Tarascon (foaled 12 February 1995) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1997 she was one of the leading fillies of her generation in Ireland winning two of her four races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following season she became rather temperamental and ran poorly in the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks Stakes, but produced her best form to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She retired after winning three of her nine races and had some success as a broodmare.

Background

Tarascon was a bay mare bred in Ireland by Barronstown Stud, Ron Con Ltd and Mrs T Stack. She was one of the best horses sired by Tirol, an Irish-bred, British-trained stallion who won the 2000 Guineas and the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 1990. [2] Her dam Breyani, won three minor races and also produced Mister Monet, whose wins included the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano and the Rose of Lancaster Stakes. [3] Throughout her racing career, Tarascon was owned by Jane Rowlinson and trained at Golden, County Tipperary by Tommy Stack.

Racing career

1997: two-year-old season

As a two-year-old, Tarascon was ridden in all of her races by Pat Smullen. She made her racecourse debut in a six furlong maiden race at the Curragh on 13 July when she finished third of the eight runners, making good progress in the closing stages. Thirteen days later she reappeared in a race over seven furlongs at the same course and started 4/1 second favourite in a field of eight. She moved up on the outside with a quarter of a mile left to run and won by half a length from the favourite Saratoga Springs a colt trained by Aidan O'Brien. [4] Tarascon was then moved up sharply in class for the Group One Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse in which she was again matched against colts. She tracked the leaders but was unable to make any significant progress in the closing stages and finished fifth behind the British-trained colt Princely Heir. On 7 September, the filly returned to competing against her own sex in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Smullen ettled the filly behind the leaders before moving up into second place with a quarter of a mile left to run. In the final strides she overtook the leader Heed My Warning and won by a head at odds of 7/1, with the future Epsom Oaks winner Shahtoush in third. [5] Tarascon did not race again in 1997, but the value of her form was boosted when Saratoga Springs won the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster Racecourse in October.

1998: three-year-old season

Tarascon's first appearance of her second season was the classic 1000 Guineas over the Rowley mile course at Newmarket Racecourse on 3 May. Her chances were somewhat compromised as she became frightened when being unloaded from the plane to England at Stansted Airport and sustained a minor leg injury. [6] The filly became agitated in the starting stalls at Newmarket and ran very poorly, finishing a distant last of the sixteen runners behind Cape Verdi. After this race Jamie Spencer, then a seventeen-year-old apprentice jockey, replaced Smullen as the filly's regular jockey. Three weeks after her defeat at Newmarket, Tarascon started at odds of 12/1 for the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh where she again gave trouble at the start, with four stalls handlers required to force her into the stalls. [6] Spencer settled the filly behind the leaders before switching to the outside with two and a half furlongs left to run. She was still in fifth place entering the final furlong but stayed on strongly in the closing stages to take the lead in the final strides and win by a neck from Kitza, with the Saeed bin Suroor-trained favourite La Nuite Rose two lengths back in third. [7] After the race, Stack revealed that he had deliberately downplayed the significance of the event to the young jockey, telling him that it was "just an ordinary race and if she runs bad, there is no panic, there isn't any pressure". [6]

Tarascon was sent back to England and moved up in distance to contest the Epsom Oaks over one and a half miles on 5 June. She was held up by Spencer in the early stages but began to struggle with two furlong to run and weakened in the closing stages to finish sixth of the eight runners, fourteen lengths behind the winner Shahtoush. [8] Tarascon was brought back to a mile for the Group One Sussex Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse on 29 July, but, racing against colts and older horses, she made no impression and finished seventh of the ten runners behind Among Men. The filly's final start was the Irish Champion Stakes over ten furlongs at Leopardstown on 12 September. She made little impact in a strong field, finishing fifth behind Swain, Alborada, Xaar and One So Wonderful. [9]

Tarascon was retired from racing to become a broodmare. She has produced at least eight foals and five winners:

Shahtoush Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Shahtoush was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning The Oaks in 1998. In a racing career which lasted from August 1997 to September 1998 the filly ran eleven times and won three races. Shahtoush won only one minor race as a two-year-old, but showed top-class form when she finished third in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes. In 1998 she finished second in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse and then returned to England to win the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She was beaten in her two remaining races, finishing unplaced in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Irish Champion Stakes.

Park Appeal was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading two-year-old fillies of 1984 when she was undefeated in four races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland and the Cheveley Park Stakes in Britain. Her later career was disappointing and she was retired with a record of five wins in eight races between August 1984 and August 1986. Having been bought by Sheikh Mohammed at the end of her two-year-old season, she later became a highly successful broodmare for the Darley Stud.

Saoirse Abu was an American-bred Irish-trained thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading European two-year-old fillies of her generation, winning three of her eight races including two of Ireland's most important races for juveniles: the Phoenix Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She raced three times as a three-year-old in 2008, producing her best effort when a close third in the 1000 Guineas. She was sold for over £2 million at the end of her racing career and became a broodmare in the ownership of Sheikh Mohammed.

Sookera was an American-bred Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Racing only as a two-year-old in 1977, she won three times and finished second twice, from five races. After winning on her debut and finishing second on her next appearance, she recorded her first major success when defeating male opponents in the Chesham Stakes. She returned from a late summer break and finished second in the Moyglare Stud Stakes before winning the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes. Sookera never ran again but became a very successful broodmare. She produced several winners including So Factual and is the female-line ancestor of numerous major winners including Dansili, Leroidesanimaux, Banks Hill and Intercontinental.

Desirable was a British thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1983 she won on her debut and then took the Princess Margaret Stakes on her second appearance. After finishing second in the Lowther Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes she recorded her biggest victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she failed to win but was placed in the 1000 Guineas and the Nassau Stakes as well as finishing fourth in the Coronation Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a very successful broodmare, producing the 1000 Guineas winner Shadayid and several other good winners.

Listen is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 2007 she won the Listed Saoire Stakes on her debut, finished second in both the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. Her subsequent racing career was compromised by injury and she made little impact in two races as a three-year-old. She has had some success as a broodmare in Japan.

Trusted Partner was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1987 when she won both of her races including the C L Weld Park Stakes and won the Irish 1000 Guineas on her three-year-old debut. She was beaten in her three remaining European starts and had no success when sent to race in America in 1989. After her retirement from racing she became a very successful broodmare.

Saoire is a Welsh-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2005. After being sold cheaply as a foal she was eventually sent into training with Frances Crowley in Ireland. In four races as a two-year-old in 2004 she showed very promising form, winning a maiden race and finishing placed in both the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following spring she finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest victory in the Irish equivalent three weeks later. Her victory made her the first Irish Classic Race winner to be trained by a woman. She was well beaten in three subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year.

Sweet Emma was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1982 she won two minor races in spring and then recorded her most important success with a victory in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. She went on to finish fourth in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and ended the year as the best Irish-trained juvenile filly of her generation. After being transferred to race in England she failed to win at three but did finish third in the Leisure Stakes and fourth in the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare in Europe and Japan.

Bianca Nera British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Bianca Nera was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 1996 when she won the first three of her four races including the Lowther Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was retired from racing after two disappointing runs in the spring of 1997. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners including the dam of the multiple Group 1 winner Postponed.

Miss Beatrix is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2006 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland when she won three of eight races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Million as well as finishing third in the Phoenix Stakes. She ran unplaced in the 1000 Guineas in the following spring and was retired from racing later that year.

Sequoyah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile in 2000 she showed high-class form, winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and being placed in both the Railway Stakes and the Debutante Stakes. In the following year she failed to win but ran well against top quality competition to finish fourth in the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Irish Oaks. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare, most notably producing Henrythenavigator.

Necklace is a British, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She had her greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when she won two of her four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year failed to win but did finish third in the Beverly D. Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Oaks before being retired from racing with a record of two wins from nine starts in four different counties. She had very little success as a broodmare, producing only one minor winner.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Mail The Desert was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As two-year-old in 2002 she ran seven times in just over three months, winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland as well as finishing second in the Prestige Stakes. In the following year she failed to win in three starts but was placed third in the Coronation Stakes. As a broodmare she produced five winners before dying in 2015 at the age of fifteen.

Preseli is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Ireland in 1999 when she was undefeated in three races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following spring she took her winning streak to four when she won the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial but was beaten in her next three races that year, producing her best subsequent effort when narrowly beaten in the Pretty Polly Stakes. In 2001 she raced in North America, but failed to reproduce her European form. As a broodmare she has produced several minor winners.
