies Cricket Board. It began on 11 July and ended 16 August.

Barbados Tridents

The Barbados Tridents are the representative cricket team of Barbados in the Caribbean Premier League. It was one of the six teams created in 2013 for the inaugural season of the tournament. Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg has an equity interest in the team since 2013 after he was introduced to the game by his friend Ajmal Khan, the club’s chairman and CPL architect. The Tridents won the 2014 CPL and qualified for the champions league. They were out of the tournament in the group stage managing to win only one of their four matches.

The Saint Kitts and Nevis franchise effectively replaces the Antigua Hawksbills franchise (based in Antigua and Barbuda), although it is intended that the Hawksbills franchise will be revived at a later date, with the CPL consequently featuring seven teams rather than six. [3] The Hawksbills were primarily removed from the competition in order to make scheduling easier, though their poor results and lack of a private owner also contributing to their removal. [4] Saint Kitts and Nevis nominated four previous Hawksbills players – Justin Athanaze, Carlos Brathwaite, Orlando Peters, and Devon Thomas – as their "retained players" prior to the 2015 CPL Draft. [5] South African Eric Simons, formerly senior coach of the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was confirmed as the franchise's inaugural coach in early February 2015. [6]

Antigua Hawksbills

The Antigua Hawksbills was a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise based in Antigua and Barbuda, that played its home games at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Saint Peter Parish, Antigua. The name 'Hawksbills' comes after the sea turtle that populates around the Caribbean Sea and is critically endangered according to the World Conservation Union.

Antigua and Barbuda Country in the Caribbean

Antigua and Barbuda is a country in the West Indies in the Americas, lying between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of two major islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and a number of smaller islands. The permanent population numbers about 81,800 and the capital and largest port and city is St. John's on Antigua. Lying near each other, Antigua and Barbuda are in the middle of the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles, roughly at 17°N of the equator.

Justin Jason Athanaze is a cricketer who has played for the Leeward Islands cricket team in West Indian domestic competitions. As of December 2018, he has played 25 first-class, 36 List A and 21 T20 cricket matches, having made making his debut in January 2007.
