It was released worldwide as a single on 20 May 2022 via digital download and streaming as the fourth single from the band's eleventh studio album Deceivers , and was available as a limited 7" vinyl, with a b-side "The Judging Eyes", a short instrumental remake of "You Will Know My Name" from 2014's War Eternal . The lyrics of "Sunset over the Empire" deal with the topic of an apocalypse. [2]
B-side "The Judging Eyes" was previously used as the track selection music for the "As the Stages Burn!" DVD, but was not released as an individual track until its release on "Sunset over the Empire".
