Tennis Premier League is an Indian tennis league. [3] It was founded by Kunal Thakkur and Mrunal Jain. [4] The first season of the league was launched in October 2018. [5]

Tennis Premier League has a selection of marquee national and international players, which get selected via auction. [6] [7]

Notable names

Former tennis player Leander Paes is the owner of a team. [8] Sania Mirza, an iconic and trailblazing name of Indian tennis, is the brand ambassador of a team. Bollywood actors Arjun Kapoor and Sonu Sood are also brand ambassadors of two TPL teams. [9]

To add to the list, Bollywood actresses Rakul Preet Singh, Sonali Bendre, and Taapsee Pannu are proud owners of three TPL teams.

During season 3 which was hosted in 2021, Goran Ivanišević, who is Novak Djokovic's coach, was part of TPL. Matthew Ebden, the winner of Wimbledon Championship 2022 men's doubles was a part of the league. [10]

Format

The format of Tennis Premier League sees eight teams being divided into two groups. Each match has four games, men’s and women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles: each worth 20 points. [11]

Teams

There are total 8 teams in Tennis Premier League, with 24 players battling out for the final title. Each team has its own owner with a mentor, coach, a physio and nutritionist. [12]

Vishnu Vardhan, also known as J. Vishnuvardhan, is an Indian professional tennis player. He won bronze medal in men's doubles at 2010 Asian games in Guangzhou, China. He paired-up with and Sania Mirza for mixed doubles and won silver medal at the same event. He was featured as ITF player of April 2011. He won the national singles title for the fourth time by winning the Men's final of Fenesta Open tennis Championship on 8 October 2016

Tennis enjoys a considerable following in India. Although it is limited to urban areas but still it is counted among the most popular national sports. India has produced a number of tennis players, who have achieved international recognition and made their presence in some of the top tennis tournaments and grand slams. All India Tennis Association established in 1920, is the governing body of tennis in India and is a member of the Asian Tennis Federation. India Davis Cup team is the most successful team of Asia in Davis Cup, who has finished as runners-up 3 times.

The 2012 Aircel Chennai Open was a 2012 ATP World Tour tennis tournament, played on outdoor hard courts. It was the 17th edition of the only ATP tournament taking place in India and took place at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai, India. It was held from 2 to 8 January 2012. Stanislas Wawrinka was the defending singles champion coming into the tournament but was knocked out in the quarterfinals. Former champion Marin Čilić was originally in the field as the 4th seed before pulling out with a patellar tendon injury. Finally, fourth seed Milos Raonic from Canada defeated world no. 9 and top seeded Serb Janko Tipsarević to win only his second ATP title. Raonic became the first player since Roger Federer in 2008 to win an ATP title without losing a serve. The doubles title went to the Indo-Serb pair of Leander Paes and Janko Tipsarević after they defeated the Israeli pair of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.

Leander Adrian Paes is an Indian former professional tennis player and the 1st Asian man to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He is regarded as one of the greatest doubles tennis players of all-time and holds the record for the most doubles wins in the Davis Cup. Paes won eight men's doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. He holds a career Grand Slam in men's doubles and mixed doubles making him one of only three men in the Open era to achieve this distinction and won the rare men's/mixed double at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships. Paes, together with Mahesh Bhupathi, were the first pair in Open era history to reach the men's doubles finals of all 4 Grand Slams in the same calendar year (1999).

Ultimate Table Tennis is a professional level table tennis league in India. Launched in 2017, it consists of 8 teams. The league is held by Table Tennis Federation of India. The 2024 champions are Goa Challengers who defeated Dabang Delhi TTC in the finals.

Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah won their second consecutive Grand Slam men's doubles title, defeating Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the final, 6–4, 7–5 to win the men's doubles tennis title at the 2019 US Open. Cabal and Farah retained the ATP no. 1 doubles ranking. Mike Bryan, Łukasz Kubot and Nicolas Mahut were also in contention for the top ranking at the start of the tournament.
