Background

"My Shadow and I" and "A Fight I Must Win" were initially released as part of the 2017 album Will to Power , but were not released as a single until four and a half years later - during the Deceivers album cycle. The band did not make an announcement regarding this single, however it was made available via legitimate stores such as EMP. Due to already having been released on Will to Power, the single was not released on streaming platforms. The tracks are the only singles from Will to Power for which a music video was not produced.

An uncut 12" version of the vinyl was produced exclusively as a promotional copy, and it is reported that less than 20 copies of this version exist. [2]

Lyrical content

In a track-by-track video detailing the songs from Will to Power , while discussing "My Shadow and I", vocalist and lyricist Alissa White-Gluz said that "this song was actually the first song that [she] started working on when it came to writing lyrics for Will to Power", and that this song came about due to feelings of anger. "I was just really angry and really, kinda, in a bad mood, and I just texted Michael [Amott] and I said, "Can you send me something really heavy? Because I'm just, I'm really angry right now and I just feel like I can get it out"."

When focusing on the meaning of the lyrics of "My Shadow and I", Alissa said "I just wanted to play on that idea, that we're always in this moment between light and dark in our lives". [3]
