Suresh Kalmadi (born 1 May 1944) is an Indian politician and senior sports administrator. [1] [2] He is a former member of the Indian National Congress. He was a member of parliament from Pune until May 2014. [3] He is alleged to have been involved in corrupt practices in relation to the 2010 Commonwealth Games during his tenure as president of Indian Olympic Association and chairman of Commonwealth Games 2010. He was charged with conspiracy,forgery,misconduct and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and later arrested for the same in April 2014,but has not yet faced trial. [4] In December 2016,the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Suresh Kalmadi as its lifetime patron. However,he refused to accept the post until he was able to clear his name. [5]
Kalmadi was born to Mangalore-based Dr. K. Shamrao Kalmadi and Shanta Rao Kalmadi.[ citation needed ] He speaks Konkani,Kannada,Marathi,English,Hindi and Tulu language. He was educated at St. Vincent's High School and Fergusson College,Pune. Kalmadi joined the National Defence Academy in 1960 and was commissioned as a pilot in the Indian Air Force,serving between 1964 and 1972. He then became an instructor with the Air Force Training Team of the NDA from 1972 to 1974 before retiring from the IAF as a squadron leader. [6]
He is married to Meera Kalmadi. The couple have two daughters and one son. [7]
In 1977,Kalmadi became the president of the Indian Youth Congress,Pune,and the next year took over President-ship of the Youth Congress,Maharashtra,a post he held from 1978 to 1980.[ citation needed ] In 1980,as the president of the Maharashtra Athletics Association,Kalmadi undertook the selection trials for the Marathon team to represent the country at the Moscow Olympics. This soon led to the establishment of the Pune International Marathon.[ citation needed ]
Kalmadi served as president of the Indian Youth Congress (Socialist) 1981–1986. [8]
He was a member of the Rajya Sabha for three terms from 1982 to 1996,and again in 1998.
Kalmadi took over as the Chairman of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation and in 1989 started the Pune Festival.[ citation needed ]
He was also elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996,and to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004. During the tenure of P. V. Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister of India,Suresh Kalmadi served as the Minister of State for Railways from 1995 to 1996. [7] That year he presented the Railway Budget. [9]
Kalmadi served as the president of the Indian Olympic Association from 1996 to 2012. [9] [10] He also served as the president of Asian Athletics Association from 2000 to 2013 and was named its Life President in 2015. [11] [9]
Kalmadi,as the Indian Olympic Association,signed an agreement to bring the Formula One Grand Prix to India in 2007. Later that year,the UK-based organizers Formula One Administration Limited signed a ₹ 16 billion (equivalent to₹48 billionorUS$570 million in 2023) contract in this regard with India-based JPSK Sports Private Limited. Records obtained by The Indian Express showed that Pune-based Sulba Realty Private Limited was a 13% shareholder in JPSK,along with Jaypee Group (74%). Kalmadi's son Sumeer was a director in Sulba Realty at the time,which would have implied a conflict of interest. While the JP in JPSK stood for Jaypee Group,it was alleged that the SK was a reference to Suresh/Sumeer Kalmadi. Records from the Registrar of Companies,India showed that a year after the company was floated,Kalmadi's daughter,Payal Aditya Bhartia,and his son-in-law,Aditya Bhartia,joined JPSK as independent directors. Kalmadi's conduct around the 2010 Commonwealth Games came under scrutiny, with the Central Vigilance Commission (India's anti-corruption organisation) asking the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe certain aspects of the games' organisation. [13] For this, the opposition demanded Kalmadi's resignation. [14]
On 2 August 2010, Suresh Kalmadi had bought hundreds of Air Conditioners for ₹4,00,000 and treadmills for ₹9,00,000 for the Commonwealth games and the sports facilities of Indian players. Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) blames agencies under the Delhi government and the sports ministry for large-scale procedural violations and corruption. [15]
On 25 April 2011, CBI arrested former CWG Organising Committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi in the Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) case. He was arrested under Sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. [16]
On 20 May 2011, CBI filed the first chargesheet in a special CBI court against Kalmadi. The CBI alleged that he was the main accused in awarding TSR system contract to a Swiss firm. The charge sheet said, "Kalmadi is the main accused as he was the person with all supreme powers. He had the supreme over-riding powers in the Organising Committee of the CWG, 2010." In addition to Kalmadi, the CBI named two companies and eight persons including OC former Secretary General Lalit Bhanot and former Director General VK Verma as accused. [17] [18]
Kalmadi's membership of the Indian National Congress Party was suspended after being arrested and charged with corruption. On 26 April 2011 he was sacked from the post of president of the Indian Olympic Association. [19] On 1 July 2013 he lost the election for the post of president of the Asian Athletics Association, a post which he had held for 13 consecutive years, losing to Qatar's Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad. [20]
Suresh Kalmadi was in jail for 10 months and the court asked him to pay a surety amount of ₹500,000 (equivalent to ₹940,000orUS$11,000 in 2023). [21] Kalmadi was allowed by a Delhi court on 13 July 2012 to go to London for 2012 Olympics. [22] He was, however, restrained on 25 July 2012 by the Delhi High court from participating in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, saying his participation can cause "embarrassment" to the nation. [23]
He claimed to be suffering from dementia during course of investigation while in Tihar jail. [24] Medical tests were not conclusive to be able to prove his claim. [25]
The 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XIX Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Delhi 2010, were an international multi-sport event for the members of the Commonwealth that was held in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010. A total of 4352 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events, making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date. It was also the largest international multi-sport event to be staged in Delhi and India, eclipsing the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main stadium of the event.

Among those implicated in the theft and arrested were then Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, as well as former Chief Minister, Jagannath Mishra. The scandal led to the end of Lalu's reign as Chief Minister. Dineshwar Prasad Sharma is also alleged to have received ₹300.60 crore from S. N. Sinha. On 23 December 2017, Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted by a special CBI court while Jagannath Misra was acquitted.

"Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto" is a song by Indian musician A. R. Rahman. It was the official anthem for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which was held in Delhi, India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The highly anticipated song was released on 28 August for digital download, receiving notably mixed responses from the Organising Committee, critics and listeners alike. The music video of the song was released on 23 September, which featured only a shorter version of the song. The new version became the official anthem, since it received very positive responses. The title of the song is based on the motto of the games, "Come out and play".

The 2G spectrum case was a political controversy in which politicians and private officials of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition government India were allegedly involved in selling or allotting 122 2G spectrum licenses on conditions that provided an advantage to specific telecom operators. A. Raja, then Telecom Minister, was accused of selling 2G spectrum licenses at a very low cost which resulted in the loss of ₹1,760 billion in government revenue. Raja was also accused of not following rules and regulations as well as not recognizing any advice from the Ministries of Finance and Law and Justice of India while allotting 2G spectrum licenses to telecom operators. Series of allegations were made on allotting 2G spectrum licenses including allegations from Central Bureau of Investigation after investigating the case alleging Raja for intentionally advancing the cut-off date to favour some specific firms, which were allegedly ineligible for applying for telecom licenses, in return for bribes.

Ram Singh Yadav is an Indian marathon runner. Ram represented India at the 2012 Summer Olympics, London. He achieved the B qualification standard (2:18:00) by clocking a time of 2:16:59 at the 2012 Mumbai Marathon, which is also his best performance in this event. He is the second Indian athlete ever to be qualified for the marathon event of the Olympics. Before Yadav, Shivnath Singh was the Indian athlete who participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Ram is a havildar in the Indian Army.

The 2013 Asian Athletics Championships were the 20th edition of the biennial athletics competition between Asian nations. It was held at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune, India between 3–7 July. Around 522 athletes from 42 nations competed at the event. It was the first time since 1989 that India had hosted the championships.
