Andalusia is the southernmost autonomous community in Peninsular Spain. It is the most populous and the second largest autonomous community in the country. The Andalusian autonomous community is officially recognised as a "historical nationality". Caliph Abd al-Rahman III founded the city in 955. The city grew wealthy during the Islamic era, reaching its greatest splendor in the 11th century, with an active port that traded silk, oil and raisins. It suffered many sieges and fell under Christian domination in 1489. In 1522, Almería was devastated by an earthquake and rebuilding and recovery did not start until the 1800s. During the Spanish Civil War, the city was shelled by the German navy, and fell to Franco in 1939. It has since rebuilt its economy around vegetable production, with 400 km2 of greenhouses, supplying much of Europe.
