Concord is the capital city of the U.S. state of New Hampshire and the seat of Merrimack County. As of the 2020 census the population was 43,976, making it the 3rd most populous city in New Hampshire after Manchester and Nashua. Governor Benning Wentworth gave the city its current name in 1765 following a boundary dispute with the neighboring town of Bow; the name was meant to signify the new concord, or harmony, between the two towns.

William Boyd III is an American politician who has served as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives since 2021, representing Hillsborough County's 21st district, which contains the town of Merrimack. A member of the Republican Party, Boyd ran in an April 2021 special election to succeed Dick Hinch, who died of COVID-19 in December 2020. Boyd defeated the Democratic nominee, former state representative Wendy E.N. Thomas, by a margin of 2,531 votes to 2,144. Boyd's campaign was assisted by Mike Pompeo, a former United States secretary of state, and Tom Cotton, a United States senator from Arkansas.
Wendy E. N. Thomas is an American microbiologist and politician who served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 2018 until 2020, representing Hillsborough County's 21st district, which contains the town of Merrimack. In 2018, Thomas, a local activist and member of the Democratic Party, successfully ran for the New Hampshire House of Representatives, receiving 6.5% of the vote in the multi-member constituency, placing 7th out of the 8 winning candidates. In 2020, Thomas ran for re-election in the 21st district; however, she was defeated in the general election, receiving 6.2% of the vote and placing 10th.
