Star Wars: The Black Series (TBS) is a Star Wars toy line produced by Hasbro. It includes action figures, vehicles, Force FX lightsabers, and collectable items.
The action figures are based on characters from the movies, shows, books, comics, and video games from both the Expanded Universe and canon.
Star Wars TBS was first announced by Hasbro in January 2013 in an article in USA Today written by Brian Truitt. [1] [ dubious ] Although this was not Hasbro's first foray into collectible 6" action figures (with the sculpt and articulation of the line inspired by the company's own Marvel Legends series) it is the most recent. The line of toys was released in response to the hype around the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens .
The first wave of 6-inch figures was released on August 1, 2013 and included four characters: Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot), Darth Maul, R2-D2, and a Sandtrooper (Squad Leader).

This series features redesigned packaging with red design details. Numbering was restarted to focus around the releases of new films in the sequel trilogy and standalone Anthology series. As of September 2017, the figures have been released in twelve waves with more planned. [2] [3] [4]

At San Diego Comic-Con 2018, Hasbro revealed a new 6-inch line-up of Star Wars figures for fans who missed out on the original release of the figures called the Archive line. These figures have updated face print and have a grey packaging design. [6]
This distinctive collection is inspired by the end credit images from THE MANDALORIAN including a special Galactic Credit accessory. Figures are repackaged from their original release but are sold on traditional bubble style packaging nostalgic of the original Kenner line. [7] The first figure was released in Q3 of 2020.

These figures are for larger than average height characters and come in a larger box with a different numbering system than the regular line and more accessories.
A series of dioramas designed to display 6" action figures. Each diorama comes with a stationary statue in scale with the other figures in the Black Series, as well as lights and electronics.
Hasbro has partnered with many companies to provide exclusive 6" TBS figures to collectors. Hasbro has also released a number of exclusive figures only available at events like San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) and Star Wars Celebration.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of Star Wars: A New Hope , Hasbro announced the 6-inch Black Series Legacy Editions at the New York City Toy Fair in February 2017. First released in 2017, the series mirrored the original Kenner toy releases, including throwback packaging with cardboard backing and a plastic bubble containing the figure. [8] The series reissued previous figures in the Black Series rather than updated models.
The Legacy Pack includes a display stand for 12 figures with a reversible cardboard backdrop. It is an homage to the "Early Bird Kit" pre-order for Star Wars figures by Kenner in 1977. Production was not going to meet the holiday season, so the pre-order promotion offered a certificate that could be sent in to claim 4 of the 12 initial figures of the toy line when they became available: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2), and Chewbacca. The kit included a cardboard backdrop, sticker sheet, club membership card, and the certificate. [9] Figures were shipped beginning in February 1978.

The 3-3/4-inch scale figures were released in conjunction with the 6-inch figures. However, on September 4, 2015 Wal-Mart was announced as the exclusive provider for the 3-3/4-inch scale action figures. The first wave of Wal-Mart exclusive action figures was available in stores beginning October 2015, with pre-orders available for upcoming releases available that same month. There are still a limited amount of exclusives that are available outside of the U.S. based retailer. [10]
The movie quality lightsaber toys have gone through many changes over the years. They were originally released as FX-Lightsabers by the company Master Replicas, however, the product line was taken over by Hasbro in 2008 where the name changed to Signature FX-Lightsaber. The name was changed a final time when they were released under The Black Series to Force FX Lightsabers. They are high quality reproductions that light up and create sound effects when powered-on, powered-off, and when they impact objects. [11]
An action figure is a poseable character model figure made most commonly of plastic, and often based upon characters from a film, comic book, military, video game or television program; fictional or historical. These figures are usually marketed toward boys and adult collectors. The term was coined by Hasbro in 1964 to market G.I. Joe to boys.
The Mego Corporation was an American toy company that in its original iteration was first founded in 1954. Originally known as a purveyor of dime store toys, in 1971 the company shifted direction and became famous for producing licensed dolls, celebrity dolls, and the Micronauts toy line. For a time in the 1970s, their line of 8-inch-scale action figures with interchangeable bodies became the industry standard.
Kenner Products, known simply as Kenner, was an American toy company founded in 1946. Throughout its history, the Kenner brand produced several highly recognizable toys and merchandise lines including action figures like the original series of Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Batman as well as die cast models. The company was closed by its corporate parent Hasbro in 2000.
Action Man is an action figure launched in Britain in 1966 by Palitoy as a licensed copy of Hasbro's American "movable fighting man", G.I. Joe.
Action Force is a brand of European action figures released in the 1980s that was based on the Action Man toyline. It was also used to introduce G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toys to European markets. Several publishing companies have produced comic books based on the figures.
Marvel Legends is an action figure line based on the characters of Marvel Comics, initially produced by Toy Biz, then by Hasbro. This line is in the 6-inch (150 mm) scale, with spin-off lines in the 4-inch (100 mm), 8-inch (200 mm), and 12-inch (300 mm) scale.
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is a military-themed line of action figures and toys in Hasbro's G.I. Joe franchise. The toyline lasted from 1982 to 1994, producing well over 500 figures and 250 vehicles and playsets. The line reappeared in 1997 and has continued in one form or another to the present day. It was supported by two animated series as well as a major comic series published by Marvel Comics.
The Super Powers Collection was a line of action figures based on DC Comics superheroes and supervillains that was created by Kenner Products in the 1980s.

The Hasbro G.I. Joe Hall of Fame era of 12" action figures began in 1991, when Hasbro released the Target Exclusive Duke in response to the high demand from nostalgic collectors of the vintage era G.I. Joe action figures. Duke was the first 12" (30 cm) action figure produced in the Hasbro G.I. Joe line since 1978. During the G.I. Joe Hall of Fame era, Hasbro introduced several new products to the world of action figure collectibles. The first innovation was the limited edition, individually numbered collectible figures. These figures had collectors scrambling to find the lowest numbers which were expected to have the highest resale value. Hasbro also used variant sets to increase demand and interest in the figures. Additionally, talking voice chips were used in some figures; and limited edition action figure sets were released for the Street Fighter II video game and movie characters, and also for the Mortal Kombat characters.
G.I. Joe: Classic Collection is an action-figure-and-accessories set produced by Hasbro US in a style initially influenced by the Hasbro G.I. Joe products of the 1960s. The set was first released in 1996.
Kenner Star Wars action figures are a line of over 100 unique toys, produced and sold from 1978 to 1985, among a total of more than 300 million Star Wars action figures sold then.
G.I. Joe vs. Cobra is the G.I. Joe toy line series that ran from 2002 to 2005. The toy line was produced by Hasbro.
Marvel Super Hero Squad is an action figure line marketed by Hasbro beginning in 2007. The line features 2-inch (51 mm) scale replicas of comic book heroes from the Marvel Comics universe. Each figure is portrayed in a cartoonish super-deformed style. The line was designed for younger collectors, but has become a hit with fans of all ages despite the "for ages 3 and up" category status. Marketed initially as four two-packs per wave, Super Hero Squad has branched out to include larger multi-packs, vehicles, and mega-packs containing larger characters in scale with the 2-inch (51 mm) line.
Mighty Muggs are a vinyl–plastic collectible toy series made by Hasbro. The toys resemble super deformed versions of characters from the following franchises: Star Wars, Marvel Comics, Indiana Jones, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. There is a line of smaller figures, called Mini Muggs, as well as blank Mighty Muggs for customization. The line was commercially dormant for a few years, but certain retailers received exclusive 'continuation' lines. Comic-Con International 2011 had an exclusive Avengers line.
Marvel Universe is a 33⁄4" action figure line manufactured by Hasbro, featuring characters from the Marvel Comics universe. It first hit stores in early 2009 and features detailed sculpting, multiple points of articulation, and accessories. The line was created by Hasbro Designer Dave Vonner.
G.I. Joe is an American media franchise and a line of action figures owned and produced by the toy company Hasbro. The initial product offering represented four of the branches of the U.S. armed forces with the Action Soldier, Action Sailor, Action Pilot, Action Marine and later on, the Action Nurse. The name is derived from the usage of "G.I. Joe" for the generic U.S. soldier, itself derived from the more general term "G.I.". The development of G.I. Joe led to the coining of the term "action figure". G.I. Joe's appeal to children has made it an American icon among toys.
Star Wars: The Vintage Collection is a Star Wars basic action figures toy line produced by the Hasbro company, and released under their "Kenner" brand. The line features modern 'super-articulated' figures in product packaging nearly identical to that of the original Kenner toy series marketed from 1978 until 1984. The Vintage Collection started in the summer of 2010 and continued with new releases throughout 2012. It was preceded by limited 'vintage' style figure issues that were part of The Original Trilogy Collection (2004) and The Saga Collection (2006) lines.
