The Salt Path is a 2024 British biographical drama film directed by Marianne Elliott (in her feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, based on the 2018 memoir of the same name by Raynor Winn. The film stars Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs.

The Salt Path premiered in the Special Presentations section at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2024, and is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom by Black Bear UK on 25 April 2025.

Premise

A married couple receive a bad health diagnosis and are left homeless after legal trouble, so they embark on the 630-mile (1,010 km) South West Coast Path, the longest uninterrupted path in England, from Minehead to Poole around the coast of Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset. [1]

Production

In 2023, Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs were cast in an adaptation of the memoir The Salt Path to be directed by Marianne Elliott in her feature directorial debut. The film is written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz for Number 9 Films. Producers of the movie are Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley, Lloyd Levin, and Beatriz Levin, with BBC Film and Lipsync Productions financing and Black Bear Pictures acquiring UK distribution rights. [2] [3] In July 2023, James Lance and Hermione Norris joined the cast. [4]

Filming

Filming took place in Chepstow in Monmouthshire, and in Aust, Gloucestershire, in June 2023. [5] Filming also happened on East Head at West Wittering.

Principal photography started in Somerset in July 2023; filming locations included Minehead and Hartland Quay in Devon. [6]

Release

The Salt Path had its world premiere as part of the Special Presentations lineup at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2024. [7] [8] The UK release date is 25 April 2025. [9]

The South West Coast Path is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail.
