Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents purportedly unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown people rather than professional actors. Reality television emerged as a distinct genre in the early 1990s with shows such as The Real World, then achieved prominence in the early 2000s with the success of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother, all of which became global franchises. Reality television shows tend to be interspersed with "confessionals", short interview segments in which cast members reflect on or provide context for the events being depicted on-screen; this is most commonly seen in American reality television. Competition-based reality shows typically feature gradual elimination of participants, either by a panel of judges, by the viewership of the show, or by the contestants themselves.
Queer Eye is an American reality television series that premiered on the cable television network Bravo in July 2003. Originally Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the title was later shortened to broaden the overall scope. The series was created by executive producers David Collins and Michael Williams along with David Metzler through their company, Scout Productions.
Bravo is an American basic cable television network, launched on December 8, 1980. It is owned by the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming division of Comcast's NBCUniversal through NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. The channel originally focused on programming related to fine arts and film. It currently mainly focuses on lifestyle reality television series targeted at 25-to-54-year-old women as well as the gay community.
Boy Meets Boy is an American reality television show in which a gay man meets and chooses a mate from a group of 15 potential male suitors. The show featured the twist that the "leading man" did not know that the mix of suitors included both gay and heterosexual men.
Antiques Roadshow is a British television programme broadcast by the BBC in which antiques appraisers travel to various regions of the United Kingdom to appraise antiques brought in by local people. It has been running since 1979, based on a 1977 documentary programme. The programme has spawned versions in other countries with the same TV format, including Canada and the United States. As of 2021, it is in its 44th series and has been presented by Fiona Bruce since 2008.
Lisa Deanna Rinna is an American actress, author and television personality. As an actress, she is best known for her roles as Billie Reed on the NBC daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Fox's television drama Melrose Place. Since 2014, Rinna has been a main cast member on Bravo's hit reality television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Other television credits include being a contestant on NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice and ABC's Dancing with the Stars, as well as guest-starring roles on series such as Entourage, The Middle, Veronica Mars, Community, and 8 Simple Rules. Rinna made her Broadway debut in Chicago as Roxie Hart in June 2007.
Most Haunted is a British paranormal reality television series. Following complaints, the broadcast regulator Ofcom ruled that it was an entertainment show, not a legitimate investigation into the paranormal, and "should not be taken seriously".
Ghost Whisperer is an American supernatural television series, which ran on CBS from September 23, 2005, to May 21, 2010.
Derek Francis Johnson, known professionally as Derek Acorah, was a British spiritual medium. He was best known for his television work on Most Haunted, broadcast on Living TV (2002–2010). His career as a medium was punctuated by allegations of fakery and he also attracted controversy over a number of seances during which he reportedly made contact with high-profile figures.
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List is an American reality television series that aired on Bravo from August 3, 2005 to August 3, 2010. The series follows the struggle of self-proclaimed "D-list" celebrity Kathy Griffin to climb the Hollywood ladder. This often includes scheming for publicity with staffers Jessica, Tiffany, and Tom. Her relationships with her parents and her now ex-husband were also featured.
Derek Acorah's Ghost Towns is a paranormal reality television series which features noted Medium Derek Acorah as he visits towns in the UK to investigate hauntings. The team would travel in the "Ghost Town Van" and would allow townsfolk to tell the team about their encounters with hauntings in their home town. During the investigation, Derek would visit a random house and give the owner a psychic reading this was "Doorstep Divination." The show aired from 7 November 2005 until 28 November 2006.
The Real Housewives is an international reality television franchise that consists of 11 series in the United States and 21 international series. Most of the series document the lives of a group of affluent women residing in a certain city. The American series have mostly been broadcast on the Bravo network. The franchise began with The Real Housewives of Orange County, which premiered on March 21, 2006. That show was inspired by several soap operas, most notably Desperate Housewives; the franchise has sometimes been referred to as a "docu-soap". Of the international series, the longest-running is The Real Housewives of Cheshire, which has aired 14 seasons so far.
The Rachel Zoe Project is an American reality documentary series starring celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe. The series premiered on September 9, 2008 on the Bravo television network. The show also airs on Arena in Australia, Really in the United Kingdom, TV3 in Norway, Cosmopolitan TV in Canada, SIC Mulher in Portugal, Divinity channel in Spain, and Sub in Finland.
Gay Weddings is a 2002 American reality television series that aired on Bravo. The series, created by openly gay producers Kirk Marcolina and Douglas Ross, followed two lesbian and two gay couples as they prepared for their wedding ceremonies. Each episode combined interview footage of the individual couples and their families and friends with footage of the various couples going through their wedding planning activities along with video diaries from the couples themselves.
American Pickers is an American reality television series that premiered on January 18, 2010 on History, produced by A&E Television Networks in collaboration with Cineflix Media.
Antiques Roadshow is an American television program broadcast on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Public television stations. The program features local antiques owners who bring in items to be appraised by experts. Provenance, history, and value of the items are discussed. Based on the original British Antiques Roadshow, which premiered in 1979, the American version first aired in 1997. When taping locations are decided, they are announced on the program's website raising the profile of various small to mid-size cities, such as Billings, Montana; Biloxi, Mississippi; Bismarck, North Dakota; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Hot Springs, Arkansas; and Rapid City, South Dakota. Antiques Roadshow has been nominated 16 times for a Primetime Emmy.
Brandi Lynn Glanville is an American television personality, author, fashion designer, and former model. She is best known for appearing on the reality television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (2011–2016) and series two of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip (2021). She also hosts a podcast called Brandi Glanville Unfiltered and has appeared on television shows Celebrity Apprentice, both the British and American version of Celebrity Big Brother, Famously Single, and My Kitchen Rules. Glanville has released two books, Drinking and Tweeting: And Other Brandi Blunders (2013) and Drinking and Dating (2014), which became New York Times Best Sellers.
Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis is an American reality television series that debuted March 14, 2012, on Bravo. It is a spin-off from Lewis' other Bravo show Flipping Out, and features both Jenni Pulos and Zoila Chavez.
Below Deck is an American reality television series on Bravo that debuted on July 1, 2013, developed by Mark Cronin, Rebecca Taylor Henning, and Doug Henning. Announced in April 2012, Below Deck chronicles the lives of the crew members who work and reside aboard a superyacht during charter season. It shows the crew as they deal with their personal issues in order to make their professional careers work.
