The Tamilnad Socialist Labour Party was a political party in Madras State of India, active between 1959 and 1962. The party was led by S.C.C. Anthony Pillai, a prominent labour leader and member of the Second Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Parliament of India). The party contested the 1962 elections unsuccessfully, and would soon thereafter merge into the Tamil National Party.

Split in the Socialist Party

The party emerged from a split in the Socialist Party of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. S.C.C. Anthony Pillai (who was one of the Socialist Party candidates elected to the Lok Sabha in the 1957 Indian general election) and his grouping in Madras State broke away from the Socialist Party in early 1959, arguing that the Socialist Party under Lohia was characterized by 'dictatorial tendencies'. [1] The S.C.C. Anthony Pillai group formed the Tamilnad Socialist Labour Party in April 1959.. [1] [2] [3] Among the leaders that sided with the Tamilnad Socialist Labour Party was S. Pakkirisamy Pillai, general secretary of the Madras Port Trust Employees Union and member of the Madras State Legislative Assembly representing the Perambur constituency. [4] The party published the journal Manithakulam ('Mankind'). [5]

1962 elections

The party contested the 1962 Lok Sabha election and the 1962 Madras State Legislative Assembly election. It fielded one candidate in the Lok Sabha election, S.C.C. Anthony Pillai contesting the Madras North Lok Sabha constituency. [6] He finished in third place with 80,227 votes (24.74% of the votes in the constituency). All in all the party obtained 43,186 votes in the legislative assembly election, getting 9.81% of the votes in the constituencies contested. [7]

Merger with the Tamil National Party

The Tamilnad Socialist Labour Party merged with the Tamil National Party of E.V.K. Sampath on April 8, 1962. [2] E.V.K. Sampath and S.C.C. Anthony Pillai announced the merger together, the unified party retained the name Tamil National Party. [2] In the process of the merger the Tamilnad Socialist Labour Party accepted the position of the Tamil National Party to demand Tamil national autonomy within an Indian federation with the right to secede. Paramarthalinga Thanulinga Nadar, also known simply as Thanulingam, was an Indian politician, Tamil Nadu Ellai Poratta Thyagi, and a staunch member of the now defunct Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress and would later emerge as a right-wing activist in the State. The fifth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held in March 1971. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was re-elected, after its first victory under the leadership of C N Annadurai in 1967. This was the first time M. Karunanidhi, contested as the leader of DMK party won the election, since he assumed Chief Ministership for the first time, after the death of C N Annadurai. Karunanidhi had emerged successfully in the leadership crisis (having supported by M. G. Ramachandran, against Nedunchezhiyan, which ensued after the death of C. N. Annadurai. The main opposition party in the election was Indian National Congress led by K. Kamaraj, whereas the Indian National Congress faction aligned with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. This was the first instance in which the National ruling party which was bent into a coalition where the state party would take all seats for state legislature in exchange for half seats for lok sabha in the state.

The third legislative assembly election to the Madras state was held on 21 February 1962. The Indian National Congress party, led by K. Kamaraj, won the election. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam made significant in-roads in the election and emerged as the second party for the first time by winning 50 seats. 1962 Election remains the most recent election in which Indian National Congress to form a majority Government in the State as its support was heavily declined due to rise of Dravidian political parties.

The Socialist Party of India, also known as Socialist Party (Lohia Group), the Lohia Socialists or by its Hindi language abbreviation SOPA (सोपा), was a political party in India 1955-1964. The party emerged out of a split in the Praja Socialist Party in 1955. The party was led by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, who had served as general secretary of the Praja Socialist Party. The Socialist Party had representation in the parliament of India as well in several state legislative assemblies. The strength of the party was concentrated in the Hindi belt, in particular after having suffered splits in Andhra Pradesh and Madras State 1958-1959. The Socialist Party would raise caste-related demands, breaking with socialist orthodoxy which had focused mainly on economic class issues. In 1964 a reunification with the remnants of the Praja Socialist Party took place, resulting in the formation of the Samyukta Socialist Party.
