The Canadian International Learning Foundation(CanILF) is an Ottawa, Ontario, Canada-based, volunteer-run registered charity which provides and promotes professional education in areas of the world affected by war, illness and poverty (at-risk areas). [1]
CanILF seeks to reach its goals through the following activities:
The Afghan-Canadian Community Center (ACCC), [2] is a safe and secure place for women to receive an education. [3] The ACCC provides courses in Business Management, IT, English and Health Care to approximately 1,500 women and men. Students at the ACCC also receive recognized Canadian online education via the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and the Canada e-School. The ACCC’s programs provide the skills its students need to obtain employment at a cost-per-student from $10 to $25 per month. [4] Once employed, students support themselves and their families (on average, 6 family members per student), give back to their communities and participate in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Because of ACCC training, more than 500 students have obtained employment or promotions.
The school presently receives more than half of its operating expenses through the Kandahar Capacity Project, which is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency’s Kandahar Local Initiatives Program. [5]
CanILF also operates a project to benefit the Community Empowerment Program at St. Paul’s Kabira Adult Attention and School of Orphans (KAASO) [6] via its Uganda Literacy and Education Program. [7] The Community Empowerment Program provides women and men in the community with education in basic literacy, business, agriculture and traditional artisanry.
The Yemen Micro-Project (YMP) is The Canadian International Learning Foundation’s first project in the Middle East. [8] The YMP’s goal is to help to connect local partners in Yemen with educational and information technology expertise in Canada through collaborative initiatives. Canada Bridges, [9] an organization that has extensive experience in offering business education in Yemen, has agreed to help CanILF choose suitable partners and establish relationships with the Government of Yemen.
Members of the Foundation in Ottawa meet in The Glebe on a weekly basis. [10]
A group of approximately 30 students at the Afghan-Canadian Community Center (ACCC) are currently studying Business Management via online courses taught online by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
Provided extensive financial and administrative support to the Canadian International Learning Foundation and the two organizations maintain a close partnership to promote and sustain women’s education in Afghanistan.
EdGen host the profiles of students of the Afghan School Project, thereby encouraging donors from across the globe to help students receive life-changing education.
Vital English donated 100 months of blended e-learning courses to CanILF for the benefit of the partner schools in Afghanistan and Yemen.

A community college is a type of undergraduate higher education institution, generally leading to an associate degree, certificate, or diploma. The term can have different meanings in different countries: many community colleges have an open enrollment policy for students who have graduated from high school, also known as senior secondary school or upper secondary school. The term usually refers to a higher educational institution that provides workforce education and college transfer academic programs. Some institutions maintain athletic teams and dormitories similar to their university counterparts.
Distance education, also known as distance learning, is the education of students who may not always be physically present at school, or where the learner and the teacher are separated in both time and distance. Traditionally, this usually involved correspondence courses wherein the student corresponded with the school via mail. Distance education is a technology-mediated modality and has evolved with the evolution of technologies such as video conferencing, TV, and the Internet. Today, it usually involves online education and the learning is usually mediated by some form of technology. A distance learning program can either be completely a remote learning, or a combination of both online learning and traditional offline classroom instruction. Other modalities include distance learning with complementary virtual environment or teaching in virtual environment (e-learning).

Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI) - an intensive annual "summer school for Indigenous language activists, speakers, linguists, and teachers" - hosted at the University of Alberta, Edmonton - is a "multicultural, cross-linguistic, interdisciplinary, inter-regional, inter-generational" initiative. CILLDI was established in 1999 with one Cree language course offered by Cree speaker Donna Paskemin. By 2016 over 600 CILLDI students representing nearly 30 Canadian Indigenous languages had participated in the program and it had become the "most national of similar language revitalization programs in Canada aimed at the promotion of First Peoples languages." CILLDI - a joint venture between the University of Alberta and the University of Saskatchewan - responds to "different sociolinguistic situations in language communities under threat" and includes three faculties at the University of Alberta in Edmonton - Arts, Education, and Native Studies. CILLDI provides practical training to students which is "directly implemented back in the community." Initiatives like CILLDI were formed against the backdrop of a projection of a catastrophic and rapid decline of languages in the twenty-first century.
Open educational resources in Canada are the various initiatives related to open education, open educational resources (OER), open pedagogies (OEP), open educational practices (OEP), and open scholarship that are established nationally and provincially across Canadian K-12 and higher education sectors, and where Canadian based inititatives extend to international collaborations.
Contact North is a distance education network in the Canadian province of Ontario, with 112 online learning centres throughout the province. Based principally in Sudbury and Thunder Bay, the network partners with Ontario's 24 public colleges, 22 public universities and 250 public literacy and essential skills and training providers to help Ontarians in over 600 communities across the province participate in education and training opportunities without leaving their own community.
