Steel Eel is a steel roller coaster located at SeaWorld San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. Manufactured and designed by D. H. Morgan Manufacturing, the roller coaster opened on March 6, 1999, and was the single-biggest investment by the park at the time. The construction of Steel Eel was facilitated by rising guest interest in more attractions following the opening of a steel inverted roller coaster, The Great White.
Steel Eel reaches a maximum height of 150 feet (46 m), with a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour (105 km/h), and a total length of 3,700 feet (1,100 m). The roller coaster was the second to open at the park, mainly focusing on air time. Upon opening, the roller coaster received generally positive reviews from critics and guests, and received several awards.
After building The Great White, a steel inverted roller coaster that opened in 1997, SeaWorld officials saw a great amount of optimistic feedback from guests, leading to the development of the Steel Eel. [1] [2] The roller coaster was designed with the park's layout in mind and would interact with several of the park's existing attractions. Steel Eel's design focused on height and speed. [1] Park officials had sought to increase the frequency of visitors with the opening of the roller coaster. [3] The addition of the Steel Eel also sought to appeal to a wider-family demographic. [1] SeaWorld San Antonio announced on August 18, 1998, that it would add a new steel roller coaster, named Steel Eel. The roller coaster was touted as a "hypercoaster", with a planned opening date set for March 1999. [3]
The construction of Steel Eel was one of the many roller coasters announced by theme parks around the United States in a record high trend. [4] [5] Steel Eel was the most expensive single-season investment the park had made in a 10 year period. [6] Testing rehearsals were finishing up in early March 1999. [7] The roller coaster would open with the park on March 6. [8] [9]
The train departs the station making a left U-turn and ascends the 150-foot (46 m) chain lift hill. Cresting the top, the train descends the first 150-foot (46 m) drop reaching its maximum speed of 65 miles per hour (105 km/h). At the bottom of the drop, the train curves slightly to the left, ascending two camelback hills before entering the mid-course brake run. Exiting the brake run, the train descends a 130-foot (40 m) drop at a right banked 44-degree curve before ascending another hill. After dropping and turning slightly to the left, the train enters a series of four camelback hills. The train then traverses an s-curve into the final brake run before returning to the station. Steel Eel is a steel roller coaster designed and manufactured by D. H. Morgan Manufacturing. [6] [10] [11] The general contractor of the roller coaster was Browning Construction. [10] The second roller coaster to open at the park, [12] Steel Eel was built in the southeast portion of the park near The Great White and three children's attractions. [1] [6] Steel Eel was one of five roller coasters to open at Texas theme parks in 1999. [5] To differ from the park's other steel roller coaster, The Great White, Steel Eel was designed to feature many points of air time. [1] [3] Steel Eel was the first roller coaster built by D. H. Morgan Manufacturing to utilize tubular steel supports as opposed to the manufacturer's earlier use in steel grid frameworks. [13]
The roller coaster has a total track length of 3,700 feet (1,100 m). The initial drop has a 60 degree vertical angle, with the roller coaster exerting 3.5 g-forces to its riders. [1] [6] Originally sporting a yellow track and grey support color scheme, Steel Eel was repainted in 2019 to feature purple supports and yellow track. [10] [14] Steel Eel operates with two trains. Each of the two trains can accommodate 36 passengers, including six cars a train. Each car has three rows with two seats to a single row. [1] [10] Each seat features a lap bar restraint. [13]
Upon opening, the roller coaster received generally positive reviews from critics and guests. A report by Texas-based newspaper, The Monitor , recorded American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) reactions of the roller coaster, with one member stating it was simply "'smooth'", another stating it "'loads of fun'", and another stating it was "'incredible'". [15] A consensus among ACE members thought the Steel Eel positively reinforced its steel inverted roller coaster counterpart in the park. [15] John Morthland, writing for magazine Texas Monthly reviewing Texas roller coasters, commented that if roller coaster riders liked receiving their "thrills right side up", Steel Eel was the right fit. A commercial produced by Busch Entertainment and GSD&M, Austin received the Brass Ring award in 1999 by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) for the park's Steel Eel roller coaster. [16] Steel Eel has received several placements on Amusement Today 's Golden Ticket Awards for being one of the top steel roller coasters.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas, formerly known simply as Fiesta Texas, is a theme park located in Northwest San Antonio. It opened on March 14, 1992, in the La Cantera master-planned development and district as the first business in that development. Spanning 200 acres (81 ha), the park was originally built to become a destination musical show park with its focus on the musical culture of the state of Texas. The park was purchased by Time Warner in 1995, and branded as a Six Flags park for the 1996 season.
Batman: The Ride is an inverted roller coaster based on the DC Comics character Batman and found at seven Six Flags theme parks in the United States. Built by consulting engineers Bolliger & Mabillard, it rises to a height of between 100 and 105 feet and reaches top speeds of 50 mph (80 km/h). The original roller coaster at Six Flags Great America was partially devised by the park's general manager Jim Wintrode. Batman: The Ride was the world's first inverted roller coaster when it opened in 1992, and has since been awarded Coaster Landmark status by the American Coaster Enthusiasts. Clones of the ride exist at amusement parks around the world.

Superman: Krypton Coaster is a steel roller coaster located at Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement park in San Antonio. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the Floorless Coaster model opened to the public in 2000 as one of the first of its kind in the world. The well-received ride held the title for the world's tallest vertical loop from its opening until 2013. Superman: Krypton Coaster stands 168 feet (51 m) tall and reaches a maximum speed of 70 mph (110 km/h).
Montu is an inverted roller coaster at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in Tampa, Florida. Designed by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard, it is the park's second roller coaster designed by that company following the success of Kumba, which opened 3 years prior. When the ride opened on May 16, 1996, it was the world's tallest and fastest inverted roller coaster, a title it has since conceded to Alpengeist at sister park Busch Gardens Williamsburg. The ride stands 150 feet (46 m) tall and reaches speeds of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).
Kraken is a steel roller coaster located at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida, United States. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the ride opened as the second longest floorless coaster in the world on June 1, 2000, with a track length measuring 4,177 feet (1,273 m). It features a total of seven inversions and reaches a maximum speed of 65 mph (105 km/h). The coaster was named after a fictional sea monster of the same name. In late 2016, Kraken underwent a refurbishment and reopened as Kraken Unleashed in June 2017. A virtual reality experience was added to the ride, but due to technical difficulties and extensive wait times, the feature was permanently removed the following year.
SeaWorld San Antonio is a 416-acre (168 ha) marine mammal park, oceanarium and animal theme park in the Westover Hills District of San Antonio, Texas, on the city's west side. It is the largest of the three parks in the SeaWorld chain owned and operated by United Parks & Resorts. As North America's largest marine-life theme park, and one of the world's largest marine-life theme parks, it is focused on conservation, education and animal rescue. It is a member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Goliath is a steel roller coaster located at Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park in Valencia, California. Manufactured by Giovanola of Switzerland, the hypercoaster is located in the Goliath Plaza section of the park and opened to the public on February 11, 2000. Its sub-tropical theme is characterized by ancient ruins of the Mayan civilization. The ride is nearly identical to Titan at Six Flags Over Texas, but it lacks a 540-degree upward helix prior to the mid-course brake run and features a slightly shorter track layout.
Iron Rattler is a steel roller coaster located at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. Originally opening as a wooden coaster called Rattler in 1992, it was converted to steel and renamed Iron Rattler in 2013. Designed by Alan Schilke and built by Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC), the ride features a zero-g-roll inversion, which was a first among hybrid coasters made of wood and steel.
Flight Deck is a steel inverted roller coaster located at California's Great America in Santa Clara, California. Built by Bolliger & Mabillard and designed by Werner Stengel, the roller coaster made its debut on March 20, 1993, as Top Gun. The roller coaster was built as Paramount, who had purchased the Great America theme park in 1992 along with several other parks, sought to expand its entertainment opportunities and promote its films. After Paramount sold off its Great America park to Cedar Fair, the roller coaster was rebranded as Flight Deck.
Volcano: The Blast Coaster, or simply Volcano, was an inverted roller coaster located at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, United States. Designed by Werner Stengel, it was the first launched roller coaster manufactured by Intamin and the first of its kind in the world to be inverted. Its launch mechanism utilized linear induction motor (LIM) technology. After a series of delays, Volcano opened to the public on August 3, 1998. A portion of the ride was enclosed inside an artificial mountain, constructed in 1979, which previously housed other attractions. Following nearly two decades of operation, Volcano abruptly closed a few weeks into the 2018 season, and the closure became permanent during the following offseason.
D. H. Morgan Manufacturing, later simply known as Morgan, was a manufacturer of roller coaster trains, custom amusement rides, roller coasters, children's rides and other amusement devices. Founded in 1983, the company was originally headquartered in Scotts Valley, California. In 1991, the company moved to La Selva Beach, California, and into a new 55,000-square-foot indoor manufacturing facility. That facility was later increased to 75,000 square feet. The company produced a variety of rides from 1983 until 2001, but is probably best known for its steel hyper coasters.
Shambhala: Expedición al Himalaya is a steel hypercoaster roller coaster located at PortAventura Park in Salou and Vilaseca, Spain. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, it was the tallest and fastest coaster in Europe at the time of its opening. The height and speed records were beaten in April 2017 by Red Force, which was also opened in PortAventura World in its new theme park Ferrari Land. Among coasters with a lift hill, the height and speed records were beaten in July 2018, when Hyperion opened at Energylandia in Poland. Shambhala is named and themed after the inaccessible land in the Himalayas: Shambhala. The coaster was announced on 24 October 2011, and opened to the public on 12 May 2012.
Mako is a steel roller coaster located at SeaWorld Orlando in Orlando, Florida, United States. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the hypercoaster model opened to the public on June 10, 2016. Mako is named after the mako shark and is located in the Sea of Mystery section of the park. It reaches a height of 200 feet (61 m), a maximum speed of 73 mph (117 km/h), and features a track length of 4,760 feet (1,450 m).
DC Rivals HyperCoaster is a steel hypercoaster at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Manufactured by Mack Rides, it is the longest, fastest, and tallest hypercoaster in the Southern Hemisphere. It officially opened on 22 September 2017, becoming the newest attraction added to Warner Bros. Movie World since Doomsday Destroyer in 2016 and the latest roller coaster addition since Green Lantern Coaster in 2011. The roller coaster reaches a height of 61.6 metres (202 ft) with a maximum speed of 115.1 kilometres per hour (71.5 mph) and has a total track length of 1.4 kilometres (4,593.2 ft).
Steel Curtain is a steel hypercoaster located at Kennywood amusement park in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, United States, near Pittsburgh. Manufactured by S&S – Sansei Technologies, the coaster reaches a height of 220 feet (67 m) and features nine inversions, including a 197-foot (60 m) corkscrew that is the world's tallest inversion. Themed to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the roller coaster is named after the Steel Curtain, the nickname for the Steelers' defensive line during the 1970s.
Texas Stingray is a wooden roller coaster at SeaWorld San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, manufactured by Great Coasters International (GCI) and designed by Skyline Attractions. The coaster opened in February 2020 and operated for just a few weeks before the park closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The coaster reopened when the park resumed limited operation on June 11, 2020.
Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger is a steel roller coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, Texas. Located in the Crackaxle Canyon section, it was designed as a dive coaster model and was manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard. It opened on July 30, 2022, replacing the Sundance Theatre. At a maximum vertical angle of 95°, the roller coaster is the world's steepest dive coaster.
