AllMusic reviewer Steve Leggett states, "Byard was a jazz player by trade, but his real allegiance was to the piano itself, and few players have brought so much variety out of the instrument and still made it seem like it was all cut from the same elegant and comfortable cloth. John Arthur "Jaki" Byard was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. Mainly a pianist, he also played tenor and alto saxophones, among several other instruments. He was known for his eclectic style, incorporating everything from ragtime and stride to free jazz.
