The women's 400 metre freestyle event at the 2000 Summer Olympics took place on 17 September at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre in Sydney, Australia. [1]
Brooke Bennett emerged as a major force in long-distance swimming, after effortlessly winning a first gold for the United States in the event since Janet Evans did so in 1988. She maintained a powerful lead from start to finish, and posted a lifetime best of 4:05.80, making her the third fastest all-time swimmer in history behind Evans and China's Chen Hua. [2] [3] At only 18 years of age, Diana Munz fought off a sprint challenge from Costa Rica's Claudia Poll and Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson on the final lap to take home the silver in 4:07.07, extending a distance swimming legacy for the Americans with a one–two finish. [4] Meanwhile, Poll settled only for the bronze in 4:07.83. [5] [6]
Atkinson made an Olympic milestone as the first Jamaican to reach a swimming final, but missed out the podium by almost a full second in a national record of 4:08.79. [7] Russia's Nadezhda Chemezova finished fifth in 4:10.37, holding off a fast-pacing Hannah Stockbauer of Germany (4:10.38) by a hundredth of a second (0.01). Netherlands' Carla Geurts (4:12.36), and China's Chen Hua (4:13.11), the second fastest all-time swimmer, rounded out the finale. [6]

Diana Marie Munz, later known by her married name Diana DePetro, is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic champion from Moreland Hills, Ohio. She represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where she won a gold medal in the women's 4×200-meter freestyle relay and a silver medal in 400-meter freestyle. Four years later at the 2004 Athens Olympics she added a bronze medal in the 800-meter freestyle to her Olympic medal collection. She has 3 daughters; Sydney, Her song, Reogun, and Penelope.
Kosuke Hagino is a Japanese former competitive swimmer who specialized in the individual medley and 200 m freestyle. He is a four-time Olympic medalist, most notably winning gold in the 400 m individual medley at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Hannes Kalteis is an Austrian former swimmer, who specialized in long-distance freestyle events. Kalteis upset local favorite Guy Noel Schmitt to take the gold in the 1500 m freestyle at the 2000 European Junior Swimming Championships in Dunkerque, France with a time of 15:21.41.
Vesna Stojanovska is a Macedonian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. Regarded as one of Macedonia's top swimmers, Stojanovska has earned All-American honors and numerous Atlantic Coast Conference titles in her own discipline while studying in the United States.
Pilin Tachakittiranan is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. She is a two-time Olympian and a multiple-time age-group record holder in all freestyle distances. Regarded as Thailand's top female swimmer, she has won a total of five gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games.
Ha Eun-ju is a South Korean swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. She won a bronze medal, as a member of the South Korean team, in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (8:19.62), when her nation hosted the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.
Rebecca Jane Linton is a New Zealand former swimmer, who specialised in long-distance freestyle events. She held New Zealand records in the 400 and 800 m freestyle, until they were all broken by Lauren Boyle in 2012. Linton is also a member of Howick Pakuranga Swim Club in Auckland.
Ivanka Moralieva is a Bulgarian former swimmer, who specialized in long-distance freestyle events and open water marathon. Since 2001, she holds a Bulgarian record in the 1500 m freestyle from the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan (16:55.53). She also won a bronze medal in the 25 km, as an open water swimmer, at the 2004 European Aquatics Championships in Madrid, Spain (4:41:21.2).
Victor Rogut is a Moldovan former swimmer, who specialized in long-distance freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian and a member of the Moldova Swimming Team.
Mark Kwok Kin-ming is a former swimmer for Hong Kong, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle but also competed in butterfly and individual medley. He is a two-time Olympian, and a bronze medalist at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. He also holds numerous Hong Kong records in 200, 400, and 800 m freestyle, and retains a dual resident status to compete internationally for his father's homeland. While studying in the United States, Kwok has competed for the USC Trojans, and has received four All-American honors at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in four consecutive seasons.
Wan Azlan bin Wan Ali Abdullah is a retired Malaysian swimmer, who specialised in freestyle and in individual medley events. He is a two-time Olympian, and a gold medalist at the Southeast Asian Games (1997). While studying in the United States, Abdullah trained for the Pine Crest Swim Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida under his full-time coach David López-Zubero, a bronze medalist for Spain at the 1980 Summer Olympics. During his college career, Abdullah swam for the University of Georgia's Georgia Bulldogs swimming and diving team under head coach Jack Bauerle.
Roh Joo-hee is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle and breaststroke events. As a teenager, she represented South Korea in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also held numerous career bests and national records in both 200 and 400 m freestyle.
Sarah-Jane D'Arcy is an Australian former swimmer who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events. She represented the host nation Australia at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and also played for the Australian Institute of Sport under her longtime coach and mentor Mark Regan.

She represented Mexico, as a 17-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and also became a member of Sharks Swim Club at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida under her personal coach Larry Shofe.
Nataliya Korabelnikova is a Kyrgyz former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events. Korabelnikova competed in two swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 4:24.63 from the Russian Open Championships in Saint Petersburg. On the second day of the Games, Korabelnikova placed thirty-fifth in the 400 m freestyle. Swimming in heat one, she edged out Singapore's Christel Bouvron on the final lap to pick up a fifth seed by almost a full second, in a lifetime best of 4:24.29. Three days later, Korabelnikova, along with Yekaterina Tochenaya, Anna Korshikova, and Anjelika Solovieva, placed fourteenth in the 4×200 m freestyle relay (8:41.21).
