Teona (foaled 13 March 2018) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 2020 when she won the second of her two races by nine lengths. In the following spring she ran disappointingly in the Musidora Stakes and the Epsom Oaks but developed into a top-class middle distance performer, winning the August Stakes and the Prix Vermeille.

Background

Teona is a bay filly with a white stripe bred in Ireland by Rabbah Bloodstock. As a yearling in October 2019 she was consigned to the Tattersalls sales and was bought for 280,000 guineas by Hugo Merry Bloodstock. [2] She entered the ownership of Ali Saeed, and was sent into training with Roger Varian at Newmarket, Suffolk.

She was from the eighth crop of foals sired by Sea the Stars who won the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2009. His other major winners have included Baaeed, Harzand, Taghrooda, Stradivarius, Sea of Class and Sea The Moon. [3] Teona's dam Ambivalent was a top-class racemare whose wins included the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Middleton Stakes. [4] She was a half-sister to the dam of the Prix de l'Abbaye winner Total Gallery and, as a descendant of the broodmare Meinhart, she was also distantly related to the Grand National winner Lord Gyllene. Racing career

2020: two-year-old season

Teona made her track debut in a one-mile maiden race on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Newcastle Racecourse on 30 October when she started 2/1 favourite and finished second, beaten a length by the winner Sea Empress. On 19 November at the same track she went off the 1/3 favourite for a maiden over ten furlongs and recorded her first success as she took the lead entering the last quarter mile and drew away to win "easily" by nine lengths from the colt Kondo Isami. 2021: three-year-old season

For her first appearance as a three-year-old, Teona was stepped up in class to contest the Group 3 Musidora Stakes (a major trial for the Epsom Oaks) over 10+1⁄2 furlongs at York Racecourse on 12 May when she was ridden by Andrea Atzeni and started the 15/8 second choice in the betting. After becoming agitated in the starting stalls she fought her jockey's attempts to restrain her and made little impression in the closing stages, coming home third behind Snowfall and the favourite Noon Star. [7] In the Oaks on 4 June the filly started at odds of 12/1 but never looked likely to win and finished tenth behind Snowfall, beaten more than twenty-seven lengths by the winner. [8]

After a break of fourteen weeks, Teona returned to the track on 28 August, when she was matched against colts and older horses in the Listed August Stakes over 11+1⁄2 furlongs at Windsor Racecourse. She started the 3/1 joint-favourite alongside the four-year-old filly Domino Darling in an eight-runner field which also included the Canadian International Stakes winner Desert Encounter. Ridden by Ray Dawson Teona tracked the leaders before taking the lead two furlongs from the finish and kept on well to win by 3+1⁄4 lengths from Desert Encounter. [9] After the race Roger Varian said "We had big hopes of her in the spring and it didn’t go her way in the Oaks trial or the Oaks, so we’ve given her time. Hopefully this is just the start for her now – it’s nice to get a Listed win and hopefully she can build on that now." [10]

Two weeks after her win at Windsor, Teona returned to Group 1 class when she was sent to France to contest the Prix Vermeille over 2400 metres at Longchamp Racecourse and started a 17.9/1 outsider in a seven-runner field. Snowfall started the 1/5 favourite while the other contenders included Incarville, Joan of Arc and Philomene (Prix Penelope). Ridden by Olivier Peslier, Teona tracked the front-running La Joconde before gaining the advantage 200 metres from the finish and stayed on well to win beat Snowfall by 1+1⁄2 lengths. [11] Varian commented "I think she's very good, I don't think it's a fluke result. Whether Snowfall ran up to her very best, you could argue that she didn't. But the Oaks was not our race, she couldn't handle the conditions and ours is a very good filly. I've always said that and that's why it's so satisfying that it's come through today." [12]

Teona was expected to run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe but was withdrawn on account of the soft ground. [13]

Punctilous is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In the following year she developed into a top-class middle distance performer, winning the Musidora Stakes and the Ribblesdale Stakes as well as finishing second in the Irish Oaks and the E. P. Taylor Stakes, third in The Oaks and fourth in the Yorkshire Oaks. In 2005 she made little impact in her first two starts but then won the Chalice Stakes before recording her biggest victory in the Yorkshire Oaks. She was retired from racing at the end of the year to become a broodmare.

Pure Grain was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In 1994 she won two of her five races including the Prestige Stakes as well as finishing third in the Princess Margaret Stakes and fourth when favourite for the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she emerged as one of the best middle distance fillies of her generation in Europe with wins in the Musidora Stakes, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. She also finished third in The Oaks and fifth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a dam of winners.

Shamshir was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In racing career which lasted from August 1990 until October 1991 she won two of her eleven races. As a two-year-old in 1990 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Britain, winning a maiden race and being narrowly beaten in the May Hill Stakes before recording her biggest win in the Group One Fillies' Mile. She failed to win as a three-year-old but finished second in The Oaks and the Nassau Stakes and third in the Yorkshire Oaks. She was retired at the end of the year to become a broodmare.

Zahrat Dubai is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After running unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she wintered in Dubai and returned to Britain to record an impressive victory in the Musidora Stakes. She finished third when favourite for The Oaks but then defeated a strong field in the Nassau Stakes. She failed to reproduce her best form in two subsequent races and was retired at the end of the year. Zahrat Dubai became a broodmare and produced two winners from eleven foals.

Moonstone is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. Unraced as a two-year-old, her six-race track career lasted from April to October 2008. After finishing second in a maiden race on her debut she ran fourth in the Musidora Stakes and second in The Oaks before recording her first and only victory in the Irish Oaks. She finished unplaced in two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. As a broodmare she has produced several good winners including US Army Ranger.

Shiva was a Japanese-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which was delayed and repeatedly interrupted by training problems she won four of her ten races between May 1998 and October 2000. Unraced as a two-year-old, she won her only start at three and emerged as a top-class middle distance performer in the spring of 1999 with wins in the Earl of Sefton Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup and went on to finish second in the Champion Stakes in autumn. As a five-year-old she recorded an emphatic win in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and then finished third in a strongly contested edition of the Eclipse Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a dam of winners.

Madame Chiang was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was a strong stayer who was especially well-suited by soft or heavy ground. After winning her only race as a juvenile in 2013 she won the Musidora Stakes on her three-year-old debut but ran poorly in the Epsom Oaks. he returned in autumn and recorded her biggest success in the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes. She failed to win or place in four races in 2015.

Sil Sila was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was not highly regarded as a two-year-old in 1995 but won both of her races at long odds including the Listed Radley Stakes. In the following spring she was placed in both the Fred Darling Stakes and the Musidora Stakes before recording a 30/1 upset victory in the Prix de Diane. She was unplaced on her only subsequent start and retired from racing at the end of the year. She had no success as a broodmare.

All At Sea was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from October 1991 until September 1992 she recorded five wins and three second places from nine starts. After easily winning her only race as a juvenile she won her first three starts in the following spring including the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Musidora Stakes. She went on to run second in the Epsom Oaks, Nassau Stakes and International Stakes before recording her biggest success in the Prix du Moulin. She was retired from racing after finishing fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners but no top-class performers.

Emily Upjohn is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After winning her only race as a two-year-old she emerged as a top-class performer in the following season, winning the Musidora Stakes and looking an unlucky loser in the Epsom Oaks before taking the Group 1 British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes. On her first run as a four-year-old she won the Coronation Cup.
