Sundial is the second studio album by American hip hop artist Noname. It was self-released on August 11, 2023, and features guest appearances by Eryn Allen Kane, Jay Electronica, Common and Billy Woods, amongst others.
On May 15, 2019, Noname broke the news about her second studio album being titled Factory Baby. The album was expected to be released in late 2021 but was later scrapped. According to the rapper, she had trouble finding producers she could "genuinely connect with sonically". [1]
On April 9, 2023, she revealed details of the upcoming album and a release date slated for July. [2] The lead single "Balloons" with Eryn Allen Kane and Jay Electronica, her first solo single in three years, was announced on July 13 and initially planned to be released on July 21. [3] However, the news caused backlash amongst her fans due to some of Electronica's controversial statements and led to the cancellation of the single, which she said she would rather share "with the rest of the album". [4] While arguing with fans online, she went as far as pondering whether to release the album at all. [5] The definitive release date and tracklist of the album spanning 11 tracks were also shared on July 13. [6] Further guest artists included Common, Billy Woods, Ayoni, $ilkmoney and Stout. [7]
Noname performed some of the tracks at rapper Mike's Young World III festival on July 15. [8] To further promote the record, Noname announced the "Sundial Block Party", expected to take place in Chicago on August 17. [9]
Following the release of the album, Jay Electronica was accused of antisemitism and of suggesting the war in Ukraine is "a hoax" for his verse on "Balloons". [10]

Sundial was met with widespread acclaim and rave reviews by critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, Sundial received an average score of 87, based on nine reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". [12]
Reviewing the album for AllMusic. Paul Simpson felt that, "Sundial has a harsher tone than Noname's previous efforts, but it still contains many powerful, thought-provoking lines, and her skills as an emcee have never been stronger." [13] In the review for Clash , Robin Murray wrote that, "[By] Refusing to take the easy route, ‘Sundial’ can at times be daunting, and the task of following the profound success of her earlier work isn’t an easy one. On repeated listens, however, the project breaks open as a singular work of Black American artistry." [14] In The Guardian , Ben Beaumont-Thomas claimed, "You sense some listeners will find Sundial too ethically complex and contrary. Hopefully many more will flock to Noname, who brings piercing intellect and joie de vivre to tough questions. A librarian, yes, but also a moon stalker." [15]
Writing for The Line of Best Fit , Noah Barker commented that, "Her striking lyrical flow has become more relentless but comes off more like a constant drip of honey than an imposing assault, at least sonically. On the other hand, the subject matter of the lyrics is rife with Socratic lines of moral questioning and political comedy. Every track excels in a topical focus that will not be spoiled or summarized by the deadline-watching eyes of a critic." [16] For Pitchfork , Alphonse Pierre claimed, "The one slight drag of Sundial: In contrast to Noname constantly barring out, her hooks sound a little weak, as on “Hold Me Down,” where her plain melodies are backed by the type of full-throated choir that sounded better on Chance’s Coloring Book. The features, however, are explosive." [17] in the review for PopMatters , Luis Aguasvias wrote, " There are outstanding performances throughout Sundial. Rapper billy woods in “Gospel?” spews magma, and Chicago legend Common drops a verse on the song “Oblivion” that could have easily fit into his great album Be from 2005. The singer Ayoni adds her voice on two tracks to make Sundial feel like a momentous occasion." [18]

Elpadaro F. Electronica Allah, known professionally as Jay Electronica, is an American rapper and record producer. Born and raised in New Orleans, he first saw recognition with release of his debut mixtape, Act I: Eternal Sunshine (2007). Its success, along with his standalone single "Exhibit C", led American rapper Jay-Z to sign Electronica to the latter's record label, Roc Nation—following a multi-label bidding war—in 2010. His debut studio album, A Written Testimony (2020), was met with critical acclaim and entered the Billboard 200 at number 12; it was followed by his second album, Act II: The Patents of Nobility (2020) in October of that same year. His guest performance on Kanye West's 2021 song, "Jesus Lord", marked his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
Jermaine Lamarr Cole is an American rapper and record producer. Born on a military base in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cole initially gained attention as a rapper following the release of his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in early 2007. Intent on further pursuing a musical career, he signed with Jay-Z's Roc Nation in 2009 and released two additional mixtapes: The Warm Up (2009) and Friday Night Lights (2010) to further critical acclaim as he garnered a wider following.

Tahj Malik Chandler, better known by his stage name Saba, is an American rapper and record producer. He grew up in the Austin neighborhood of the West Side of Chicago. He is a co-founder of the musical collective Pivot Gang with his brother Jerrel Chandler, their late cousin Walter Long Jr, their high school friend Logan Yutters, Jevunte Wheeler (squeakPivot), and Jimmy. He is also one third of the supergroup Ghetto Sage, with Smino and Noname.
Christopher Smith Jr., better known by his stage name Smino, is an American rapper, and singer-songwriter. He is the founder of the musical collective Zero Fatigue with Bari, Monte Booker, Jay2, and Ravyn Lenae. He is one third of the supergroup Ghetto Sage, with Saba and Noname. Smino is signed to Downtown Records and Interscope.
Telefone is the debut mixtape by American rapper Noname. Originally announced in 2012, the mixtape faced numerous delays and was finally released four years later on July 31, 2016, as a free digital download. It features guest appearances from Saba, Ravyn Lenae, Raury, and Smino among others.
"Top Off" is a song recorded by American record producer DJ Khaled featuring American rappers Jay-Z and Future and American singer Beyoncé. A Written Testimony was primarily recorded in 40 days, from December 2019 to February 2020. It was supported by "Shiny Suit Theory", featuring vocals from Jay-Z and The-Dream, released in November 2010 and rereleased as a single on Tidal in September 2018.

The song was produced by Jay Electronica, who raps about advice given to him by Sean Combs. The song is Jay Electronica's first collaboration with Jay-Z, who sent in his verse by email as an effort to sign Jay Electronica to a record deal.
"Snow on tha Bluff" is a song by American rapper J. Cole.
