Polskie Koleje Państwowe S.A. is the dominant railway operator in Poland. The company was founded when the former Polskie Koleje Państwowe state-owned enterprise was divided into several units based on the need for separation between infrastructure management and transport operations. PKP S.A. is the dominant company in PKP Group collective that resulted from the split, and maintains in 100% share control, being fully responsible for the assets of all of the other PKP Group component companies. The group's organisations are dependent upon PKP S.A., but proposals for privatisation have been made.

High-speed rail service commenced in Poland on 14 December 2014, with the introduction of 20 non-tilting Pendolino trainsets operating on 4 designated lines radiating out from Warsaw. Polish State Railways started passenger service trains PKP Pendolino operating a speed 200 km/h on 80 km line Olszamowice-Zawiercie. From December 2017 there are two 200 km/h sections, 136 km long in total. Polish state railways PKP launched the high-speed service under the Express Intercity Premium (EIP) brand name.
The Central Rail Line, which was completed on 23 December 1977, could have been the first high speed railway line in Europe. Designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h, the line goes from the city of Zawiercie in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie region of southern Poland, to Grodzisk Mazowiecki in the suburbs of Warsaw. Its length is 224 kilometers, and in the Polish rail system it is officially known as Rail Line Number 4. The line was originally built for rail freight transport, but it now carries InterCity and EuroCity long-distance passenger services, mostly from Wrocław and Opole, Częstochowa, Katowice, Kraków to Warsaw.

Kraków Mydlniki is a railway station in the Bronowice district of Kraków, Poland, located in the neighbourhood of Mydlniki, northwest of the city centre. The station, with its historic building, lies within the Tenczynek Landscape Park protected area with numerous summer visitors, because the Park is also the location of a medieval Tenczyn Castle built as a seat of the powerful Tęczyński family. It fell into ruin during the Deluge in mid-17th century, after being pillaged and burned by Swedish-Brandenburgian forces looking for the Polish Crown Jewels and the rumored treasures of the Tęczyński family. Within the Landscape Park are five nature reserves.

The station opened in 1846 and is located on the Łódź-Forst railway, Miłkowice–Jasień railway, Żary–Zielona Góra railway and Żary–Legnica railway. In 2003, the station underwent major renovation works, together with the modernisation of the Wrocław-Opole railway line. The station has high passenger flow for passengers heading to and from Nysa and Wrocław.
