The Healer is the fifth studio album by the American/Canadian metal band Sumac. The album was released on June 21, 2024, through Thrill Jockey. [2]
In a press release for the album, the band stated the four songs on The Healer, "embody the depth of the human experience, seeking to mirror humanity's endurance of 'mortal and spiritual challenges,' that grant greater capacity for understanding, empathy, and love on the other side." [2] Sumac sees The Healer as the conclusion of an unofficial trilogy that started with Love in Shadow (2018) and continued with May You Be Held (2020). [3]
Sumac promoted The Healer with an online stream of "Yellow Dawn" coinciding with the album's announcement in April 2024. [2] In May 2024, director Damien Neva in collaboration with Roadburn Festival released a documentary titled Six Hours 42 Minutes with Sumac. [4]
To support The Healer, Sumac will tour North America in June and July 2024 starting with a set at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. [2]
Sumac will follow up The Healer with a two-song remix EP titled The Keeper's Tongue in July 2024. The EP includes a remix of "World of Light" by Moor Mother, and a remix of "The Stone's Turn" by Raven Chacon.

The Healer was generally well received by music critics. Pitchfork gave the album an 8.4/10.0 rating, and awarded the album the title of "Best New Music". [6] Patric Fallon of Pitchfork praised the album within Sumac's discography, stating: "If Love in Shadow searched ever more deeply for metal's untapped possibilities and May You Be Held confidently wrestled with its roiling unknown, then The Healer swallows its universe whole and reforms it anew. It's an album that uses the rejection of metal's well-trodden forms not as an endpoint but as a catalyst for bringing something else into being." [6] Writing for PopMatters , Seth Troyer drew similar comparisons to the bands catalog, stating: "It feels like the culmination of a sort of trilogy for Sumac that began with 2018's Love In Shadow and continued with the equally stunning May You Be Held in 2020. [...] The results are overwhelming. You won't believe your ears." [7] Writing for AllMusic, Paul Simpson said: "The Healer is an emotionally draining experience, like all of Sumac's other releases, but it reaches transcendence in a unique and powerful way." [5]

The Mountain Goats are an American band formed in Claremont, California, by singer-songwriter John Darnielle. The band is currently based in Durham, North Carolina. For many years, the sole member of the Mountain Goats was Darnielle, despite the plural moniker. Although he remains the core member of the band, he has worked with a variety of collaborators over time, including bassist and vocalist Peter Hughes, drummer Jon Wurster, multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, singer-songwriter Franklin Bruno, bassist and vocalist Rachel Ware, singer-songwriter/producer John Vanderslice, guitarist Kaki King, and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark.
Cult of Luna is a Swedish post-metal band from Umeå founded in 1998. Their style of music is similar to contemporary bands Neurosis and Isis. Cult of Luna was signed to Earache Records in the early 2000s and released five albums, including the commercially successful albums Salvation (2004) and Somewhere Along the Highway (2006). After an extended period of inactivity, Cult of Luna returned with its Indie Recordings debut Vertikal (2013) and companion EP Vertikal II (2013), both drawing inspiration from Fritz Lang's 1927 film, Metropolis. In 2016 the band released their space-themed collaborative album, Mariner, featuring American vocalist Julie Christmas.
Wolves in the Throne Room is an American black metal band formed in 2002 in Olympia, Washington, by brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver. They have released seven full-length albums, two live albums, and two EPs to date. They have stated one of the founding concepts of the band to be channeling the "energies of the Pacific Northwest's landscape" into musical form.
The English industrial metal band Godflesh have released eight studio albums and six extended plays along with a number of singles, compilations and remix and live albums. The group formed in 1982 under the name Fall of Because, but they did not release any music until 1988 when Justin Broadrick and B. C. Green changed the project's name to Godflesh and recorded a self-titled debut EP. That EP, released through the independent label Swordfish, was met with underground success and has since been recognised as one of the first industrial metal releases, if not the first.

Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah, in April 2011. Live at Roadburn 2018 is the first live album by American singer-songwriter Zola Jesus, recorded at the 2018 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands. It was made available to stream and purchase via Bandcamp on May 1, 2020, before expanding to other digital platforms on May 8, 2020. It is scheduled to be released in physical formats–including several variations of limited edition vinyl, as well as compact disc–on June 26, 2020, by Sacred Bones Records.
May You Be Held is the fourth studio album by Canadian-American metal band Sumac. The album was released on October 2, 2020 through Thrill Jockey, pushed back from its original release date of September 18. To promote the album, Sumac released the track "The Iron Chair" for online streaming in July 2020. Sumac asked Thrill Jockey to refrain from posting the album to the music streaming platform Spotify due to what the band referred to as CEO Daniel Ek's "pretty repugnant statements" made earlier in 2020 about artists not performing well on the site.
