Stephanie D. Coleman (born April 13,1988) is a Chicago politician. Coleman is the current alderman of Chicago's 16th ward,taking office as a member of the Chicago City Council in May 2019. She defeated incumbent alderman Toni Foulkes in the 2019 Chicago aldermanic elections. She is also the Democratic Party Committeeman in the 16th ward. Coleman was born on April 13,1988. [3] She is the daughter of Shirley Coleman,who as an alderman for the Englewood area from 1991 to 2007. [1] [3] Due to this background she has sometimes used the nickname "Daughter of Englewood." [3] [4] She attended Emannuel Christian School and Chicago Military Academy High School,and later received her B.A. in business management from Robert Morris University and her M.S. in non-profit management from Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. Since 2016,she has been City Vice-Chair in the Cook County Young Democrats. [4] Prior to being elected to office,she also served as an aide to Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer. [5] She first ran for office in the 2015 Chicago aldermanic election against Toni Foulkes,and lost by a narrow margin in the run-off election. [1] [6] She challenged Foulkes again in 2019,and this time won with 67% of the vote in the run-off. [1] [6]
Coleman took office on May 20,2019. She is a member of the Black Caucus and the Progressive Caucus in City Council.

As of 2017,Coleman is the only alderman to date elected in the 16th Ward for four consecutive terms. Coleman made history as the only African American Chicago female alderman who is an ordained minister and pastor.

Since no candidate received a majority of votes,a runoff election was held on April 2,2019,between the two candidates with the most votes,Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle. Lightfoot defeated Preckwinkle in the runoff election to become mayor,and was sworn in as mayor on May 20,2019.

United Working Families (UWF) is an independent political organization based in Chicago,Illinois. It was formed in 2014 as a coalition between the Chicago Teachers Union,SEIU Healthcare Illinois Indiana,Grassroots Illinois Action,and Action Now. Although it is not a formal political party,the organization recruits and trains political candidates and organizers,endorses and provides support to political candidates,and engages in community organizing. Its stated goal is to "create space for independent politics" in Chicago and Illinois and to enact a "vision for a city and a state that provides for the many,not just the wealthy few." The organization has been characterized as part of the progressive movement and the labor movement.
The Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus is a bloc of aldermen in the Chicago City Council,designed with the goal of "representing the needs and interests of Chicago's Black communities." During the 2019–23 term,the caucus consists of 20 members,out of the council's 50 aldermen. As of June 2023,the chair of the caucus is Stephanie Coleman.
