Anthony V. Napolitano (born March 29,1975) [1] is the current Alderman for Chicago's 41st ward,located on the Northwest side and including Edison Park,Norwood Park,Oriole Park,O'Hare and Edgebrook.
Napolitano worked as a Chicago police officer from 2000 to 2005,and later as a Chicago firefighter. [2]
Napolitano was elected as the 41st ward alderman in 2015,unseating incumbent alderman Mary O'Connor. He was reelected in 2019 and 2023.
He is a member of the following committees:Aviation,Committees,Rules and Ethics,Human Relations,Pedestrian and Traffic Safety,Public Safety and Transportation and Public Way. He was a member of the now inactive Joint Committee on Finance-Public Safety. [3]
In the runoff of the 2019 Chicago mayoral election,Napolitano joined Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 in endorsing Lori Lightfoot. [4] [5]
In November 2019,Napolitano was one of fifteen aldermen to oppose a $72 million property tax increase in Mayor Lori Lightfoot's first budget that included $7 million in funding for City Colleges,$32 million in funding to retire a general obligation bond issue and $18 million in funding for libraries. However,he voted for the budget as a whole. [6]
Napolitano's party affiliation at various times has been reported as either Republican or as unaffiliated with a political party. [7] [8] Illinois does not have party registration,Illinois holds open primary elections,and members of the Chicago City Council are elected in nonpartisan elections. [9] This makes party affiliation a matter of self-identification. Napolitano identifies as an independent. [8]
Napolitano is married to Jamie O’Shaughnessy and they have 3 children. [10]
The Chicago City Council is the legislative branch of the government of the City of Chicago in Illinois. It consists of 50 alderpersons elected from 50 wards to serve four-year terms. The council is called into session regularly,usually monthly,to consider ordinances,orders,and resolutions whose subject matter includes code changes,utilities,taxes,and many other issues. Since no candidate received a majority of votes,a runoff election was held on April 2,2019,between the two candidates with the most votes,Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle. Lightfoot defeated Preckwinkle in the runoff election to become mayor,and was sworn in as mayor on May 20,2019.

The 2023 Chicago mayoral election was held on February 28,2023,to elect the mayor of Chicago,Illinois. With no candidate receiving a majority of votes in the initial round of the election,a runoff election was held on April 4. This two-round election took place alongside other 2023 Chicago elections,including races for City Council,city clerk,city treasurer,and police district councils. The election was officially nonpartisan,with winner Brandon Johnson being elected to a four-year term which began on May 15.
