The original tribes for this season were named Dalahican (ダラヒガン, Darahigan) and Ompus (ウンパス, Unpasu), and the merged tribe was named Tigum (ティゴム, Tigomu). As a new rule, contestants could win rewards without having to compete in reward challenges against the other tribe. In these challenges, each tribe could obtain rewards when they achieved a certain goal. Beginning with this season, each player could bring one luxury item. These items things couldn't be used as tools to survive on the island.

Prior to the tribe merge, both tribes had to burn their camp down, and to move to the specified new island. Also beginning with this season the number of jury members increased from six to seven. Ultimately, it was construction worker Yasuhito Ebisawa, who won the season by a vote of 4-3 over bar owner Sei Sugawara. Following his victory, Ebisawa went on to become an actor in Japan.

The Jong (Young) tribe was composed of the contestants age 30 and under and the Oud (Old) tribe was composed of contestants over the age of 40. Unbeknownst to the original tribes, there was a secret third tribe that consisted of two contestants, Esther Jacobs and Marnix Allegaert, who were in their 30s, who lived in an area known as "Secret Island". These two contestants were soon joined by Douwe Popma, who had been voted out immediately after a challenge. In episode 4, the two original teams were dismantled and the remaining players were mixed up into new tribes known as the North and South teams. With these new tribes, all who had previously been living on the Secret island joined one of the two new tribes in the game and Nicole Hendriks, who had been eliminated in the previous episode, re-entered the game as a replacement for the large number of contestants who had left the game. Though the main twist may have seemed like a repeat of twists that occurred in previous seasons, unlike previous seasons with a similar twist this season male contestants were from Belgium and all females from the Netherlands. While the All-Star contestants weren't eligible to win, they could vote and following a tribal swap in episode 4, they could give any contestant on their tribe immunity at tribal council. Following the merge in episode 8, the twist that was "Losers Island", was introduced to the game. After a contestant was eliminated they would be sent to Losers island where they would wait until there were only two contestants left in the game at which point the six contestants on the island would vote for one of their own to return. When it came time to vote for a winner, the public, instead of a jury decided the winner.
