Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom.
A water polo tournament was held on the Seine on 11 and 12 August 1900 as part of the 1900 Summer Olympics. Eight teams from four countries, all European, entered the event, although only seven ended up playing. The Osborne Swimming Club of Manchester, England, which has been listed with two rosters that are nearly entirely different, became the first Olympic water polo champions by defeating the Brussels Swimming and Water Polo Club of Belgium. Third place went to the two French-based semi-finalists, Libellule de Paris and Pupilles de Neptune de Lille, the latter of whom entered two teams, but merged them together after the first round.

The 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm saw the fourth water polo tournament at Olympics. All games took place in the newly built swimming stadium in Djurgårdsbrunnsviken from 7 to 16 July 1912. All medals were decided by using the Bergvall system.
Spårvägens Simförening, commonly known as Spårvägens SF or Spårvägen, is a Swedish swimming club based in western Stockholm. The club is residing in Vällingbybadet, Spångabadet, Tenstabadet, Beckombergabadet, Husbybadet, Eriksdalsbadet, and Nälstabadet. The best swimmer in recent times is former world record holder Emma Igelström.
Harald Sigfrid Alexander Julin was a Swedish swimmer and water polo player who competed at the 1906, 1908, 1912 and 1920 Olympics. In 100 m freestyle swimming he won a bronze medal in 1908, and failed to reach the finals in 1906 and 1912; he finished fifth in the 4×250 m freestyle relay in 1906. In water polo he won bronze medals in 1908 and 1920 and a silver at the 1912 Summer Olympics in his native Stockholm. His sons Åke and Rolf also became Olympic water polo players.
Stockholms Kappsimningsklubb, commonly known as Stockholms KK or SKK, is a Swedish swimming club from Stockholm founded on 12 July 1895, who competes in swimming and water polo. The swimming club goes under the nickname Kappis. The most famous swimmers of SKK are the twin brothers Arne Borg and Åke Borg. SKK organizes yearly an invitational meet named after Arne Borg, Arne Borgs minne.
Charles Sydney Smith was born in Wigan, the ninth of eleven children born to Thomas Smith and Elizabeth née Sayer. He was a British water polo player who competed as goalkeeper for the England Water Polo team which won gold medals in the London games of 1908, and the Stockholm games of 1912. After the Great War he returned, at the age of 44, as part of the Great Britain team to win a third gold medal at the Antwerp games in 1920. He was still in the team four years later competing in the Paris games of 1924 where the team was knocked out in the first round by the Hungarian team after extra time.
Robert Theodor Andersson was a Swedish water polo player, diver, and freestyle swimmer who competed in the 1906 Summer Olympics, in the 1908 Summer Olympics, in the 1912 Summer Olympics, and in the 1920 Summer Olympics.
Karl Torsten Kumfeldt was a Swedish water polo goalkeeper and breaststroke swimmer. He competed in water polo at the 1908, 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics and won one silver and two bronze medals. In 1908 he also took part in the 200 m breaststroke event.
Erik Gustaf Bergvall was a Swedish water polo player, journalist and sports official. He also promoted the Bergvall system, a variation of the traditional knockout tournament system which was used at the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics.
Tore Albert Lindzén was a Swedish water polo player who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics.
Sanna Maria Karolin Askelöf is a Swedish judoka who competed in the women's half-lightweight category. Being raised by a Swedish father and a Norwegian mother and holding a dual citizenship to compete internationally, Askelof held five national senior titles in her own division, picked up a total of twenty-eight medals in her career, and represented her paternal nation Sweden in the 52-kg class at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Throughout most of her sporting career until 2009, Askelof trained as a full-fledged member of the judo squad for Södra Sports Club in Farsta.
Åke Leif Julin was a Swedish water polo player and swimmer. He was part of Swedish teams that finished fifth and ninth at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics, respectively.
Sten Anders Flodqvist is a Swedish water polo player. He competed in the men's tournament at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
