Syed Ahmad Hashmi (17 January 1932 - 4 November 2001) was an Indian Muslim scholar and politician who served as the seventh general secretary of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and the chairman of Passenger Amenities Committee. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha,upper house of the Parliament of India representing Uttar Pradesh for two terms.
Syed Ahmad Hashmi was born on 17 January 1932 in Darbhanga at the house of his maternal grandfather. [1] [2] He was brought up by his brother Syed Muhammad Hashmi,who enrolled him at the Madrasa Dīniya in Ghazipur,where he received his primary education,where he received his primary education from 1940 to 1948. He received his higher education at the Madrasa 'Aliya in Kolkata between 1948 and 1954,and graduated from the Darul Uloom Deoband in 1955. [2] [3] He studied Sahih Bukhari and Jami' al-Tirmidhi with Hussain Ahmad Madani. [4]
Hashmi stayed at Kolkata between 1957 and 1974,and taught there in the madrasa of Anjuman Nidā-e-Islām,and served as the general secretary of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind's West Bengal unit. [3] He started two weeklies,Armaghān and Kundan there,and the Government of West Bengal filed a lawsuit against the weekly Armaghan and it was stopped. [3] [5] He was a member of Rajya Sabha,the upper house of the Indian parliament,from 1974 to 1980 and 1980 to 1986. [6] He was appointed the chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board in 1977 and served as the general secretary of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind from 1973 to 1980. [2] The JUH also made him the manager of its weekly Al-Jamiat. He was a founder member of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat and served it under the capacity of a vice-president. He was a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Babri Masjid Action Committee. [3] He was a member and then the chairman of the Passenger Amenities Committee. [5] Later in his life,he dissociated from the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind,and formed Milli Jamiat Ulama,existence of which remained limited to the paper only. [2]
Hashmi died on 4 November 2001 in Delhi. [7] His funeral prayer was led by Abdul Ghafar,the then senior hadith professor of Madrasa Alia,Fatehpuri. [8]

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind or Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind is one of the leading organizations of Islamic scholars belonging to the Deobandi school of thought in India. It was founded in November 1919 by a group of Muslim scholars including Abdul Bari Firangi Mahali,Kifayatullah Dehlawi,Muhammad Ibrahim Mir Sialkoti and Sanaullah Amritsari.

Madrassa Shahi is an Islamic seminary in Moradabad,Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1879 by the poor Muslims of Moradabad under the supervision of Islamic scholar,Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi,who also established the Darul Uloom Deoband. This started as Madrasatul Ghuraba,but gained recognition as Madrasa Shahi. Its first principal was Ahmad Hasan Amrohi.
Hifzur Rahman Seoharwi was an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar and an activist of the Indian independence movement,who served as the fourth general secretary of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind. He fought against British rule for 25 years (1922-1947) and spent eight years in jail. As a politician,he opposed the partition of India,and served as a member of the Indian Parliament for the Indian National Congress from Amroha from 1952 to 1962.
Zayn al-Abidin Sajjad Meerthi (1910–1991) was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar and historian and head of the Islamic studies department of Jamia Millia Islamia. His book Tarikh-e-Millat is required reading in the syllabus of Darul Uloom Deoband and in madrasas affiliated with it.
Minnatullah Rahmani was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar who served as the first General Secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama and Darul Uloom Deoband,and a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly. He also served as the General Secretary of the Jamiat Ulama Bihar. His father Muhammad Ali Mungeri was the founder of Nadwatul Ulama and his son Wali Rahmani established the Rahmani30 institute.
Abul Muhasin Muhammad Sajjad was an Indian Islamic scholar who was one of the most influential ulemas of the 20th century. Sajjad was a founder of Anjuman-Ulama-i-Bihar,Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind,and Imarat-i-Sharia. A leader in the Indian independence movement,Abul Muhasin Muhammad Sajjad participated in the Non-cooperation Movement,Khilafat Movement,and Civil Disobedience Movement;he opposed the partition of India and championed the concept of composite nationalism. He also founded the Muslim Independent Party in 1935 to represent Muslims in Bihar who were disillusioned with Congress and the Muslim League.The Muslim Independent Party formed the government in Bihar in 1937. Yunus,the party president,became the chief minister of Bihar on 1 April 1937.
Muḥammad Usmān Mansoorpuri was an Indian Muslim scholar who served as the first National President of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind's Mahmood faction. He taught hadith at the Darul Uloom Deoband and served the seminary as a working rector.
Hafizur Rahman Wasif Dehlavi was an Indian Muslim scholar,jurist,literary critic,and a poet of the Urdu language,who served as the rector of Madrasa Aminia from 1955 to 1979. He participated in the Indian freedom struggle movement and authored books such as Adabībhūl bhulayyān̲,UrdūMasdar Nāmā and Taz̲kirah-yi Sā'il. He compiled the religious edicts of his father Kifayatullah Dehlawi as Kifāyat al-Mufti in nine volumes.
Ahmad Saeed Dehlavi was an Indian Muslim scholar and freedom struggle activist who served as the first general secretary and the fifth president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind. He also served as the third rector of Madrasa Aminia and authored books such as Fear of Hell and Key to the Garden of Bliss.
