Steven John Croft (born 11 October 1984) is an English former first-class cricketer who played for Lancashire County Cricket Club from 2005 until 2024. He bats right-handed and can bowl both medium-fast and off breaks. In 2008 Croft was given the Lancashire members' Player of the Year and One-Day Player of the Year awards. In 2008–09 he played for the Auckland Aces in New Zealand as an overseas player. Awarded his Lancashire cap in 2010,Croft was part of the Lancashire team that won the County Championship in 2011.
Born in Blackpool,Lancashire,Croft made his debut for the Lancashire Second XI at the age of 16,in May 2001. He made his first-class Lancashire debut in 2005,having previously made his list A debut for the Lancashire Cricket Board in 2002. He spent the winters of 2005–06 and 2006–07 playing club cricket in Australia. [1]
Croft finished the 2008 season with 585 first-class runs in thirteen matches,with an average of 32.50. He hit one century,his maiden hundred a 122 against Nottinghamshire and three fifties. In one-day matches,he hit 279 runs from thirteen matches,averaging 31. He was also the club's leading wicket-taker with fourteen,at an average of 21.71. In Twenty20 matches he hit 134 runs from eleven matches and took six wickets. [2] [3] He also won the Player of the Month award for August. [4] In September 2008 Croft won two awards for the 2008 season winning the club's members Player of the Year award and the one-day Player of the Year award. [2] [5] At the start of August 2010,Croft was awarded his county cap. [6]
Croft signed a contract to become the overseas player at Auckland Aces,one of six first-class teams clubs in New Zealand for the State championship for the 2008–09 season. [2] [3] In eight first-class matches,he scored 330 runs,including two half-centuries,and averaged 36.66. [7] Croft also played ten list A matches,amassing 209 runs with a single score above 50. [8]
During a drawn County Championship match against Warwickshire in August 2011,Croft scored the second century of his first-class career,and his first in three years. He passed 3,000 first-class runs in the innings of 122 from 182 balls,which equalled his highest score. [9] [10] Though there was a three-year gap between his first and second centuries,in the next County Championship match Croft scored a third,this time an innings of 107 in a Lancashire victory over Worcestershire. [11] [12] On 15 September 2011,Croft scored the winning runs as Lancashire beat Somerset at Taunton to clinch the County Championship outright for the first time since 1934. Croft played in all 16 Championship matches and finished with 825 runs at an average of 31.73,making him the club's fourth highest run-scorer (only two Lancashire batsmen managed over- 1,000 runs in the 2011 season). Lancashire began their title defence poorly,with three losses from their first four County Championship matches. [14] The batsmen struggled in particular,and it was not until the third County Championship match that one of them scored a century. Against a Somerset bowling attack depleted through injury,Croft scored his fourth first-class century. [15] [16]
In June 2021,in the 2021 t20 Blast,Croft played in his 200th T20 match. [17]
He made his maiden T20 100 in June 2023,scoring 101 in a win against Northants. [18]
He retired from first-class and 50 over cricket in December 2023,signing a T20 contract only,as well as joining the county's coaching staff. [19] In September 2024,announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 39 to move into Lancashire's coaching staff on a full-time basis. [20] [21]
Croft was educated at Highfield Humanities College in his hometown of Blackpool and Myerscough College in Bilsborrow on the Fylde. [22] He has twice been the half-time guest at the club's home games at Bloomfield Road,firstly against Derby County on 21 October 2008. [2] and again on 30 November 2009 during the West Lancashire derby against Preston North End.
Glen Chapple is an English cricket coach and former cricketer. He is an all-rounder,and represented the national team in a One Day International,as well as performing well for Lancashire over many years. He bowled right-arm fast-medium,and is a right-handed batsman. With six first-class centuries to his name,Chapple shares with Mark Pettini the record for fastest first-class century,scored against declaration bowling by Glamorgan in 1993,coming off just 27 balls.
Stephen Colin Moore is a retired English cricketer. Moore is a right-handed opening batsman who played first-class cricket most recently for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 2014. He previously played for Worcestershire from 2003 until 2009 and Lancashire County Cricket Club from 2009 until 2013. Educated at St Stithians College in Johannesburg and at Exeter University,from which he graduated MEng,Moore is also a keen saxophonist.
Samit Rohit Patel is an English cricketer. A right-handed batsman and a slow left-arm bowler,he plays first-class cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Patel made his One Day International debut for England in August 2008,however was later dropped from the side after failing to meet fitness levels. After an absence of 2+1⁄2 years,he returned to the ODI side in 2011 and made his Twenty20 International debut,before becoming the 651st player to represent England at Test cricket by winning his first cap on the tour of Sri Lanka in 2012.
Timothy Thomas Bresnan is an English former first-class cricketer,who last played for Warwickshire. He played as a fast-medium bowler who had ability with the bat. He was a member of the England team that won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.
Thomas Christopher Smith is a former English cricketer who played for Lancashire County Cricket Club. He had also been a member of the England Academy team. In 2008,he played for Leicestershire on loan because he was unable to break into Lancashire's first team. He is an all-rounder,bowling right-arm medium and batting left-handed. At the start of the 2009 season,Smith was promoted to open the batting,having previously batted in the lower order,and secured his place there. In 2011,the year Lancashire won the County Championship for the first time since 1950,Smith became the first Lancashire player to score a century and take four wickets in the same one-day match. In 2011/12 Smith played for the Matabeleland Tuskers in Zimbabwe as an overseas player in the domestic twenty20 competition.
Steven John Mullaney is an English retired cricketer best known for his time playing for,and captaining,Nottinghamshire. During his 18 year career he also played for Lancashire and Trent Rockets along with representing England at the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Karl Robert Brown is an English cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Lancashire until 2018. Brown made his first-class debut in 2006 and his list A debut the following year. Between 2005 and 2007,Brown played 15 Youth One Day Internationals. In 2011,Brown scored his maiden centuries in first-class and list A cricket and debuted for Lancashire in twenty20s.
James Allenby is an Australian former professional cricketer who most recently played for Somerset. He played as a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler.
Gareth David Cross is an English cricketer who plays as a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper who occasionally bowls right arm medium-fast. He played for Lancashire from 2005 until his release in 2013,and the following year signed for Derbyshire. In 2015 he returned to Clifton as professional having earlier come through their junior ranks.
Liam Andrew Dawson is an English cricketer who plays for Hampshire and for the England cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman who bowls slow left-arm orthodox spin. He made his international debut for England in July 2016,and has since played all three formats of the game for England,the last in 2022. Dawson was part of the England squad that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup,however,he did not play in any matches during the tournament.
James William Arthur Taylor is an English former cricketer and cricket selector who played for Nottinghamshire and England. A right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm leg break bowler,Taylor made his debut in first-class cricket in 2008 for Leicestershire and made major impressions in his first county seasons. He is noted as being a fine fielder in the covers. He became the youngest Leicestershire one-day centurion and first-class double centurion. In 2009,Taylor also became the youngest player in Leicestershire's history to score 1,000 championship runs in a season. A promising talent in his 34 white-ball appearances for England,Taylor was forced into retirement at just 26 years of age due to a previously undiagnosed heart condition.
Kyle Malcolm Jarvis is a Zimbabwean former cricketer who represented Zimbabwe and played for Lancashire. The son of another former Zimbabwean international cricketer Malcolm Jarvis,he was educated at St John's College,Harare,where he excelled at rugby and cricket. Kyle was a key bowler for Zimbabwe in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup and he also played for the Zimbabwe U-19 Rugby Team. He was coached by Zimbabwean veteran seamer Heath Streak. He was one of the fastest bowlers to have played for Zimbabwe bowling at 140 km/h very often during his early career. On 17 June 2021,Jarvis retired from all forms of cricket after battling a trio of illnesses earlier this year.
